Kennedy at Town on Friday
Kennedy at Town on Friday
Saturday, 24th Jul 2010 09:52

Cardiff City left-back Mark Kennedy is understood to have been at Portman Road yesterday to talk personal terms and to undergo a medical. As reported last night, Town and the Bluebirds are believed to have agreed a £75,000 fee for the 34-year-old ex-Ireland international.

Kennedy was previously targeted by Roy Keane back in March and prior to that in January. A left-back is very much on Keane’s summer wish-list with Shane O’Connor the only left-footed natural full-back currently at the club.

Kennedy is a player well-known to Keane, the two having played together for the Republic of Ireland, for whom the Dubliner won 34 caps, scoring four goals.

The 5ft 11in tall left-back or winger played youth football at Home Farm where the likes Owen Garvan, Shane Supple and Alan Lee also spent time as youngsters and where Garvan’s father is a coach.

Kennedy’s first English club was Millwall, who he joined in 1992, moving on to Liverpool in 1995 for £1.5 million. After three years at Anfield, during which time he went on loan at QPR, Kennedy signed for Wimbledon for £1.75 million.

A year later he made a switch to Manchester City for £1 million, then after two years at Maine Road Kennedy moved on to Wolves for £2 million.

In 2006 after five years at Molineux, Kennedy joined Crystal Palace on a free transfer, moving on to Cardiff in the summer of 2008, again on a free.

Since his switch to Wales, Kennedy has made 69 starts and seven sub appearances but without scoring.

Meanwhile, academy midfielder Elliot Scotcher has been named on the bench for the Wales U17s for this afternoon’s game against Sweden in Falkenberg.

The match is the last in the friendly tournament with Wales having lost 2-1 to Iceland and drawn 1-1 with Norway. Scotcher won his first two U17 caps in those games, coming on as a sub in the first and starting the second.

totally agree that no1 shld criticise kennedy as he shld b a gud signing, the kind of experience we need at left bck. the only negative frm this imo is, that the signing we need above all others, as every1 keeps saying, is a striker, & theres still no sign of us signing 1, despite keane saying that his priority. without 1, it wont matter how strong our defence is, we will struggle 2 stay up. if u dont believe me, ask gareth mcauley, who got rerlegated with leicester 4 that exact reason. lets hope theres sum1 in the pipeline.

Could he possibly be used at a centre-back ?
I mean with him and possibly finnan coming in, we would need some youth like o'connor.
Some kind of ... Finnan McAuley Kennedy O'Connor ?
It's just an idea, it depends on how versatile Kennedy is ?

Mark is not a great defender and never was to be honest. Playing him in the centre would be dodgy as his heading is not the best. He has also had his share of injury troubles through the years.
However he does have his good points. Technically he is very good. Good control and a nice passer of the ball. His delivery at set pieces with his left foot is good also. He has learned how to tackle over the past 6 years and has great experience to help Peters and O'Connor develope as attacking full backs.
I think he is here to provide cover to the younger lads.
A good short term signing!

tractorboyz82, he would'nt have benn 'free' as we would have had to pay his high wages.

Kennedy is a cheaper signing than Rosenior would have been, plus gives us experience.

Not exactly a signing to get everyone excited but he does have bags of experience and can play in positions where we are short. He is also it seems available for a small outlay, so I feel he maybe a good signing. Should he sign he will get my full support. Here's hoping we get a few more players in by end of window, namely a goalscorer, a right back and perhaps a pacy wideman

there would have been no fee just wages so wouldnt be that different plus we could sell rosenior if things didnt work out.kennedy will still be on good money he signed a contract at cardiff so we must have offered a better one as this will prob be his last season.i understand what your saying about experience but the one thing we realy lack in is pace.good luck to him but id rather have rosenior.

Perhaps Paulnstar, the ex-bearded one has radically expanded his scouting network: dodgy Irish, second-rate Mackems and now ol'-timers.

I think the signing of mark kennedy would be a god thing. he was part of a very successful team last year with cardiff. he is inexpensive, highly experienced and from all accounts a competent player, possesing good technical and passing ability. he is however in the last throws of his career, aged 34, surely tho, he is being brought in to add experience and cover to the defence. i see it as a short-term signing, someone to help bridge the gap between youth and experience and allow those youngsters at the club, like peters, smith and o'connor, to break into the team and cement positions without being relied on to perform week in and week out. it it our younger stars that will really move this team forward. this signing may not be exciting but i dont think that makes it a bad signing, in fact, an astute signing can often be of far more value then a big name signing. this would appear to be a very good bit of business.

it would seem those who blasted 'pro-keane' fans for being fickle and beleiving that 'keane could do no wrong' despite a torrid season have lost the plot. the negativity on here from those 'anti-keane' fans would seem to have surpassed debate about the club and changed into constant complaint about anything the manager does, to the point that it seems they care more about seeing him fail and getting on his back, even if it is at the expense of our much loved club. its almost as if he can do no right in your eyes.

I am neither 'pro-keane' or 'anti-keane', I am pro ipswich and i really dont think things at the club are in as dire straits as so many claim. the players keane has been targetting would improve our squad and team but we all knew he would have to sell before he could buy, now things are starting to move forward and still people complain.

i will not always agree with everything keane does or with fellow town fans on the abilities of players, that is the subjective nature of football but what i will always try and do is look objectively and fairly on the news that is reported and base my posts on that. I think we can have a good season, hopefully we can bring in two or three more players and we will see an improved team this time around.

Sorry blueandred if I'm not more positive, but I have lost all faith in Keane's ability to sign decent players. He only seems to go for players he has managed or played with. Is because he has no confidence in his own ability. What happened to our scouting network? I fail to see how kennedy will improve the side? Is any better than David Wright? There must be some decent young players lower league? Take Mick Mccarthy he seems to find bargains lower league. I'm not normal so negative, but the style of football and some of the signings have to questionable? I really hope I wrong and this season will be different and you can so told you so, I love this club and want them to do well, just thing Roy's had more money then any other Ipswich manager and we are seeing little progress, If we were building a decent young side bit like Burley did, and there were signs we moving in right direction, playing decent football, then you would settle for a mid table finish, but so for there has been little to convince me that there will be any improvement on last season. I hope I'm wrong!

34 years old & way past his best. Clearly a desperation signing. Surely we can do better than this?
Keeping David Wright would have been a better option.

mightytown: I agree 100%, pretty much what i posted some weeks ago when i first joined the forum. I am a Town Fan... problem is the anti RK brigade are so vociferous in their damnation of all things RK, I've ended up having to defend his corner all the time. I don't think he did well last year but he IS our manager and will get my support whilst he is… I also strongly believe that many of the anti-RK group will go some way to assisting his departure by booing/moaning etc come the new season. How will this help the team? If you are a true ITFC supporter… support the team! And to be on here blasting a new transfer before you have even seen him play is plainly madness! He could end up being the bargain of the centaury… or not… but as he will be wearing a town shirt, he deserves our support.
Let me put it another way; what would you prefer RK to sign, a player that has played at the highest level with one of the top 4 clubs in England, who is getting towards the end of his career or a complete unknown? Coz that's the choice you will have for only £75k… given the loss of Delaney and the fact our two “potential” current full backs are either young or very inexperienced in that position, doesn't that make an older head a better option? And before you all shout “D Wright”, Mr D Wright is NOT an attacking full back, which is obviously what RK wants. Kennedy is…

So this guy made it to the championship final, no town player did. So it's no improvement right?

Good signing. We've been crying out for a couple of experienced thirtysomethings for more than a year now. Finally got one. With Delaney out for a while, it's asking a lot of O'Connor and Smith to man the left hand-side every game (not to mention Civelli coming back slowly). You can't spend forever looking to build a team of 25-28 year olds on 4 year contracts. Sometimes 30+ year old players can be crucial just for a year.

blue_thru_n_thru added 00:13 - Jul 25
granted this isnt something to sing and dance about but left back is a problem area, we dont have many/any players who can deliver a decent set piece and he has experience to help out the less experienced players, particularly in defence. I know McA isnt inexperienced but asking him to talk 3 defenders through games as well as him playing his game is asking too much.

Also, i wonder if these moaners are the same moaners who claimed our last signing was too young, inexperienced and not ready. Moaning for the sake of moaning?
