Police Reviewing Footage of Leeds Clash
Police Reviewing Footage of Leeds Clash

Police are reviewing video footage of an incident involving around 40 Leeds supporters 15 minutes after Saturday’s game at Portman Road. Officers were forced to use dogs to control the group which was trying to force its way from the Leeds coaches in the Cattle Market car park back on to Portman Road.

A police spokesman: “Unfortunately there was an incident after the match where a group of around 30-40 away fans congregated and started to behave in a threatening manner towards other fans and the police.

“Police dogs were called in to support officers already on scene and the group was contained. Officers who attend football matches are aware that these situations can arise and it was dealt with quickly and professionally.

“The vast majority of fans were able to enjoy a good day out and a good game of football.”

Five arrests were made during the afternoon, while 27 supporters of either club were ejected from the ground.

During the second half of the game, which the Blues won 2-1, stand-in Town skipper Grant Leadbitter appeared to be hit by an object - reportedly a lighter - thrown from the Leeds section.

The last time the sides met, at Elland Road at the end of the 2006/07 season, the game was held up for 30 minutes after Leeds fans staged a pitch invasion and threw coins and other missiles at Town’s travelling support. Blues striker Alan Lee had all but confirmed the Whites' relegation to League One with a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw.

This is really interesting reading. Over here we dont split fans and have away sections and bathrooms, etc. Generally there is a section where away fans sit, but it isnt physically seperated from the rest of the crowd and away supporters are spread out throughout the stadium. We don't really have the need for police intervention as an occasional fight might break out between 2-4 fans, but those are rare.
The Columbus Crew played a friendly against Leeds over here in the mid-90s. There was a small group of Leeds suporters at the game who were singing before the game. We mostly took pictures of them thinking it was pretty cool. I am sure it wasnt the hooligans who made the trip tho.

OHIO ?? Fans there are not as passionate about football as we are in England !!! That is why there is no trouble and no need to have "away" enclosures.

PS Leeds fans are pure and utter scum. Rather have a beer with a Budgie !!!!

Something did happen in fact!During the match there were a number of incidents in the crowd and after the match foul mouthed Leeds scum, most of whom were old enough to know better, were acting in a threatening manner verbally abusing anyone they came across including women and children. Clearly nobody attends a football match expecting fans to behave like choirboys but this was unacceptable and made worse by the way it was dealt with, or rather not dealt with, by the police commander.

I would strongly suggest Suffolk police re-think their current policy regarding 'notorious' away fans before someone gets seriously hurt!

Well, it depends on what you mean by football. People are passionate about American Football, not so much as soccer. I enjoy both sports, but for some reason I enjoy following Town more than the Crew. Probably because of the emotion over there for the game. Even at Am Football games, which is where most Americans are the most passionate, the crowds are mixed. BTW, I know its not soccer, but needed to put it that way for simplicity.
I just find it really interesting is all. Do you think it is a holdover from the 70s?

Actually, Keano probably could outshine any Leeds thugs !!!! I have heard he karate kicks things in the dressing room, slaps players and uses intimidation to "motivate" players.

Ohio Tractor Boy - I am unqualified to comment about any American sports as I do not watch any of it but I don't get much feeling of any intensity. I may be wrong but it's just two different cultures. Anyway, I sent you a private message.

No idea about this report. However, I was behind a couple of cheeky Leeds fans in the Cobbold. Credit to these particular Leeds fans, as although they were in the wrong end, they gave a bit of banter, and gracefully took it back when we scored the winner. If only all the Leeds fans were like it...

what a game. really i think the police should of kept the leeds fans for 15mins and the police would have enough time to clear the town fans. its not the only mistake the police have made.

whoppit..I think the big difference is that there are so many sports over here it somewhat dilutes the focus. For instance, if the Browns arent doing well (imagine that) there is still Ohio State...or hockey...or baseball, etc.
When I tell Americans about English football, the thing that really catches their attention is the fact that so many teams are on top of each other geographically and that each has the ability to make it to the Premier League through promotion. We dont have that over here and everyone thinks that is pretty cool. Those two things may explain why English fans take it to a higher level than over here. I would love to get to PR for a game.

Was at an Oakland vs Kansas American Football match when I was over in the states - couple of fights in the crowd that day - was totally unexpected, but fun to know it's not just us who have idiots in the crtowd!

ChambersM, good to be back on normal ground - agreeing with you earlier made me dizzy!

Tearle - how can it be the governments fault and what the hell have the cuts got to do with anything? Match day policing (including increased presence around the ground/town caused by the event) is paid for by the club not out of local/central government funding.

And 10 minutes at the end of the game for ALL away fans should be adhered to as a matter of course - that way nobody's being singled out.

tearle1974 don`t blame the stewards
well hear me out i`m a season ticket holder in the lower south and there was a few leeds fans in there and they got ejected. but tell me how the stewards can eject a dad,mum and son who in my eyes did nothing wrong but have leeds shirts on, but at there were about 15 fans suited and booted who had there pre match meal in the restaurant to then be abusive when asked why they in there. And all the stewards can do is threaten to eject me when i asked that question.

So glad I didn't make it to the game now. Was supposed to be taking my 6-year-old daughter along. In the end, she wasn't well, so we stayed at home. It's a shame this kind of thing still happens, don't understand it.

There seemed to be quite a significant number of Leeds supporters in sections of the ground other than the Away section. We had two or three groups within a row or two of me in the Cobbold, all but one of whom were perfectly ok - and he disappeared at half-time! Interesting to speculate upon how these people obtain tickets though. They certainly didn't come across as 'locals' who live in Suffolk but support Leeds so could buy 'Home' tickets. Do they use mates to buy them before the game - or just get Matchday tickets when they turn up at the stadium ?- in which case heavy Yorkshire accents and blue and yellow shirts should be a clue as to where to allocate them a ticket. A female friend of mine and her son, exiting the Green King on to Portman Road at the end, found they were unexpectedly in the middle of a group of Leeds supporters, one of whom screamed directly into her son's face. I think, should Leeds avoid relegation, that both policing and stadium security might sensibly be reviewed before their next visit. Unless of course we leave them behind in the Championship!

HadleighBlueBoy is spot on really. It's not "the police" that are to blame but the people in charge of them.

Im sure the numerous officers on the ground saturday had little choice in the tactics chosen on policing the game. Therefore they have to do the job how they are ordered to and it cant be helped then if mistakes are made. Questions should be raised of the bosses in charge of these games and learn from mistakes made.

well said Devontractor and cr0wman, if only more could see it, it is sad to see we have people on here with same moronic attitude as those they criticise, calling opposition supporters scum ect, not all supporters are louts ! regardless of team they follow, thankfully they are a minority, but EVEN AMONGST OUR OWN .

The situation at Portman Road concerning the police is quite sad. It's not an easy task but overkill could be a term used at some games and not keeping up with the situation at others. We all know the budget is going to be cut but the police officer in charge needs to get a grip and use tatics that reduce the risk. A duty of care is required and implement common sense... This has been lacking at certain times. 99.9% think the police are doing a good job, but common sense should kick in and look after the home fans first and once the numbers are reduced let the away fan out, less police would also be required.
But also put it in context, I have been to alot of games abroad and have seen plastic bullets used, tear gas, horses, barbed wire put out and even AK47 prepared to be fired... so it's not all bad.

I work for the railway and had the unfortunate shift of taking the Leeds fans back to Peterborough.. The British Transport Police did a great job.. Ipswich Station was full of Police, 8 officers travelled on-board to Peterborough & back, & was met at Peterborough by even more Police with dogs.. Get In!

Glad to see that most people are of the view that individual police officers are not responsible for policing-policy on match days...what do the others think, that 200 officers just turn up at the stadium and make things up as they go along ? However, I still think that the club and the police should liaise very closely next time Leeds visit to address some of the points that have been made on here...

With all the CCTV & video footage inside & outside the ground, you would think that the authorities should be able to identify & prosecute the yobs i.e. those relieving themselves on on Sir Bobby's statue, the idiot who chucked the object at Leadbitter & anyone assaulting genuine fans afterwards. No doubt they will bottle it once again and these people will continue to get away with it. Real shame as there were many decent Leeds fans who did their team proud on Saturday but unfortunately all's been undone (again) by the fairly sizable group that seem intent in living in the 70's/80's. Think even Tim Nicebutdim wouldn't have let the away fans out at the same time. I'm surprised there wasn't more disorder given the atmosphere in the ground. Wish we had made £600k?

Why bother, nothing will be done as usual, and why can't they just be kept in for ten minutes as away fans always used to be ??
And just for the record, policing has always been pathetic at portman rd, especially when they actually have something to do !!!

I worked as a steward at PR many years ago and there was an incident during a game with Millwall when a fellow steward was assaulted (punched in the face) by a Millwall fan. This was reported to the police inside the ground who took absolutely no action. Also i remember Leeds used to bring their own stewards, i'm guessing this doesn't happen now. The worst trouble i personally witnessed was with leicester fans, women and old men were being attacked, which as we all know is the work of the cowardly, not a surprise really because cowards always 'mob up' to give themselves some balls, a few bevvies always help build a bit of bravado as well dont they? Hard men my a**e
