Keane Again Bemoans Lack of Goals
Keane Again Bemoans Lack of Goals
Saturday, 11th Dec 2010 18:07

Boss Roy Keane felt the Blues were again made to pay for their failure to take their chances as his side slid to their sixth successive league defeat at Preston. Iain Hume’s second half strike gave the Lilywhites a 1-0 victory at Deepdale.

Keane said: “The first half was fine, no problem, but the game is 90-odd minutes long. We had good possession, we got into threatening positions, particularly in the first half and at the start of the second, but we don’t seem to be capable of scoring many goals, and that puts you under pressure constantly."

The Blues manager felt his side gifted the opposition another poor goal: “Repeating myself once again, we gave a soft goal away. It’s not as if teams are opening us up. After that we huffed and puffed without having that quality in the final third to get us back in the game.

“The second half performance was a bit disjointed. Once they’d got the goal they had something to hold on to, but we always expect more from the players, whether that’s in terms of creating that chance, that bit of quality, when in shooting positions hitting the target.

“But that’s been going on for a few months now, even last year. We don’t score many goals. Whether we play one up front or two up front, we don’t seem to have that little bit of quality in the box. And that’s the hardest part of football.”

Keane says there is no issue with his players’ application: “There’s no problem with the commitment and effort and possession, but you’ve got to score goals, and we don’t score enough of them.

“That’s nine defeats in 11 now and at any level in any league, in any country that is not good enough.”

The Irishman, showing signs of the return of the beard he sported during his latter days at Sunderland, still feels he can turn things around at Town but conceded that whether he will be able to is ultimately not up to him: “That’s out of my hands, don’t ask me questions I’ve got no control over.”

Preston manager Darren Ferguson, whose father Sir Alex was in the crowd, was pleased with the three points despite a poor beginning to the game: “We started really slowly, we couldn’t keep the ball well enough and they penned us in a little bit. It was a slow start and a nervy start.

“But we got a spell at the end of the first half of about 10 minutes where we got a lot of corners on the bounce and in the second half it was far, far better.

“I had to have a bit of a go at them at half-time, but they responded. We played really, really well in the first 20 minutes of the second half and that alone was enough to win us the game.”

As for Keane's current predicament, Ferguson said: “I don’t have to worry about Roy, he’s a very, very strong character. I’m sure he’ll be fine.”

OrkneyBlue "Has anyone ever been on such bad form and still been in employment". The answer is yes, the current England manager and my forecasts for Kirkwall Airport back in 1995!

May be we should all go on a "student" type protest down to London and make our views heard outside the officies of ME. That would make him listen!

Lack of goals, whose fault is that? ....... Who sold the goal scorers? .............Who had an ego issue with the goal scorers and they wanted out? ..... Who bought a load of rubbish who cant score? ........... who is not motivasting the team? .......... who is NOT entertaining the supporters, (Customers)? ...............who is arrogant and think its not me .... its the supportedrs fault? ......... Let me think!!!!!! The answer is inside the Christmnas Cracker, its the Joke and its RK ..... come on Mr Evans, give us a treat at Christmas
and give us a bit of hope, get rid of RK.....

I have never been so depressed in all the years I have been a supporter.I will buy a season ticket for next season even if we go down.( Hate the man not the club,) but as for going to see the matches, IF he is still our manager I don't know.
Please GO NOW you are killing the club we love. Magilton did struggle at the end but he played so much better football. As did Burley. I have seen Sunday league football played better.

And, on the subject of RK bemoaning the lack of atmosphere at PR…. We've had NOTHING much to get fired up about have we Roy? In fact, I think we've been very patient.
Speaking of which, maybe RK has forgotten Ipswich Town's first home match in the Premiership under G Burley? — HE was playing. The atmosphere from us, from the start, was deafening; we drove our brilliant team of players on with a wall of sound - Sir AFerg even commented about it to the press afterwards. We scored first, drawing 1-1 (I think Becks equalised and Man U made several desperate substitutions in the second half — you could see the disbelief in their eyes).

Anyway, I digress. Don't blame the fans Roy. Don't blame the players. Don't blame the loanees. Don't blame the lack of funds (you've squandered millions)….

Stop waffling. Just Go.

brendanh - I am sorry, but I will just have to correct you there re Stead a) Roy clearly stated that he didn't want to sell him b) Stead had only scored 6 goals the year before - hardly prolific I'm afraid.

PSGBlue, haha! Fair point on Capello, and if by forecast you mean weather then plenty get that wrong. Four seasons in a day up here and thats in August!
When i posted "anyone else" that was'nt a desperate cry is was a question...actually thinking about it maybe it was a cry for change!

After a week of contemplating his own anus I half hoped that RK would have a slight understanding of what was required. No chance. The shrink obviously convinced him that his massive ego combined with his natural ability to walk on water will be enough to sustain his position with his employers. So we get the obvious tactic of dropping the best two players from last week and end up losing AGAIN.

As a supporter of 50 years plus I have never experienced such desperate times before. It's embarrassing now and there's no sign of an end. The relegation season in 2002 was hard to take but then we were being taken apart by Arsenal, Liverpool et al in the Premiership. Now we go to Preston whose record this season is truly horrendous and they comfortably take the points.

I could write RK's Monday press conference report here; defensive failings, inability to score, need characters in the team now. How long must we listen to this rubbish?

The bottom line is that on current form we are dead in the water. League 1 beckons. I'm afraid that our Titanic has hit the iceberg and our captain (RK) is more concerned with organising the band playing on the deck than trying to save the ship.

Please Santa deliver us from this continuing hell.

I think he'll walk, with 34 million in the bank according to the Rich List he ought'nt to worry about compensation. So who do we go for as a replacement, Curbishley, Jol, O'Neill.....forget 'em they will only use us as a stepping stone towards a Premiership job and they'd be off at the first opportunity. Try Chris Hughton or even Paul Lambert says he diving for cover...............!!

Blue - - - 73. Agree.

Season 2002 - Don't forget the brilliant run of wins we suddenly went on, by a good core team, just before The (freefall) End came. Manger lost the plot. Sport Shrinks in. Poor signings. Desperate Loanees in. Dressing Room in disarray…. Ring any bells?

I think were going to struggle to stay in the division to be honest unless big changes are made a.s.a.p. the combination of a clueless manager and loads of loanees is a recipie for disaster.
Our faceless owner has a lot to answer for and fans will soon be turning on him also, we were so gratefull for him to clear the clubs debts when he took over but surely he can see that the roy keane experiment hasnt worked and its time for action before its too late and were down the pan.
Come on Evans put a stop to this shambles were becoming a joke of a football club!

barbiekiller added 21:08 - Dec 11
Blandford - totally agree. I've always been prepared to accept that a manager needs time to bed in, build a squad and mould them into a team that fits his vision. And more than 18 months down the line we look far worse than we ever did under Magilton or even Royle, in terms of results and quality of football. Loyalty can only stretch so far and enough is enough. We need a new manager in place before the transfer window opens even if there's no money available otherwise League One beckons.

I really hope that I'm wrong but I agree with those who think Keane is only here as the high profile p(m)uppet to front the ME Corporate Logo. If ME thinks he can make more money indirectly from media air play than he would through promotion then I fear we are in for a long hard winter under RK.

There's no real point in commenting on the recent performances as its already been said..... but I for one, can't remember a more depressing time in the 45 years that I've been supporting our great proud club.

Another clueless display from Keane, how much more damage can he do before he gets the sack? Have some decency and walk out man, you're an embarrassment to this fine and once proud football club. Evans - we won't get so much media coverage in league 1.

If we are too bring in a manager - and unfortunatley I think we should - we MUST do it now. If we do it after the Leicester game then we could face 4 games over christmas without a manger. The alternative is maybe worse -4 games over Xmas with keane in charge.
Nothing against Smith and Troy Brown but i think it just shows what a mess the club is in if these are the defenders we are looking to to keep us up. Smith at fault last week, Brown asleep for the goal today - Delaney is obviously going in the transfer window, McCauley can sign for someone else for next year as of 1st jan. Mismanagement at all levels - what a mess.
