Keane: I Might Not Get Cash From Sales
Keane: I Might Not Get Cash From Sales
Thursday, 9th Dec 2010 12:54

Boss Roy Keane says he doesn’t expect to be given all the proceeds from any players who might be sold in January. Striker Connor Wickham, rated at £10 million, has again been linked with Tottenham and Liverpool in recent days, while a number of other Premier League clubs including Manchester United and Chelsea are believed to have been monitoring the England U21 international.

Keane said: “The club might receive offers for some of our players in January, but whether I get that money remains to be seen.

“It sounds great to say ‘sell one player for X amount and we can bring in three or four’, but it doesn’t work that way because we’ve still got look at the wages we’ve got at the club.

“So, identifying three or four experienced players would be the easy part, it’s getting deals done - which we’ve not managed to do before - that’s the problem.

“We need to be careful that one, that everyone thinks I’ve got £10 million to spend on three or four players or on wages. I don’t think that’s how it’s going to work.”

Speaking at Tuesday’s AGM, chief executive Simon Clegg said that there had so far been no concrete bids for Wickham and that the club wants to hang on to him for as long as possible: “There are no offers on the table for Connor, there is a lot of speculation, a lot of hot air out there. Roy and myself are clear that we’d like to retain him, as indeed is the owner.”

Clegg also made it clear that there would be scope for additions to the squad next month: "Every window that we have gone into we have invested in the playing squad and I don't see that changing in January.

"If the manager wants to bring in players in January then he will have the opportunity to do that."

he will be off, and the more it is talked up it might start a bidding war between these 'big' clubs.

one thing, it will certainly make his 'nett' transfer fees look good on his CV

When I saw this headline I thought "Great!". Throughout both his managerial posts he's shown an amazing propensity for wasting money (I'm not sure of the full details, but I think he got through something like 40 players at Sunderland in 2.5 seasons).

Here's the Roy way:
Get a player - does the team win? If not, get another player. Repeat ad nauseum until money or loan signings dry up.

Why bother trying to get the best out of anyone, or - shock, horror - paying them in their preferred position, when you can just spend some more cash and get someone else unsuitable in?

As has also been pointed out, he also gets most of his players in from the premiership where wages will be sky high compared to league 1. Out loan signings alone must be costing us a fortune in wages. And I doubt Leadbitter took much of a pay cut when he came here.

Oh, and while I'm here, it's been a while since anyone mentioned Jordan Rhodes. Everytime Roy goes on about needing to score more goals and gets in someone like Fallow to solve the problem I try not to cry.

Lots of talk and hype about Wickham - fact is the boy will have to move to a club such as Arsenal, Liverpool, Spurs etc; to progress his career.

Staying here will totally stall him - trying to play and impress in this current shambles will only serve to have a detrimental effect on both him personally, and his career.

If I were a parent of his, I would want him OUT as soon as possible.
Hate to have to say this - BUT IT IS FACT.

I see that Chopra has been told by Jones he is not a first team choise anymore.

Wickham gone for 8 million plus Townsend that leaves 5 million towards the 14 million loss and the other 3 Million on Chopra.

Would say yes to that as Wickham has been a let down so far (not his fault) so dont think we would miss him that much.

Having said that I would like to see Wickham (when fit) given a run in the team and see if he does live up to the hype. If so keep him and look to buy a proven goalscorer

If Wickham is sold there is no way Keane deserves to get 10 million to spend anyway? He has proven he has made mistakes in the transfer market since he has arrived. Save the dosh for the new manager and a bit more when the change happens.

Players like Wickham dont come along to often, but there's plenty of rubbish manager's like Keane who will waste the money.

i think keane has proven that he cant be trusted with the money' his new team he purchased and borrowed is one of the most expensive in the division and is a flop like himself

I would hazard a guess that the decision to sell Wickham (if that's what happens) might not be Keane's to make.

NO, NO, NO. He shouldn't be here let alone be allowed any more money to spend.
Here is who he has signed in 18 months which includes all loan signings too:- B Murphy, M Fulop, M Kennedy,S O'Connor, D Delaney, D O'Dea,T Brown, Zuiverloon, Leadbetter, Edwards, Townsend, Hourihane, Colback (x2), Livermore, C Healy, L Martin, Priskin, Scotland, S John, D Murphy, D Healy, Fallon.

That's 22 players in 18 months of which 13 are permanent signings, 2 teams to play 11 aside and we still have no team!!

HIS SQUAD, HIS SIGNINGS and he said when he joined we needed 2 or 3 more players!! Still doesn't know his best 11, best formation, plan B. How can he blame injuries!! He can't be trusted with any more money.

Any other name, any other club and he would be sacked. SImple as.

Tuesday was obviously a PR exercise and if we lose Saturday surely enough is enough. If he is still here for the Leicester game I think it would be time for the fans to show their true feelings cos I can't believe what an easy ride he gets when he is worse than John Duncan.

10 defeats already (14 all of last season) says it all. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

Mr Keane... Please just leave... You've done enough damage and achieved precisely nothing... No words, no excuses can disguise your inadequacies... It's over, it never really began... Please let us put your and your beige era behind us so that we can move forward again in the Ipswich way: stylish, passing football, exciting, positive, hopeful - something to look forward to...

STOP DRAGGING MY CLUB THROUGH THE MUD JUST SO YOU CAN PRACTICE BEING A MANAGER - HAVE SOME DIGNITY MAN...

Sell Wickham Buy a couple of good experienced players ( if he is given the money to spend) simple. Experience is what we lack.

hey shoop, if only it was that easy!
Keane had Shaun Derry and MaCormack ready to sign in the summer but the deals fell through likely due to wages etc. Pity as they are proven quality & experience that we so badly miss at the moment.
Keane is not the best manager (far from it) but his hands were tied a little with regards permanent transfers during the summer.
I also wonder if Lee Martin will be brought back in Jan. Keane hinted that he still expects him to return and perfrom at some stage. Maybe Priskin can inspire Lee to up his game.

To be fair to Lee Martin, on rare occasions you can see that he is a quality player. For some reason he just has never performed for us! Lets hope the charlton loan has given him the confidence he needs.

I must agree with Keano on this one, Cleggy is a Village Idiot at best and for me the one person taking the club in the wrong direction. RK has given the 'Execs' a number of targets over the last years which should have been getable given budget and status, but Cleggy and Co couldn't make the Club seem attractive enough to drop wages and play some football. No easy for any exec, but one that's little in the way of footballing or footballer experience is beyond unrealistic.

Fallon for Ms Wickham, jog on.
