Town Linked With Mackail-Smith Bid
Town Linked With Mackail-Smith Bid
Wednesday, 27th Apr 2011 08:57

Town’s continued monitoring of Peterborough striker Craig Mackail-Smith has led to a number of this morning’s newspapers linking the Blues with a £2 million summer move for the 27-year-old. On Friday, TWTD reported that chief scout Steve McCall was at Posh’s 2-1 defeat at Leyton Orient, while manager Paul Jewell has also watched the Scotland international frontman in action.

The one-time St Albans Town, Arlesey Town and Dagenham and Redbridge striker was close to joining Norwich in March and looks certain to leave London Road in the summer having rejected a new contract. The 5ft 8in tall goal-getter’s current terms are up in the summer of 2012.

Watford-born Mackail-Smith has scored 31 goals this season, earning his first and so far only international cap for the country of his grandmother’s birth in a 2-0 defeat to Brazil in March. Previously he had played for England C, the non-league national side.

Town and the Canaries are unlikely to be the only clubs interested in the man who was recently named this season's League One Player of the Year.

As much as I'd love to see the guy at Portman Road, am I the only one slightly concerned about his past record? He hasn't played at a decent level all his career and he's 27 now?

I'm sure he'd be a great signing though

That Jordan Rhodes at Huddersfield looks even better now, we should sign him, oh hang on

Watched him come on late against Yeovil and turned the game around, plays at a much higher pace than everyone else on the field with the exception of Boyd who came on with him.

Busy player and was a real nuisance to the back four and had the Yeovil keeper (decent too) in knots. Capped it off with a real poachers goal. Quite liked the young lad (David Ball) who he came on to replace, played the same way but just not quite so effective - was in the face of the defenders the whole day and was unlucky not to get a clear shot on goal.

We need to tie players up early... and not be in the situation of last year and do panic buys, such as pie boy. he would be a great addition to our squad, i think he could easily step up to the championship, by all reports he is head and shoulders above his peirs.

I love being linked with these players, rather than some 32 year old who cant get a game for some average premier league side.

Let the rebuilding start COYB!

Sign him up - or someone similar. We need players who are hungry to improve and play at a higher level rather than old-timers who are just looking for their next pay packet. I believe PJ can find us some real gems....

I wish people would put the Rhodes issue to bed. He wanted to leave Ipswich Town aided and abetted by his father. On Makail-Smith I would rather have Billy Sharp who has proved he can score goals at this level.

Does he know what goal posts look like, and that the net is there to catch the ball if it goes between them? If so, get him quick!

I can see CMS heading for the Prem with the likes of Norwich or QPR, I think PJ has his work cut out to attract some real quality down here but hopefully we can get Bullard which would be a real statement of intent.

Was in Berlin at the weekend and took in FC Union Berlin and would highly recommend young German Christopher Quiring, winger / striker only 20 and has the most unbelievable pace and touch. Their support also puts all English football to shame, non stop singing & chanting to support their team even when the opposition scored.

I would love this to happen but still would like us to go for davis aswell.

I don't think being 27 is a problem, don't like to mention his name but Grant Holt has only just come good at this level and he's 30

If we did sign CMS I'd still like us to go in for Billy Sharp. Them two in attack, plus Wickham and Murray in reserve sounds pretty good to me.

I think that Billy Sharp would be a much better option and that Jewell should also sign Ricky Lambert from Southampton. Sharp proved against us how clinical and what a nuisance he is. Lambert I'm sure could make the step up and has scored 20 goals a season in league one for many years. I hear that Wolves are prepared to let Andy Keogh go in the summer, he can play up front or on the wing and had an excellent understanding with Sharp at Scunny, worth a look surely.

No idea where that rumour came from, Rhodes desperately wanted to stay and was practically pushed out of the door.

Well done phil, so keane flogged Rhodes cheap then spent loads on priskin then Scotland for the goals, terrible management, I like to think that wouldn't happen now with pj in charge !

Its great to see us linked with good players and i am addicted to my TWTD login 5 or 6 times a day for news but a part of me now thinks anyone we are linked with either goes somewhere else or its just a marketing ploy in the first place.
Don't want to feel this way but seen it all too often

We need at least 2 stikers as most successful teams hunt in pairs, unless you subscribe to 1 up front, which I personally detest especially at home.
I must add that this can be effective on the odd occasion.
Therefore I would like to see Mackail-Smith and Billy Sharp at least and gel them with Wickham if still here, maybe Wickham will be sacrificed to pay for the players we need.
Whatever happens I am not happy we keep harping on about our history,it is time to create more history now.

Phil TWTD - it could be construed as a rumour but I have family contacts at Huddersfield Town Football Club but had better not say anymore.

Is that to be translated as... "My second cousin, twice removed, sells pies in Huddersfield at half-time?"

Phil TWTD story ties in with what I heard too. Rhodes was happy at Town and a certain Roy Keane felt surplus to requirements. Wouldn't have minded if he had given him a chance, half a season even but to get rid of early, still muddy old waters!
I don't think Town should be too proud to go back and get Rhodes if he is the right man as RK is gone and the PJ era is here now.
I think a lot of names will be associated with top scoring strikers from Championship and lower divisions including Town who have made it obvious they need at least 2 strikers.

devontractorboy added 11:22 - Apr 27
Be real Rhodes is hardly likely to go to Huddersfield moaning that he wanted to stay at Town is he!! Although one of the most annoying things Keane did it is history now and I'm sure PJ is watching a number of potential targets....but you'll just have to wait until or if someone signs.

Roll on next season and a fresh start, just hope the Budgies are still in the Championship so we can quickly avenge those ohhhhhhhh so embarrassing results!!!

I actually also happen to know that Rhodes didn't want to leave, and indeed hated his first few months up north.

Will Peterboro let CMS go for £2m? If so, I'd have him. There is a great opportunity to build a link with Peterboro - send them one or two of our youngsters, pick up one or two of their good players...
