Jewell: Draw Felt Like a Defeat Saturday, 12th Feb 2011 17:46
Boss Paul Jewell admitted that the Blues’ 1-1 draw at Barnsley felt like a defeat with the Tykes grabbing a late equaliser through Jacob Mellis after Jason Scotland had put Town in front.
Jewell said: “It feels like a defeat when you concede a goal so late and in the manner that it was conceded, with a deflection. It’s difficult to come out and be positive because you feel so sick.
“It wasn’t a great game in the first half, the pitch wasn’t conducive to getting the ball down and passing. It was always going to be a game where mistakes were going to be punished.
“I thought we had a few chances second half on the break and we defended really well, got great blocks in, Márton made a couple of saves and just when you think you’ve got three points, that happens. But that’s football.”
The Town manager was pleased to see striker Scotland making the headlines for scoring rather than because of his proposed loan move back to Swansea, on which front Jewell says there has been no further progress: “There’s nothing going on there as far as I’m concerned. They came back with an offer which wasn’t good enough and I’m quite happy to keep Jason here.”
Skipper David Norris was replaced after 15 minutes after suffering an injury and Jewell says the extent of the midfielder’s knock should be known on Sunday: “He’s twisted both his ankle and his knee, which is a bit of a blow, but these things happen in football and we’ll have to assess him in the morning.”
Tykes manager Mark Robins felt his team were under par: "it was lacklustre today and Ipswich came for a point and made it difficult for us.
"We had plenty of chances, more than Ipswich did, but I couldn't see either team scoring. We stood off them too much and looked like we hadn't played with each other for a while. The positive is we came back from a goal down and ground out a result.
"We got a decent goal at the end of it. I thought Jacob's shot was going to break the back of the net, he hit it that well.
"The pitch was very difficult and beat both teams. Too many of our players had quiet afternoons. I ended up throwing Jason Shackell forward and caused havoc and won some headers and thankfully Jacob has stuck it in the back of the net at the end.
"I think it would have been harsh on us to lose the game. They have broken away against us, had a decent shot, we didn't close him down well enough and the rebound goes into the empty net. It was disappointing, very disappointing, but we stuck at it and got an equaliser."

10 points from the last 5 games is a good return. Gutted to let in such a late goal but its not just us, I am sure that there are alot of Reading and Sheff Utd fans tonight feeling just as bad! No need to panic here though, we have scored in every game under PJ so far and lets face it, we are not going to make the play-offs and nor are we ready. Get secure then play with a bit more freedom. Look what PJ has done in 5 games. And we are getting points when really not at our best. He did a great interview on Sky which was showed this pm. Great to hear what he said and the players with smiles in training. It will take time but it will be worth it. COYB

With 15 or sominutes to go at 0-0 i was happy to take a point. Then after 90+mins I felt like we had lost! Iam sure this will be a good lesson to learn and I am sure PJ will use this as an example for the inexperienced. Still plenty of work to do but 10 out of 12 is streets ahead of where we were 2 months ago. I would like to see Luca figure a bit more but I am sure PJ is taking his time assessing his squad. Bring on Donny. COYB

roytheboy - it's not about secrets, or tightening up, it's about CONCENTRATION and COMMON SENSE play in both instances you mention. Conceding with seconds left should NEVER happen if both the above are installed where they should be.

Jewell, no need to say it felt like a defeat, was a good game to be honest.. wasn't expecting to come back with any points, 1 point is better than none and will make a difference, 3 league games in a row and not a defeat in four is good! better than anything keane did for us! Good result, but truly dreadful defending which led to their goal. Our aim now this season anyway is to avoid relegation and regroup for next year. I am keeping a careful eye on Norwich,- hopeful that they will end up in 3rd and lose in the play-offs.... Coming 7th would be even better, but they seem to be playing some good football at the moment. The derby match when it comes could prove crucial to their promotion charge. Lets hope we save our last minute winner for that match.....

Come on folks - there's too much doom and gloom on here, and after failing to win, daggers are being drawn by some people already. Yes, it's particularly annoying to concede so late, but let's get this whole situation into perspective - we've come light years already since the dark days of Keane. We still have light years to go, but it's all in the right direction.

coming from behind or shooting from the front we cant be pulled back now' i think we have good penetration and are definitely rising to the occasion as long as we stay hard and keep thrusting forward at every opportunity we will cream the opposition

As I said before, with the new service to the front, stick Scotland on and see if he rises to the occasion. Well he did, and I for one am not going to complain about gaining another point toward survival this year. This is how far we've come already, people are angry about ONLY getting a point. A month ago we'dve ripped someone's arm off for a point ! I do understand your frustration, but how many of us would have taken that point before the game ? Big grins please - COYB !

This was just the second game I had seen this season - The last one being Keanes last game in charge. It wasn't a great game and neither team played well, the pitch really didn't help. Martin I thought shows real promise, great attacking intent but at times needs to learn when to be less selfish. At one point Leadbitter was free in the box and could easily have scored but Martin chose to shoot form an impossible angle. These things will come with experience and the more we play him the better he will become. Martin Fulop was outstanding and kept us in the game with some outstanding saves, so yes whilst we should have held on for the last few minutes without Marton in goal we could have been a few down as well. Carlos Edwrads who is often slated by you lot also seems to be really developing into a right back and was our best player on the day, with the standard of his football and his commitment and energy. I was a little disappointed with Bullard, after reading all you have had to say about him I was expecting a lot. He had a distinctly average game although i was impressed with the way the ball seems to stick to him at times when he has a few opposition players around him. Maybe on a better pitch i would have seen a better Bullard but he should be experienced enough to deal with a bad pitch. Overall i was pleased and am hopeful for the future, considering it is 7 years since we last won 4 games in a row, then three in a row and a draw isn't too bad considering where we were last month.

yes Jas when we were in play off positions. Was trying to point out to those dooom and gloom mongers (H32 in particular who i am convinced must be a perfectionist and never get anything wrong himself reading his match report posts) that actually we are doing ok. Frustrating to give a goal away in such a manner but those who thought that Jewell would turn a very poor bottom of the table on form team into a brilliant play off team over night were deluded. What he has done is to stop the rot, give us every chance of staying up (there really is only one space going in the relegation zone now, other two are as good as gone)... then he can build for next season. Same reason he was right not to go mad in the January transfer window when clubs hold people to ransom knowing they are either desperate to stay up or stop going down and so put inflated prices on players heads (Carol and Torres only go to prove how crazy this window is). So lets just say well done for going on a four game unbeaten run, only really need 4 wins (12 points) to totally guarantee safety) then next season will be about turning a now average team into a play off pushing team. so its not about accepting second best H32 its about being real.....

bluelady - you consitantly get your opinions wrong - I am NOT a doom and gloom monger but I DO WANT SUCCESS FOR THIS CLUB and I am a realist who speaks it as it is. I see nothing thro' blue tinted glasses, unlike some (very much including yourself), - you make it so blatantly obvious that you are satisfied whatever, and will even seek solace from defeat. See it as it is, if not, you're only kidding yourself. I've said many times that ITFC have more than their fair share of supporters who would be more than satisfied so long as a football is kicked at Portman Road - and this IS very much about accepting second best. I AM PROUD NOT TO BE ONE OF THESE - I WANT NOTHING BUT SUCCESS FOR OUR CLUB ON ALL FRONTS. I have not said PJ is doing anything other than OK thus far and am not criticising the man at all - but we are blatantly STILL in dire need of a full back and striker and to date under PJ still no progress on that front - therefore I will state so. I am not a perfectionist - but I strive for it in all I do - what's wrong with that ?? We cannot all be satisfied losers - and I would not want to be - EVER.

H32 I do not wear blue tinted glasses as I said am just realistic. Desperate for full back yet in manys opinion Edwards man of match yesterday. Rome was not built in a day and it will take time for jewell to build a squad to his liking and one fit to fight for the top fligjt. after keanes mess its a long journey we have embarked and thus far looking ok. We will not turn into world beaters over night and panic buying in Jan when prices are inflated is not the answer. No accepting mid table finish this season then moving on and up with better manger some decent summer signings and a smile around the place is my very realistic goal, what did you expect him to do in five months win the league? We played a team or embarrassed us not long ago yesterday and almost stole three points that shows progress surely?

Garv just saw it again, Martin bit unlucky a bad bounce and he is knee high to an ant! But it went past a few players on way to goal and a foot out would have stopped it surely. shouldn't have been in our own half anyway with a minute to go, still onwards we go much better that that shameful performance at portman road when I left not knowing whether to just laugh or kick the cat!!! I fortunately did neither just sulked for days!

Just returned from Barnsley and what a pleasure it was again to speak to the Barnsley fans who are so friendly and seem genuinely nice people. I too came away from the game totally gutted. I thought Barnsleys display was one of the poorest I have seen from a Championship side this season which was the complete opposite of their performance at Portman Road. I also thought that once again the Referee was totally abysmal and indirectly cost us maxuimum points. When Wickham held the ball up in the corner in the dying minute there was no way he infringed any laws of the game. It seemed the Referee did not like our time wasting tactics so blew for the free kick. As a result Barnsley were given possession and subsequently went up the other end and scored. For that reason I am more than gutted that we robbed of the points. On the whole we did not play well in the first half with the clearances of McAuley and Delaney out of defence being hoofs up the field instead of finding a team mate with a pass. This has to be rectified - GC and DD are great stoppers but certainly not footballers. The midfield worked tirelessly and put in some great tackles and Martin continues to impress but when one up should have squared to Scotland which would have wrapped up the points. Wickham went on another super run but his finishing let him down on this occasion but again that would have wrapped up the points. Scotlands finish was clinical and much as I like Priskins effort he would probably have skyed the chance hence the reason Scotland could still be of use to us if played in the right position. I still feel there is a lot to be done by PJ and I am sure he will do that but it may take time before we are a force again. Ten points from 5 games is a good start though.

Well done to those singing, probably about 20 of us trying to get behind the lads. What is wrong with some of our supporters, just sit and wait for something to happen. Stand up and support your team..... I wanna go home, Barnsley is a sh*t whole, i wanna go home. Classic :-)
