Walters: Some of Eight Will Stay Tuesday, 13th Jul 2010 16:45
Skipper Jon Walters expects that some of the eight players recently made available for transfer will still be at Portman Road when the season begins. Alex Bruce, Owen Garvan, Alan Quinn, Colin Healy, Jon Stead, Lee Martin, Kevin Lisbie and Pablo Couñago were on a list recently circulated to all Football League sides.
Walters said: “There is a need to create space in the player wage budget. The club has circulated a list of eight players that they are prepared to listen to offers for, but I expect some of them to stay and remain part of the first team squad.
“But here again it is all out of our hands and up to the manager. Our squad is a strong enough one to do well at Championship level whether there is any player movement to come or not.
“And I think we will gain from having a far less hectic build-up to the season than we did last year.”
Walters expects Town to add to their squad nearer to the start of the season: “Ideally it would have been nice to have any newcomers in the building by now so that the gelling and bonding process could have started.
“But the majority of close season business is done late on, and this looks like being the case again.”
Meanwhile, ex-Town keeper Lewis Price is set to join Crystal Palace having been released by Derby County. Price spent last season on loan at Brentford.
Elsewhere, former academy striker Alan Connell has joined Blue Square Premier Grimsby Town, who are managed by ex-Blues frontman Neil Woods, having left Bournemouth at the end of the season. Connell played alongside the likes of Darren Bent and Darren Ambrose at Playford Road.

i think its a bit of a stretch to say that every time garvan was picked last season, he made all the difference to the team. Didnt miss a single game last year and as much as i did see garvan put in a few good performances, overall he was poor. obviously you have to take into consideration his recovering from glandular fever but there are underlying problems with garvan, that would seem to suggest that his future lies away from portman road. I have always been a fan of garvan, he is most definitely our most creative midfielder and quite possibly our most naturally gifted midfeilder. HOWEVER, he really hasnt progressed and made anything of his obvious potential. I am so desperate for him to become awesome but it just doesn't look like he's going to do it. He is no longer a young precocious talent but a player, who given his talent and experience should be a lot further along then he is now. whether or not he has a bad attitude or doesnt get on with keane or is too scared to play how he can, things arent working for him and ultimately it is down to him. garvan always had the potential to be a very good player but it hasnt happened for him so far, maybe a move away will do him good but then again maybe it wont, maybe he does need a manager that understands him better or maybe he does just need a kick up the arse. either way, no player is bigger then the club and im not going to let my sentimental, rose tinted view of garvan cloud my judgement. if he stays then great, we might just see him develop into the player we all know he can, if he goes and we get some decent money for him then we will have funds to bring in some fresh faces. some players just dont have what it takes to make it as a top player, despite their natural ability and garvan would not be the first and certainly will not be the last footballer to not maximise his potential. he's not the bloody messiah (insert python reference here). it would be a shame if he left, no more, no less. on the other hand, what a great bit of business getting mike pejic in is, a fantastic operator in youth development, a real asset to add to our already acclaimed youth system. he really could do wonders for us, he really is top draw.

MarcFowler - being physically fit has very little bearing on how long it takes to get over glandular fever, you are obviously not a doctor. Garvan is our most talented footballer in the squad, there is clearly a problem with Keane's man management of Garvan and unfortunately he can not/will not get the best out of him. I would rather Keane left and Garvan stayed and we get in a manager that appreciates good passing football, unfortunately I think Garvan will go first and we will be left with the same old rubbish we watched last season.

Walters mentions a less hectic start to the season this time around. Is this a criticism of the pre-season build up under roy last year, or is there another explanation?

I think most of them think they will out last the Manager, not a Keane hater like some on here but not a fan of his style of Football.

Let's be honest, RK said he had no friends in football in his book. Its starting to show, no contacts to ring up for a friendly chat as to who might be available. Bye bye Roy, book your late summer hoilday for October.

PS shut up Walters if we got a bid for £5 after your performances last season you'd be gone, you should be on that list with the other 8.

I also agree with Jas0999. Lisbie is 100% going, Bruce and Garvan are potentially out too. For Healy I am not so sure though - his wages may be affordable but for a Championship site and the only clubs that may be interested in him are League 1 (even Hartlepool doesn't want him anymore) clubs so I think we are stuck with him. Quinn also - I can't see a Championship club interested in him... I am happy that Stead could stay but I prefer to have Pablo sold. All these they have only a season more to stay but Martin!? We have him till forever! So he better step up to deserve his wages and 4 years contract.

bluechick - really? walters out? for a fiver? i thought all this nonsense about getting rid of walters had gone away. just to make sure, you want to sell Jon Walters because he's rubbish? what drivel, walters is such an important player for us, fantastic professional who leads the line as captain and always gives his all, whether he or the team is playing well. bluechick you idiot

But ok I will give him credit he must have done very well to attract shaun derry to ipwich :/ and whatever other overpaid waster he was talking to. I hear boro have just signed boyd from rangers, I'm so glad we have a manager that can make signingss like that. Get the clown out

Personally I hope Garvan,Counago,Bruce & Stead all stay long enough 'til Curbishley arrives to sort us out..would be a crying shame if they were let go for next to nothing..they just need a manager & coaching staff who know what they're doing..same goes for the rest of the squad.

I don't think we'll miss anyone the list particularly. Some of them are mediocre, some of them have never been consistent enough to make the most of their ability (Garv, Pabs). I think the real shame is that we have a manager who does so poorly at getting the best out of people. The solution shouldn't always be "change personnel". I don't think there's anyone at the club who you could say played their best football under Keane.

Well said Suffolktractor, Yes I would rather see Keane go then Garven! Glad to see there are some Garven Lovers! I went to every home game last season, everytime Garvern played we looked much better. He was Outstanding agaist QPR only to be dropped the next game. Norris & Leadbitter in the middle simple doesn't work and this was much of the probllem last season, doesn't matter how good your strikers are they need service, Yes Garven hasn't pace but so hasn't Steven Gerrard, what he does have is a football brain he can pass 40 yard through balls. But wait a mintue Keane doesn't what to play passing football, that Ipswich used to Know for! Lets get some 6 foot plus strikers and play long ball! While the midfield run round making tackles & lobing it forward. Bring in a Steve Coppell or even Burley and will see Garven Shine again!

not read other comments yet, but honestly, just glad we have a manager with a strong enough back to recognise the current inadequacies and purge our where it's weak. Yes, he bought in some of them. But, at least he's getting rid too. Seems though that people don't really want to join us. Catch 22? I'll do the English thing: 'all eyes on wickham, he's our only hope'

Walters 'statement' sounds like the type of thing put out by managers - he's not making an early play to be considered as player/manager when keane goes, is he?
