Scotland Unbelievably Close to Ipswich?
Scotland Unbelievably Close to Ipswich?

Wigan Athletic striker Jason Scotland is tipped to be the player boss Roy Keane said he was “unbelievably close” to signing yesterday. The 31-year-old former Swansea frontman appears likely to leave the DW Stadium during the close season as part of a clear-out by boss Roberto Martinez.

Rumours regarding the Trinidad and Tobago international appeared on the TWTD Message Board last night and have persisted this morning with claims of an initial loan deal to give the clubs time to settle the terms of a two-year permanent switch. The story has subsequently been picked up by national newspapers with a fee of £750,000 claimed, while there are reports elsewhere that the player is weighing up the switch.

Scotland started his career his career in his home country with San Juan Jabloteh and Defence Force, who Carlos Edwards was also with earlier in his career.

In 2003 he joined Dundee United after a trial, moving on to St Johnstone two years later and then Swansea City for a fee of £25,000 in 2007.

Scotland enjoyed a hugely successful spell with the Swans, netting 29 goals in all competitions during their 2007/08 League One promotion campaign and 24 in the Welsh side’s first year back in the Championship.

Last summer the 5ft 8in tall striker moved on to Wigan for £2 million but the switch hasn’t been a success, the Trinidadian netting only one league goal last season.

Nicknamed Rocket, Scotland has won 41 full international caps and has scored eight goals, playing alongside Town midfielder Carlos Edwards and former Blues loanee Stern John.

Yesterday, boss Roy Keane said he was very near to adding a striker to his squad and hinted that that player might not be Cardiff’s Michael Chopra, the man understood to be his number one target.

The Blues boss also said that he had a number of forward players in his thoughts: “There are two or three players I’ve got in mind in terms of attacking positions that we need. The deals we’re looking at would be permanent because we need some permanent players who we know will be at the club for two or three years to help bring it forward.”

Scotland AND Chops, I don't see how anyone could complain. But if our only forward addition is Scotland, than I would worry

Keane loves his big target men. He brought kenyone Jones to sunderland so Scotland could be a similar type of signing? With the chopra deal ive just seen there transfer emberago has been lifted which mean they are more likely to sell as there will be able to buy. Next week should be intresting.
KEANO IS the man!

whereas he's not a long-term option he would be a very good signing... has shown his worth in this league before... happy about this...

I hope we are in for Jay Simpson as well, this is the sort of player we should be looking at as well-young, hungry, brought up the Arsenal way and going for only £1.5 million.

Sounds like a great addition to the squad providing there's another striker and/or whittingham (hopefully and) on the way as well. Think the rust that comes with not scoring might be there though and can't really see him emulating his previous championship seaason but please please prove me wrong!

Would be a decent signing..pretty quick & does put his chances away, though I must stress that quite a few of his goals for the Swans came from the penalty spot...played the majority of his time at Swansea as a lone striker too.

finidigeorge, so scoring 21 goals in a season doesn't constitute a good season then? Moron.

As previously said, if this is as well as Chopra then happy days. Not enough on his own though I fear...

Would be a great addition to the squad, at least he knows where the goal is.
Would like to see at least 1 more striker too,and no not necesarily Chopra,(although wouldnt say no!).

Lightninboy....... re Osmans shirt, perhaps he still has it!
replicas like it though are plentiful on ebay(other auction sites are available)

Like many others, I am not to enthusiastic about this prospect. He's 31 now - I would prefer a younger, hungrier, striker joining us.

I can't get too excited. Shades of Lisbie, with a couple of good seasons and the wrong side of 30. Gary Hooper would have been my preference, but we missed that boat. I'm sure Keane knows better than me though!

Good signing. he should work really well with wickham when wickham is well. Read today that the chopra problem is that our £4m offer for chopra doesnt clear what they owe sunderland for chopra. They need £5m to make the deal. Chopra is not worth that.

Get counago, stead et al off our books and maybe get whittingham.
