Nugent and Chopra Linked Again
Nugent and Chopra Linked Again
Tuesday, 24th May 2011 00:16

Town are once again being linked with a summer move for out-of-contract Portsmouth striker David Nugent. The Blues are also said to be keeping an eye on Cardiff frontman and long-time Roy Keane target Michael Chopra, while Doncaster are claimed to have put a £4 million price on striker Billy Sharp and midfielder James Coppinger.

Nugent, who has scored eight goals in eight games against the Blues and has netted in every match he has played at Portman Road, was a regular loan target of former boss Jim Magilton and was reported to be on Paul Jewell’s summer wish-list towards the end of last month.

Former Bury and Preston man Nugent, who was capped once by England, scored 14 goals during 2010/11.

The 25-year-old, who looks certain to be leaving Pompey during the close season, has also been mentioned in connection with QPR, Blackpool and Bolton.

Chopra was one of ex-Town boss Keane’s main targets last season but the club weren’t prepared to pay the Bluebirds' asking price.

The 27-year-old former Sunderland and Newcastle frontman, who is contracted to Cardiff until 2012, scored 11 goals in 28 starts and 11 sub appearances during 2010/11 despite suffering one or two injuries.

Meanwhile, Doncaster want £4 million for Town targets Billy Sharp and James Coppinger, according to one tabloid report. The Blues' £2.6 million offer for the duo was turned down just over a week ago.

Elsewhere, Leicester are reported to have made a £1 million offer for Sheffield United striker Ched Evans, who was also recently linked with Town.

Is it not worth sending our top scout to the U21 championship?

Why pay good money on players we already know don't really want to be here next season as they have shown in the past.

I would go watch some of the games and pick up a couple of bargins from abroad, they will probabley cost little and these guy's are just starting there pro careers so will be chomping at the bit..

Thats just my opinion though,

We have to be linked with Nugent - and now Chopra as well - every summer. It's in the Football League rules.

Am I the only person that wouldn't like to see Nugent here? I think he has an awful attitude, he's a mercenary and IMO would never really "want" to play for a club.

He should be in his prime now but he's not all that prolific. A great finisher yes, but not often enough for me.

Doncaster are having a laugh but they're only protecting their assests. If we want to prise the core players away from our rivals we're going to have to spend big. We'd only do the same.

Its all paper talk and the club just want to sell ST, we won't be signing any of them, the club are complacent and unwilling to spend the sort of money required, the income is down and so are wages and expectations, 13K sold, what a load of old tosh, lucky if they sold 10K, just what is wrong with this club, it has to be the leadership, or lack of it.

We need to take a punt on a lower league player,i.e.ADAM LE FONDRE 1 year left on contract 300k would do it ,not a
gamle as the boy can score

Doncaster want £4m!!?

Forget that one PJ and use the money to get Nugent & Chopra...both potentially brilliant but both potential trouble makers...it could get interesting.

Mickmillstash, you mention some success stories there, but for every David Jonson there is a Jason Scotland, for every Jon Walters there is a lee Martin, we need some proven quality in, as well as unearthing gems from lower divisions.

Doncaster are effectively saying Sharp is available for £3m. We offered £2.3m and Wolves were linked with a bid of £2.5m but that was before their Premier League status was assured. If we offer £2.6m we'll probably get him.

I don't think we will get these two but nugent is free so no harm in offering a contract, chopra is a harder one as dave jones is front runner for the westham job and may want to take his better players with him. 4m for sharp and coppinger is alittle high but they are there best players 3.25 for sharp and 750k for coppinger isn't asking lots for two good players and when you think of wages as well they would both be on lower wages than nugent and chopra so would be a better bet.

I'm pretty confident that we'll get Sharp and Coppinger, a bid of around £3.20m should do it. Other players being linked helps our bargaining position with Doncaster.

Nugent isnt a fox in the box type of player does not get in there, were it hurts, I think signing Mr Sharp is a much better option.

How about Glenn Murray who was the 2nd top goalscorer last season in League 1, he is on a FREE! He has left as he couldnt agree terms wouldnt this be a good signing without disrupting the wage bill?? Or any of the crewe frontmen as they have banged a lot of goals between them, cheaper signings who could bang the goals in! Then get Bullard in. Am i dreaming??? hmmm maybe

I think Connor Wickham is quality and good potential. However if silly money is being offered if does make you wonder what we can get with the dough. One player = 4 or 5

I still really rate Sharp, just because I think he'd suit playing with Wickham. That's why i'd really like to see him at the club.

If we don't get Bullard (which is likely) then Coppinger would be the perfect replacement.

Nugent i'd like, he's got quality, perhaps not the right attitude (but who knows what a new manager can do) and in any case, it'd be great booing your own player when he scores! (Nugent would probably love it!)

please please please sign both of these up!!! we really need to make some signings asap! im never going to moan about speculation but it would be great if we could get some signings completed sooner rather than later

Lee Martin and Jason Scotland were premier league players when we signed them and since have turned into Div1 players. Grant Leadbitter, Carlos Edwards, Martin Fulop - are 'proven quality'
What we need are hungry players who have something to prove, want to taste the big time, are ambitiuos, and are prepared to work for it and are led by a good manager- E.G Ipswich Town 1999/2000 Norwich City 2010/201.
You can sign all the proven quality you want but look how far it took West Ham and Birmingham this year.
Top Scorers Championship 2010/11
Graham 24
Holt 21
Long 21
Becchio 19
Sinclair 19
of the top 15 strikers I would only describe Helguson 13 and Bothroyd 18 as anything close to proven.

On a personal level I would not want to see David Nugent at the club. On a club level, he would be a great person to have in the team.

Nugent is a complete bell end and Chopra would probably come but we wouldnt be able to afford or pay his 20k+ a week wages!
Go to the lower leagues or break the bank for Billy Sharp..........Simples

Having been given free pompey tickets quite a few times this season, I for one wouldn't mind nugent coming here. He was always pompeys most dangerous threat (I realise that's not saying much as they are sh1te), the problem is I can see him going to the yellow scum just to p1ss us of even more as he does seem to hate us!

bluemin_nora added 12:35 - May 24
How about Bert and Ernie from Sesame Street United? I reckon they're good for 20 each a season.

May aswell throw some more realistic names in the pot.

No, no, no, no, no. These are two of the biggest bullets we have dodged the last few years. To think we were willing to pay £3m+ for Chopra last summer–and he scored eleven goals and was out injured most of the time. And Nugent? Please. I would rather see us start the season with Wickham and Murray up front than to pay money for either of these two.

These two represent the same old failing recruitment strategy. Established championship players and premiership cast-offs come overpriced and under-motivated. Academy and lower-leagues should be our main source of players.
