Austin Agrees Burnley Deal - Reports
Austin Agrees Burnley Deal - Reports
Friday, 28th Jan 2011 12:16

Town target Charlie Austin is widely reported to have agreed to join Burnley on a three-and-a-half-year deal, subject to a medical. The Swindon striker was at Portman Road for talks yesterday but was unable to agree terms with the Blues.

The Clarets matched Town’s offer — reported to be anywhere from £1.2 million to £2 million - and were given permission to speak to the 21-year-old, who travelled to Turf Moor this morning.

Blackpool and Southampton were also chasing the former Poole Town man but failed to agree a price with the Robins.

How is this Cleggs fault?? He's obviously been told how high we can go by the owner and won't be the club in jeopardy becuase of it. If an unproven league one player is asking for silly money you can't just bow to his demands. Until you know the absolute truth there is no way you can start blaming Clegg just because he won't break our wage structure, is that really him doing wrong?

I'm torn between thinking clegg is in a position where he has to abide to ME and what he is prepared to pay and the wage structure in place, and then the pattern that is emerging here.. We must have had a handful of players come into the club for talks and subsequently not signed?! Something smells.. Perhaps he's a greedy lad? But then are burnley financially better off and able to offer the wages! Maybe we're all looking into this a little bit too much, he may simply have preferred to play for eddie howe?

Anyway..i'm not going to lose any sleep, jewell has a pretty decent track record in the transfer market, he'll find somebody else!

I just can't believe this. How much did we offer this 21 year old proven goalscorer who we could possibly sell on at a big profit one day? By contrast how much we are likely to be paying a 32 year old injury prone midfielder who wont even be our player?

I'm excited about the Jimmy Bullard thing but surely someone has got their priorities wrong - especially if David Norris walks too?

What is it with all the abuse of Clegg. None of you have a clue about what went on. It seems to me that we have a "structure" for wages and permanent signings which bodes well really. It means that every player knows we have a limit and that we can walk away from a deal too. Anyone in sales will tell you that you cannot always win the sale. Sometimes you have to say "that's a fair offer". If Austin wants to play elsewhere then the "package" he has may in his eyes seem better at Burnley. It may even have come down to things like "will I start every game"? Not likely to be that reason but modern contracts are very complicated.
We move on - find another target. We ain't in a panic, we won't get relegated with this current squad; and the play-offs are so far off that we could relaistically just ignore the rest of the window...

I am not saying he is on 20k - no one knows what he was asking - we can all speculate - maybe , just maybe he wanted to play for Eddie Howe - not unreasonable - as he knew him from before and tried to sign him before
J45 - Football is a business - if you were offered two identical jobs one working for someone you knew on better terms where would you go ??

I would love to sign austin, but if our pay structure didn't allow it then we did the right thing. What we can afford to pay someone should be based on incomings from attendance, merchandising and tv revenue. If his demands did't fit then we did the right thing. Clegg and Evans should be congratulated for sticking to their guns. I have not forgotten about us going into administration and ripping off loads of small businesses! We should be run as a community club and pay what we can afford! Plenty of other clubs have since gone into administration and others are very close. If we had no wage structure and Evans went then we would be screwed with no real revenue and massive outgoings. Sorry people, but thats life and looks like we've done the right thing. Bullard by contrast is on a temporary contract to end of season not a 3+ deal so not really comparable or a risk at all. I am disappointed if we haven't signed him but happy if that is the reason why.

How can we possibly throw a hissy fit when we have no idea what personal terms he was insisting on. Clegg does know the finances and if he deems this lad too expensive then he's doing that for the good of the club. We dont know the whole picture and if he's just after the money then good luck to him and find someone else who has a real desire to play at the right kind of club that we are.

Get over it folks, get some perspective and have some patience.

Smithy, wot do you think Cleggs job is then, he hires and fires - he hasn't done much of theaformer recently, and what has been done hasn't produced results

Annoying. Really seemed like we were odds on to get him. Then once again someone nips in to steal him. Seriously hope they were offering him the moon because I've been to Burnley and quite frankly it's depressing if he prefered it to Ipswich.

Some of the fools that visit this site have a lack of ambition and drive that astounds me!
CLEGG is useless... So far in his job he has managed to expose us to the potential of losing players that he signed potentially costing the club millions in lost transfer revenue. He has also more importantly FAILED to sign players who are sat in the bloody office with him! All of which have secured contracts with our competitors!
He has to go and be replaced with someone wh has more knowldege and nouce in the market place - Agents must laugh when he sits in front of them! He knows fcuk all about football, even less about the club and our history and I doubt he can see any dreams or ambition about the club and so here we are back at square one!!! BOLLOX!

Until ITFC sort themselves out, (and that will be with the ball hitters that we've already got) and Paul Jewel can show that we are not another Derby/ Sheffield scenario in his CV we will not be able to attarct the bright young players. The players and manager have got half a season to show if they are worthy of support and are fit to wear the shirt. Hopefully we'll still be in the Championship in the summer and will then have something to sell to prospective players. Come on you foot ball players.

Adam Le Fondre

Or someone else like Simon Cox from WBA.

Very good League One player now doing nothing at WBA.

Think this is ridiculous! Its so obvious that the move is completly money orientated...... And if the rumours are true that we offered him 12k a week than him and is agent are ridiculous! Its so obvious that ipswich is better in every respect! Never mind...... Am already looking forward to going to turf moor and watching macca absolutly crunch him! And then wickham show him what he's missing out on!

This lad is quality. I am not sure how we can afford Bullards wage demands and not his - a young brught prospect. This smacks of us not signing Kevin Phillips.

FFS! I knew it was too good to be true! Bloody Clegg agian being a scrooge! Offer the man a decent wage and we would have bagged him! Sometimes you have to pay a premium if you want to progress, but oh no, Billionaire Evans couldn't part with a few grand a week more to take this club forward.

What a joke!

Gotta face facts a relegation scrap with poor service to strikers or a chance of promotion and good service. Which would you choose?
