Sunderland Enter Westwood Race
Sunderland Enter Westwood Race
Wednesday, 25th May 2011 08:57

Town’s chances of signing out-of-contract Coventry keeper Keiren Westwood appear increasingly slim with Sunderland reported to have joined the race for the Irish international’s signature.

The Blues already faced reported competition from Everton, Leicester City and Celtic, and Steve Bruce is now said to have begun talks with the 26-year-old. Current Black Cats keeper Craig Gordon has undergone knee surgery and is out for the first three months of the season.

Aston Villa are also now claimed to be eyeing the former Carlisle man, who seems certain to be leaving the Ricoh Arena this summer.

Elsewhere, former Blues loanee Giovani Dos Santos has said he wants to stay with his current loan club Racing Santander. Spurs are happy to allow the Mexican international to leave but the La Liga side might struggle to pay the £6 million fee agreed as part of the terms of his loan.

I think we had/have a chance, in the same way as Leicester appear to feel they have (although with greater resources than us), as not many Premier League sides can offer him regular first team football, which is apparently what he wants to establish himself in the Ireland set-up. Not much point in him moving somewhere and not playing at this point in his career.

If Sunderland or Everton or whoever can offer him what he wants, then he'll probably be in the Premier League, if not then I reckon he'll stay in the Championship.

Still think all these link are to generate intrest for season ticket sales.

surely the club would have been talking to Hull about Bullard and know what Hull want for Bullard. If its out of our range then we move on or pay the asking price and sign him up, Not wait for other teams to come in for him.

As for Sharpe and Corringer ask what the price for the pair and if the club feel its too much move on.
Will be a long season again next year and again mid table, 3 very big side coming down plus the 3 from last year, Leicester will have money to burn, then there is Forrest,Cardiff plus Swansea/Reading and Brighton and Southampton will be no push over either.
The club need to push for these player quickly so they have time to settle

Don't be such a pesimist dude. It will all come together I'm sure by the end of the summer.

Players and managers take holidays at this time of year so nothing much will get done anytime soon. The only thing that is certain is agents making many stiring phone calls and statements throwing the ground bait down for the future bites.

As for trying to create interest for season tickets - I don't think the club beleive we are that stupid. Only signings will increase sales of season tickets.

Phil

Good work. Keep posting the players we are linked with - I for one will always read and give my opinion, if I have one.... and my thunder has not been stolen.

Yes Phil does a great Job and the EADT could learn something about reproting if they observed the way Phil runs the show. Dave Gooderman and Carl marsden are o.k. but I am convinced that Elwin King gets all his info from the local pub and Derek davies was always scathing about the TWTD website because he said they stole stories but never credited the writers of them. Strangely, he left under a bit of a cloud and perhaps he was just jelous anyway. Who knows?

If there's a mere possibility that one of these links could happen, then I for one am glad to read 'em. Keep 'em coming Phil.

Shaping up to be just like last year isn't it? The good players are picked up by the big clubs and we are left to get whoever nobody else wants.

We cannot blame neither PJ nor Clegg for being beaten by PM clubs for our tatgets. But we can blame them if a player is keen to join us and we come short in the offer department. Like we did with Sharp and Coppinger. And this is just an example - I don't even value Sharp that much. But when we have somebody in mind we should come with our best offer not starting with less and then try to do an increased offer - this is not a condo search so that you go back and forth with offers until you join in the middle. When you undervalue a player the other club just don't consider you as a serious buyer... Other things we should do is follow the players out of contract like Nugent - go and get him right now with a good wages pack so that he comes right away and not say: "mm let me see my other options" because in such case there will always be somebody coming with a better offer and we are out again. I just don't want PJ to repeat Jim and Keane with statements that we are in content with lots of "Irons in the fire" in May and at the close transfer season say: "It is tough to ensure a signature from a decent player". Last summer QPR did great on the market and they got promoted just like that. We could have Derry first but we came short again. This is not gonna lead us anywhere. We just have to rethink our buying strategy - the old one doesn't work...

Until there is a press conference at Portman Road we have to accept that this is all pure speculation and rumour designed to increase usage of web sites and to sell papers. It would help if a more accurate source was quoted in every article.

Kieren Westwood, Jlloyd Samuel, Danny Shittu, Claude Davis, Pascal Chimbonda, Wade Elliott, Gavin Rae, Lee Bowyer, Bradley Johnson, Robert Earnshaw, Nathan Ellington, Richard Garcia, Michael Brown, Lee Carsley, Michael McIndoe, Craig Fagan, David Nugent, Nathan Tyson, Giles Barnes, Chris Burke, Neil Danns. all just a few players available on a free as per the eveningstar. I would have a few of these in our team. Id go for Chris Burke, Lee Bowyer and Rob 'Alien' Earnshaw for definate.

Running a website is not rocket science. All you do is trawl other websites and grab stories and paste them onto your own site while changing the wording around. Then the rest of us comment on it. No sweat.

Ipswich will struggle to sign any good players which is why Mc Cauley/Norris will be big losses and difficult to replace, ipswich have struggled for years now, since Magilton in fact, to sign good players, the transfer market is a nightmare and players out for best deal. you have to sign players from lower leagues and hope u get lucky like norwich did with Grant Holt.

At Sunderland he will be No.3 keeper (no.2 while Gordon is injured), so if he wants first team football as he has said, he's not going to go to Sunderland.

He will go there however if what he actually wants is the most money, not first team football. It will be a simple choice and Bruce has said he would be back up to Mignolet.

Face it we wont sign any quality. We are not a big fish anymore. Forest, Leeds, Swansea, Cardiff, Boro, Burnley, Reading, West Ham, Birmingham, Blackpool, Southampton, Derby are all better clubs than us at the moment. Players will choose these clubs before ours any day of the week, as these clubs are prepared to pay the wages and transfer fees that are needed to be a force in the championship!
Our club will not pay the going rate and that is why we will end up with nobody special. Bullard wont come here as we wont pay the going wages for him.
We need to face the facts instead of living in the past every five minutes!
We are not a big player anymore.
Since Joe Royle left the club we have been going downhill each season.
For those of you who think we will finish in the top two or top six next season need to have a word with yourselves.
We are miles and miles away from that im afraid!!
Im blue through and through but im also a realist!!

Legend - I agree with most of the stuff you say (except Cardiff will not be any good next year when everybody leave them based on the financial situation they are in). But look at QPR - they didn't get "great" players last summer. Instead they got the right ones and they got promoted. So why shouldn't we do the same? We have financial support (yeah ME is not Abramovich but still...) and we can get the right players during this summer and become a top 6ers. This should not be unachievable dream for us. Even though I am not so happy having PJ as a manager and I know how difficult will be to get the right players it is NOT IMPOSSIBLE and PJ should be doing something about it. Compared to you I am always on the more optimistic site but you need some optimistic thinking to help you achieve what you want...
