Clegg: Deals Could Be Done Before Exits Thursday, 15th Jul 2010 20:23
Chief executive Simon Clegg says boss Roy Keane will be given the cash to sign the right player at the right price before any unwanted members of his squad are moved on. However, Clegg says no deals are currently imminent.
The Blues chief executive says potential targets are being eyed: “There is nothing likely to happen for a while, but we have players we are looking at and if it was thought they would make a big difference — and the price was right — a deal could be struck without having to clear the decks first.”
A fortnight ago, Keane revealed that the Blues had failed to land his main two targets, understood to be Crystal Palace skipper Shaun Derry, now with QPR, and Cardiff’s Michael Chopra, but felt that one of those deals could be revived.
Clegg and owner Marcus Evans are keen to reduce the wage bill and the club have circulated a list of eight players who are available for transfer.
Last week, Crystal Palace boss George Burley made his interest in midfielder Owen Garvan known, but Keane denied that the Blues had received a formal bid.

Promising news, but if Roy has identified his targets, why has there been little action? Perhaps ME realises that time is running out and has changed his mind - allowing signings before some are sold?

sounds about right jas0999 ME thought we would have got rid of a few more players by now, but surely 2 of the biggest earners have already gone with the 2 wrights being shown the door.

Clegg has broken the silence!! Where has he been? I want to hear more from him, such as what our target is for next season. Is it still promotion? Is top six enough? Where are we aiming for and what sort of money will we spend to achieve it? It's good news that we can potentially make signings before players leave, after all most of the transfer listed players will probably not move on (even on free transfers they will stay and take the better wages on offer here). I keep reading about these "two targets". Keane said he wanted five players to come in so that we can challenge for the top six. Surely we have a long list of players under consideration rather than just two?! I can think of many players I'd like to see come here, although that list is getting smaller as other clubs buy players (e.g. Norwich getting Simeon Jackson for £600K, a 23-year-old who has scored 35 goals in the last two seasons for Gillingham).

Perhaps M.E and S.C have finally realised that we may not be able to offload everybody that we want to and that without any additions our squad is looking thin in certain areas. Then again, it might just be a statement to try and calm the depression and unease that most of us seem to be feeling about ITFC and next season. He says that nothing is imminent, yet surely if Keane knows who he wants then a bid would be put in straight away? For what its worth, I think some of the "unwanted 8" will leave, possibly loans but not until last day of window leaving us with no time to buy. Perhaps the club has now realised this and decide they may have to buy first? I hope so.A signing or 2, especially a goalscorer and a right back would give everyone at the club, especially us fans a much needed boost

Roy has identified his targets but SC & ME have not completed the deals. Perhaps they have finally woke up and realised its only just over 3 weeks to go till the new season its about time we sign someone! We are not far away from being a good side. If all the players next season can really raise there game and play like pro's and we can sign maybe chopra or someone of his calibra we could make the top six? If we made the play-offs next season it would be a really good achievement.

Mmmm not a good sign IMO Keane identifies the players he wants, Clegg/Evans don't sign them presumably because of wages, Keane says he can't buy until he sells and now Clegg says that's not so......Only got one question? What the feck is going on at Portman Road Mr Clegg??????

More signings doesn't mean guaranteed success, the only thing that can be guaranteed is discontent with a large number of signings. Especially if the chosen 1st XI aren't winning games. A tighter squad means better morale, which can't be a bad thing surely. One or two signings should do the business in my opinion.

Isn't it the case of when ME took over we all believed the good times were comming, we have lost some quality players, got a manager that i don't think has a clue/is not proven, we are not going to buy promotion, thats now obvious, RK is not the man to do it on a budget, bring back Mr Royle, we might have a chance. its sickening to think that the last 3 seasons have all been progressivly worse than yje one before ,we need a cash injection for players or a manager that can do deals

I don't think I have ever gone into a new season supporting town feeling this worried/negative before. Last season was the least creative I hve ever seen, I honestly don't think we have a player who can turn a match in the whole squad. Signings needed badly mr keane/clegg/Evans!!

I have heard tht Jason Roberts is available at Blackburn he would be fantastic in championship and has proven record of helping teams get promoted strong, quick and a natural goalscorer would be brilliant alongside Wickham go on Keane hope your reading this he is your man

ME has given Keano money to assemble a squad and I think if that squad doesn't perform early then Keano will be on his way. ME will then either provide his successor with cash or (hopefully) allow Keano to strengthen.

bedsitfc-Morrison has signed for Sheffield Wednesday fella. Does seem that the left hand isnt speaking to the right with Keane & Clegg at the moment. Luckily we still have a few more weeks of pre-season so any deals to be done would have a little bit of bedding in at least. A new striker would be nice, Chops, Hooper or Jay Simpson please Mr Keane, Mr Clegg :)

Yes last seasons squad underperformed big time but Its no good buying players no better than what we already have. Anyway Wickham will score 15 , as will stead if given a run in the side. We will need another right back, and cover in central midfield with trotter and colback gone and if a decent striker were available that would be great.Hopefully civelli will also be fully fit. But less hype will mean less pressure. Its a case of being less scizophrenic and not chopping and changing the side so much. What we have is already capable of top six but it is a case of As Philip hope cobbold put it ''Just pull your fingers out chaps'' What a classic !!!!
