Liverpool Now Reportedly Main Contenders for Wickham
Liverpool Now Reportedly Main Contenders for Wickham
Sunday, 10th Apr 2011 09:37

Liverpool are this week’s main contenders to sign Town striker Connor Wickham in the summer, according to today’s tabloids. Tottenham had previously been reported to be the frontrunners but manager Harry Redknapp has recently played down his interest in the £10 million-rated frontman.

Like the rest of the Premier League’s bigger clubs, the Reds have been mentioned in connection with Wickham on plenty of occasions with their director of football strategy Damien Comolli spotted at Town’s 1-1 home draw with Hull City in February.

The 18-year-old, who extended his Town contract until 2014 earlier this week, supported the Merseysiders as a child.

On Friday, Blues boss Paul Jewell was realistic about the prospects of keeping Wickham if a big offer came in, but said the club currently aren't looking to cash in and that he didn't think that the player was yet interested in moving on: “Every player has a price, but I’m not looking to sell Connor Wickham and I don’t think Connor Wickham’s looking to leave.

“If someone came in with a silly offer and he wanted to go, we’d have to listen to it. But that would be the same for any player. “

Elsewhere, Town, Burnley and Reading are again all reported to be chasing Tottenham right-back Adam Smith, as first revealed by TWTD last month. The 19-year-old has impressed while on loan at Bournemouth this season.

I agree with others, if we got a serious offer of £5-8m with an agreement on a sell-on clause I'd take it, £10m i'd bite their hand off, don't get me wrong I'd love him to stay, but remember there is a release clause in Wickhams new contract, so if the club receive an offer of equal or better they will have to accept it anyway.

Glad it's not just me then! Don't get me wrong, I'd love us to get silly money for him and us use that to build a promotion challenging squad.

Here's hoping I am wrong!

dream on, we all know that town would bite the hands off the first team to put TEN million on the table

We are now in a position to rebuff any offer under £20,000,000 as he has signed an extension to his contract, but however, any fee "above" that would be hard to resist.

this time last year andy carroll had only scored a few goals in the championship, so liverpool have a 'record' of spending twice as much as necessary on a big lump up front - but why would they want another one?

Maybe wickham isn't worth £10-20 million NOW, like people have been saying, but think about how much he'd be worth if he started playing PL matches and scoring regularly - £30-40 million? more?

THAT is why there's talk of Wickham going for £10-20 million, because some clubs simply can risk that amount of money if it means they're likely to get much more for their investment in the long run.

What ever you think he's worth, I believe Josh Carson at 17 is an all round better prospect than Connor. No, I'm not knocking him and yes I'd prefer him to stay, but at the moment everybody seems to think he's Roy of the Rovers - no, he has the ' potential ', whereas in a few short games Carson has served ability up on a plate for all to see.IMHO

Diamond Geezer I agree From what I have seen Carson has lot more in his locker than Connor If someone bid Fifteen with loan back and good sell on plus England caps and goals then we have a deal

"Not worth that much"
"Average player"
Etc etc etc.... Clueless!!!

He is worth what someone is willing to pay. If its 20mil he's worth it, to them. Realisticly its more like 11 or 12mil.

blue_em_away - I think you may find that indeed it is YOU who is clueless !

If he is such a prospect and worth that sort of money, why haven't one of the big clubs snapped him up (and to cover your likely counter arguement that its because he isnt quite ready) and loaned him back to us ?

Surely if he was that great and that much of a prospect it would be mad that one of these bigger clubs haven't acted accordingly ?

Wake up !
