Keane Again Bemoans Lack of Goals
Keane Again Bemoans Lack of Goals
Saturday, 11th Dec 2010 18:07

Boss Roy Keane felt the Blues were again made to pay for their failure to take their chances as his side slid to their sixth successive league defeat at Preston. Iain Hume’s second half strike gave the Lilywhites a 1-0 victory at Deepdale.

Keane said: “The first half was fine, no problem, but the game is 90-odd minutes long. We had good possession, we got into threatening positions, particularly in the first half and at the start of the second, but we don’t seem to be capable of scoring many goals, and that puts you under pressure constantly."

The Blues manager felt his side gifted the opposition another poor goal: “Repeating myself once again, we gave a soft goal away. It’s not as if teams are opening us up. After that we huffed and puffed without having that quality in the final third to get us back in the game.

“The second half performance was a bit disjointed. Once they’d got the goal they had something to hold on to, but we always expect more from the players, whether that’s in terms of creating that chance, that bit of quality, when in shooting positions hitting the target.

“But that’s been going on for a few months now, even last year. We don’t score many goals. Whether we play one up front or two up front, we don’t seem to have that little bit of quality in the box. And that’s the hardest part of football.”

Keane says there is no issue with his players’ application: “There’s no problem with the commitment and effort and possession, but you’ve got to score goals, and we don’t score enough of them.

“That’s nine defeats in 11 now and at any level in any league, in any country that is not good enough.”

The Irishman, showing signs of the return of the beard he sported during his latter days at Sunderland, still feels he can turn things around at Town but conceded that whether he will be able to is ultimately not up to him: “That’s out of my hands, don’t ask me questions I’ve got no control over.”

Preston manager Darren Ferguson, whose father Sir Alex was in the crowd, was pleased with the three points despite a poor beginning to the game: “We started really slowly, we couldn’t keep the ball well enough and they penned us in a little bit. It was a slow start and a nervy start.

“But we got a spell at the end of the first half of about 10 minutes where we got a lot of corners on the bounce and in the second half it was far, far better.

“I had to have a bit of a go at them at half-time, but they responded. We played really, really well in the first 20 minutes of the second half and that alone was enough to win us the game.”

As for Keane's current predicament, Ferguson said: “I don’t have to worry about Roy, he’s a very, very strong character. I’m sure he’ll be fine.”

wots all this talk about a new manager,we aint got rid of this one yet and i honestly cant see him going before May 2011 cos it simply would cost too much(get the feeling our chairman aint as loaded as we think). If RK walks fair enough but as for replacements i agree with keanish,Hughton in my opinion is not experienced enough,he got to the premiership with a premiership squad. We need a Holloway,Warnock, dare i say it,Burley kind of manager.Burley/Butcher together is my ideal first choice once we get rid of the clueless numpty we have now.

This is beyond a joke now. Why weren't Priskin & Townsend in the starting line-up? They were the best of a bad bunch against Swansea, and the continued omission of Jaime Peters baffles me.
Marcus Evans: if you read these posts, for the good of the club that I love, please sack this clueless oaf of a manager before he drags us down into League 1.

Keane... You & your players have had your xmas p%$sup in Manchester 2nite... It was an ideal opportunity to thank them for their hardwork (lack of) & say your goodbyes.... Now f@#k off & leave our club alone to try to recover something of this abysmal season before its too late... FORK! COYB!

How much longer will Keane's conscience allow him to stay ? He is clueless but unfortunately deluded and stubborn . Why didn't Priskin start the match ? Silly question . Look who is in charge ? ( not for long ! )

Hughton has immense experience gained from having worked with some really high profile managers at spurs. He achieved great results at Newcastle! He has a very high profile just now thanks to Ashley! And he is loved by all.. Imagine what he could do in the transfer Market.... Completely different to Keano! Sure Clegg should go too though! Coyb's!

I am all for sticking by the manager through thick and thin, and I don't doubt Roy has given it his best shot, but I can't see it ever working out, and I hope he comes to that realisation soon himself. I hope RK walks before he is pushed. The time has come for a fresh start. If we wait too long, the new manager will not have reasonable time to pull us out of the relegation fight - and that is where we now are. As to who it should be, that's a very open question. We have no reason to think Hughton is interested, and as sirburley said, he got Newcastle back up with a Premiership squad. (Still had to be done though.) There are probably many names out there we haven't even thought of, but it's got to be someone with a bit of experience and attacking flair. The worst-case scenario is that those of us who are left after the ship goes down (8000-9000?) will be watching League 1 next season and that we won't bounce straight back up. It's a long way from Sweden to Yeovil.

Sorry guys just read that Hughton is being lined up to take avrin grants job at West Ham,( re Telegraph). So start thinking again !!!
To think Bristol City are above us now, how many more to go above us ?????
I just wish we could get a strong assistant manager who could throw some more ideas in to the ring please.

Gus Poyet is a good shout but i wouldn't have too much confidence with him wanting to stay around if a Premier League club came in for him which is ultimately where he'll end up sooner or later.

Just like when some call for certain 'players' to join us the same with managers- We are not able to attract that quality anymore . Yes I would quite like to see Hughton but do you really believe he would come here !!!?? why - I say we need to look at a ex Ipswich Player as Manager( afew to choose from ) and an experienced Football man behind him - remember when P Taylor was linekd and keane nixed it ( that is a fact ) . I think one of the main problems is not only Clegg and Keane but our whole Coaching set up - Keane has bought chumos to the table - GO NOW - Hey at least Stevenage and Barnet are closer to me !!

Gus Poyet and Tauricco would be good, they would still make the starting line up. But I still fancy Butcher. Wheres Joe Royle now. You would never get a headline talking about lack of goals from him.

Same old same old.... Keane your excuses and player selection are cr@p! the quality of our squad has gone backwards under Keane, with exception of maybe Leadbitter and MacAuley. Loanees are not the answer.
the players shipped out of PR were equal or better. we were supposed to be pushing for the prem this season... instead it looks like a relegation fight...

Keane out ... Curbs or if we can afford Jol

all the names chucked around seem a lot better than the present deadhead. but because this uselesspiece of sh=te has blown all the spending money on these crap players who we probably wouldn't be able to sell for one tenth of what keane paid for them then we are still going to find it tough to get out of the mess this lunatic has placed us in....... this time last year he should of gone.he has buggered the club for several years i would say but the first step is getting rid of him and getting someone good or average or even below average to start the great turn around

I am genuinely worried that we could be heading for the 3rd tier of English football for the first time since 1956/57 season.....we have to change things NOW.....Marcus Evans & Simon Clegg must face fact that its time for a change of Manager otherwise the unthinkable could happen.
