Town in Running for St Ledger?
Town in Running for St Ledger?

Town have made an enquiry to Preston North End regarding central defender Sean St Ledger, according to one of this morning’s tabloids. However, the Blues were reportedly put off by the Lilywhites’ £2.5 million asking price.

Irish international St Ledger, 26, came through the youth system at Peterborough during which time he went on loan to Stevenage Borough.

After making the breakthrough at Posh, the Birmingham-born defender joined Preston in July 2006 for a fee of £225,000.

Having impressed at Deepdale, St Ledger joined Middlesbrough on loan at the start of last season. The short-term spell was expected to turn into a £4 million permanent switch but the 5ft 11in tall defender failed to settle in the North-East and returned to Preston.

Town could be in the market for another experienced central defender if Gareth McAuley opts not to sign a new contract at Portman Road with his current terms up at the end of the season.

Boss Paul Jewell said yesterday that he plans to speak with McAuley before the end of the week.

Very good player, possibly worth £2 mill. even if Gareth decides to stay.

A great player, i would say 2million is good businesss he is only 26 and coming into his prime. It would create good competition for the two centre backs.

I think its only paper talk though

this is one of the better ideas I've heard for possible transfer targets.
I still wonder how we can afford the transfer fee and wages of the likes of St. Ledger but not Norris or McAuley. Surely if its not broke dont fix it? why replace our best players with players who might not settle here?

He's a great defender, certainly not a donkey, but he does struggle on firm ground.

Being a footballer I bet he ain't no saint either - if he's that good why are Preston rock bottom? is he there captain.

Would be a brilliant signing..always liked the look of him..bit much tho at £2.5m.

Disagree that 2.5m is too much, very good player and will continue to improve. Exactly the sort of player we should be buying.

The statement that we don't want to spend £2.5m is more of the worry.

St Ledger is very good defender and very experienced for a 26 yr old defender with his best years ahead. He is also a huge threat at set pieces.
Solid, dependable, intelligent and no slouch either.
He has played well against players like Berbatov, Henry, Iaquinta, Gilardino and many other very good international strikers over the past 3-4 years.

Sign him up!

Great idea. Affordable wages I would have thought. If Jewell could pull this one off then it would be a great signing!

If he does sign, we'll win the league by a canter!

Very good player, but can we really afford this?
How many players have we now been linked too? The list goes on and on.
If we can sign him, get him. He would be a quality replacement for GM (if he goes- which seems more and more likely)
