Beye Set to Sign Today Wednesday, 16th Feb 2011 11:10
Aston Villa right-back Habib Beye will join the Blues on loan today, according to reports in Birmingham. The 33-year-old will move to Portman Road for an initial month with a view to remaining with Town for the rest of the season.
Reports of Paul Jewell’s interest in the French-born Senegalese international first surfaced yesterday, although the Blues boss wouldn’t be drawn on Beye when asked about him after last night’s 6-0 hammering of Doncaster.
The full-back or central defender has made only 14 starts and two sub appearances since he joined Villa from Newcastle in the summer of 2009, last featuring in the Carling Cup in October. Recently he has been training with the reserves and has had his commitment to the cause questioned by manager Gerard Houllier.
Beye’s first English club was Newcastle United, who paid Marseille £2 million for the six-foot tall defender in August 2007. Prior to that he was with Paris St Germain and Strasbourg.
On Monday, Jewell revealed that he was hoping to bring in “one or two” loan players before the end of the week with a right-back a not unlikely target with Carlos Edwards currently playing in what is an unfamiliar role.
Villa are understood to have negotiated a 24-hour recall on Beye during his initial month in case they require him to cover further injuries to defenders.
Meanwhile, the Blues are one of a number of clubs understood to be monitoring Chesterfield striker Craig Davies. The 25-year-old has scored 16 goals this season, having joined the Spireites from Brighton in the summer.
The much-travelled Welsh international started his career with Manchester City and has subsequently played for Oxford United, Hellas Verona in Italy, Wolves (loan), Oldham, Stockport (loan), Brighton, Yeovil (loan) and Port Vale (loan).

What a signing this will be, as and when he does actually sign. Credit to Edwards who has done well at right back, but could this see signing see the change of formation? With Edwards pushing up to right midfield, with Wickham partnering Priskin or Scotland up top?
I was speaking to my old friend Roy yesterday and he says this lad will make a good 4th goalkeeper or 9th midfielder. But he was kicking on at the time.
Surely he must have played for Sunderland at least once... Oh wait, that's right our new manager utilises scouts to identify quality available talent. I almost forgot where I was for a second there.
If he does sign which would be brilliant, then Edwards can go to right wing and with chuck out injured and bullard ineligible on sat, then poss 4-4-2 with edwards and martin on the wings with leadbitter and healy/hyam in midfield.
Although it goes without saying He has ability, I'm a bit worried about the skysport interveiw, would he join us just worrying about his wage packet and not the cause or does he just want to get away from Villa because he is not playing ?
My friend who's a newcastle season ticket holder said Beye was a contender for player of the season the last season he was there and reckons he'd be a quality signing for us.
Also, i can't have ben the only person on here to have a Bo Selecta moment when reading about the chesterfield striker!
We seem to now potentially have a whole host of pretty good wide midfielders - edwards, peters, Martin, civelli, o Connor - plus PJ has been playing Norris and wickham there. Seriously spoilt for choice. I must say, I do feel a bit sorry for peters and oconnor, who've barely featured so far, but if we 're winning then it's just tough
