Town Rebuff Double Palace Bid
Town Rebuff Double Palace Bid
Monday, 31st Jan 2011 16:51

Town have turned down an £800,000 bid from Crystal Palace for skipper David Norris and central defender Damien Delaney, according to reports in south London. Both players are amongst those whose Blues contracts are up at the end of the season.

Earlier today, boss Paul Jewell revealed that Town had received offers for two players and when asked said the duo involved weren’t Norris and Gareth McAuley.

Jewell spoke to Norris, McAuley and other soon-to-be-out-of-contract players — probably including Delaney — regarding their Town futures last week and http://www.twtd.co.uk/news.php?storyid=17817&title=jewell:_norris_and_mcauley_wa they all wanted to remain at the club.

Before Christmas, former boss Roy Keane hinted that Delaney may be one of a number of players whose current contract includes an option for a further year.

Good - we can ill afford to lose ANY permanent players if we are only going to sign one player from the non -leagues. We can not rely on loan players.

Anyone else think we should pop in a cheeky £100k bid for Ambrose in retaliation?

This is just bluster in an attempt to make the sale of Carroll less of a blow for the Geordie fans!
He just signed a new contract! He aint going anywhere, I hope.

£800k, I didn't know Palace had the money!

Palace actually have quite a lot of money since their takeover last summer. A friend of mine's a Palace fan and it's quite the myth that they're still skint. One of the four guys who make up their consortium sold Churchill Insurance a few years back for in excess of a billion quid. Let's see how serious they are...few hours left.

Maybe we should have countered that with a bid of £800K for their entire squad and stadium. We would still have been paying over the odds, south London muppets.
Re: Connor Wickham, Talksport were reporting earlier that he had been withdrawn from tomorrow's squad and was on his way to speak to Newcastle.

After Delaney's cracking goal for Nottingham Forest v us (while wearing a blindfold), I'm surprised there weren't more clubs in for him. However, we must keep him and Mac A ...

Norris, are you still here?

Yes tractaboy I do. At least that will stop him scoring against us every time we play them.

I understand your point ref,. ist's Evans setting the budget, and not Clegg.

But how do you explain therefore , the rationale to pay the larger % of Bullards £45k per week - yet we cant negotiate Austin's wage demands, that would almost certainly have been far less than Bullards, nor the Club's willingness to pay Norris / McA's contract requests? Which again, Im sure, are far less than we have just agreed to pay a LOANEE!!

Retro Blue....

Don't forget that Bullards wages (whatever % we are paying) is only until the end of the season...Austin's wage demands may have been lower, but it would have been for the length of the contract ie 3/4 years.
For example... and I think someone has posted similar before..
Bullard.... £25,000 x 15 Weeks(approx) = £375,000
Austin..... £12,000 x 156 weeks (3 years) £1,872,000
obviously these figures are totally random... but I am guessing this is why we can afford to pay Bullard higher wages... Not saying I agree.. I would have loved to seen Austin in a town shirt.
Up the town!

re Bullard - whether loan or permanent, IMO it is absurd to pay even £10K pw for an injury prone player. I suspect we are paying a lot more.

p.s. LowerNorth - with all due respect you miss a critical point - we get nothing for Bullard - i.e. he will return to Hull.Austin would have been an investment. An asset if you like. Your argument is a good one,but have to consider both sides.

I'd say Norris is worth about 1million, and delaney only worth around 500k so the offer isn't way below their actual worth, also consider that with their contracts out in the summer, it's likely that clubs would accept lower offers just to get some money for them. Saying all that i'm glad we've stood firm, one big mistake keane made was getting rid of players before we had signed replacements, and that's given us problems, best example being our right back position. We've kept hold of our best players and gained two exciting midfielders, the only way from here is up!

Thanks for the reply's fellas. I think it is a very sailient (spl) point , ie transger fee vs wages loanee vs full contract. It is no easy job I appreciate that fact.

But If Town are serious about getting promotion a balance has to be drawn between these variables. Austin would IMO have been a gamble , but one we should have been prepared to take. His wages over 3 yrs is higher than Bullards (dead money) deal, but if getting this young striker means we started banging in the goals , that eventually fire us to promotion (next season). the reported £90m reward for this would make his wages seem like small change , no ? Strikers are not cheap. But to get that promotion , we will at some point I think have to take that gamble, or be resigned to Championship football forever.
