Liverpool Make Wickham Bid
Liverpool Make Wickham Bid
Friday, 3rd Jun 2011 23:28

Liverpool have made Town an £8 million offer for striker Connor Wickham, according to a number of national newspapers. The Reds have long been linked with the 18-year-old with their director of football strategy Damien Comolli at the Hull City match in February.

If the reports prove to be true, it’s unlikely a bid of that size would be enough to tempt the Blues and at least one paper claims the offer has already been turned down. A figure of between £10 million and £15 million is understood to be Town’s asking price with Wickham’s recently signed contract until 2014 believed to include a clause which would allow him to speak to a club if they make the Blues an offer at this pre-set level.

The Merseysiders, who Wickham supported as a boy, were also linked with the Hereford-born frontman earlier today, while Tottenham are long-term admirers.

If Town do sell Wickham this summer, they would probably prefer to do so after the UEFA European U21 Championship in Denmark later this month where, with all the Premier League big guns keeping a close eye on his progress, his value could increase.

After facing Norway in a warm-up game at Southampton on Sunday (ESPN/ESPN HD 2.30pm), Stuart Pearce’s side will take on Spain on June 12th, Ukraine on June 15th and the Czech Republic on June 19th in the group stages.

if we sell him chances are he will be loaned back next season to us-the way football is going all championships best players get sold sooner rather than later to the prem bigboys-thats just the way football is going and the longer we are in this league the worse it gets, think back to bent, dyer, ambrose wright bramble etc,all sold on when interest levels get high via media/performances, would anybody be surprised if we cashed in!! plus if its the team he actually supports then im sure he would love to go there, although i dont think hes ready for the step up yet.i believe we will get players in but nothing is really moving yet, hopefully we can buy on the continent rather than pay big money for average championship players!! all the top championship players like long, graham etc will be sold on,THATS JUST THE WAY IT IS!

Didn't Spurs offer more money with the option of loaning him back to us for a season or two, that seems to be the most obvious and beneficial for our club with money in the bank but our player back. If Liverpool dont offer that and he goes we need 10m at least but I dont blame him for going but tbh he would be behind Carroll and Suarez and wont start a game, he would be a bit of a benchwarmer. Carroll and Wickham up from would be a frontline to be scared of not just football but for pure size of them and Carroll's hair.

If it's 8 million, then I would want to see him back here on a season long loan!

Either 10 million or higher, i would say don't worry about him and find someone new!

Let the bidding begin...10-12-15 million it's not going to make much odds. The money would be great and I'm sure that Clegg will do the usual and tell us that the money is available to strengthen the team, only problem is we can't attract anyone decent without paying the correct wages, and that ain't gunna happen. ME is a business man and although he did save the club from oblivion for which all of us are grateful the money will always come first.
If CW does go for good money that will help reduce the debt to ME, can't really see it helping the team out. As i've said before PJ is top drawer, SC couldn't manage to sign a book in Waterstones.........

It's been said before and I'll say it again. Big money does not have to be spent on either transfer fees or wages. That lot up the road proved it last year. There are good players out there either in lower divisions. The question is do we have the manager and the scouting staff to find those players? Don't know the answer to that one.

We may have the staff and manager to spot the talent BUT WILL THEY COME ???
Up to this time the prospects for new talent of any worth are strictly NIL !!! We are no longer a club to draw the better players !

Bite their hands off : £8m is way more than he is worth and we can buy a whole new squad with that money. May be worth trying to push them up to £10m first though. Whether he goes or stays, in 2 years' time people wil be saying "Connor who? Whatever happened to him ..." Darren Bent he isn't.

meekreech. Scummers are hardly a fashionable club, are they? yet they got in the right players.
I mean i cant even see how any self respecting person would go out in public in yellow and green... yuk, yet they got got some half decent players in.
Would all the negative people on here, just wait until there is some news to be negative about, at the moment its all hear say and opinions.
The facts are this, we are building a virtually new team and we are all agreed on this, it needs it, only quality we had and lost was bullard, and he werent even ours.We only lost a couple of reasonable championship players, thats all.
Get over it everyone, lets take our once great club forward. I remember a quote from Joe Royle, when asked how he thought his team would fare in the coming season(no money or players in). He said" i cant wait'. Lets all be positive. COYB

Just because someone's made an offer doesn't mean we have to accept...personally I hope we can keep him & add 4 or 5 others.

Tbh,with a month gone since the season finished ,thought we would've brought in 2 or 3 by now but not many other clubs are doing much business either.

I'm sure this time next month we'll have 3 or 4 players in and we'll be wondering what all the panic was about.

Just hope we don't give Connor away on the cheap like we did with Bent.

Appears we are heading towards getting a good deal....just think ultimately he is just a prospect at this point, has not proven anything and one freak injury and he is worth nothing and we have no money or player to cover. Get a bid of aorund 12m I am letting him go.

all i can say is if he leaves the club to will ruin his career as he will be on theb ench or not even in the line up for around two seasons then that is when he will wish he would of never left ipswich

he is going to be dangerious next season and will become more of a problem for the oppisition next season the more experince he gets.
all i can say is please stay isnt that the reason you sign a new contract

Id take 10 million ,hasnt progressed last season ,granted had a few injuries but looking more and more like turning into a Dean Bowditch and not an international superstar he was billed to be,his value will go down after this next season.

im not in 2 slagging people off, every1s entitled to an opinion, but jas0999, krlosfandangel, & 1 or 2 others who never come on herew but 2 post something negative, why dont you just go away. if you cant support the club, regardless of who's playing for us or isnt then just find someone else to supprt, & go be negative about them. this isnt me just being ultra positive, if by end of july we got no signings i'm sure i'll be joining you in being pessimistic about next season, but until then, give the club a chance to get on with the rebuilding. if that means selling wickham, then so be it. i honestly believe if we signed lionel messi youd still be moaning, so give it a rest till theres something to be negative about

Marcus Evans has already said he will fund Paul Jewell, but it seems we can't get players to come here whether that be due to wages, perceived ambition of the club, geography, or whatever. When added to the failure to hold onto McAuley and Norris, the failure to sign Austin and maybe the player Jewell met a couple of weeks back, and it doesn't bode well. My point is that if we sell Wickham for £8M or £10M, will that make any difference to our ability to bring players in or will it disappear into the Evans' empire without making much impact on our player budgets?

8 million.............let him go!!!!!!!!!!

Only saw a few things of him this season & heard everything, great if he is a prospect but in my opinion he ain't prolific!

Good luck to him if he proves me wrong & i will hold my hands up & say what a mistake, but i remember the greatest thing since sliced bread (striker) having such a price tag & we said no, then let him go later for pennies!

I say take the money & buy a TOP striker someone who will score 25 goals a season for my beloved!!!! i,e Marcus Stewart! Not him......lol but a striker who is hungry & knows where the goal is!!!!!!!

why do people keep going on about this not being able 2 sign players because of the location. what poppycock, cant remember that ever being an excuse before. plus how many players have we signed over the years? yes, exactly, loads, & nearly every1 of them says what agreat area this is 2 live in. the location thing was just a keane excuse for the fact that players simply didnt want 2 play for him, & every1 seems 2 have believed him. if it was true then wed never sign a player from outside of the area. of course there bound 2 be 1 or 2 who wouldnt sign 4 that reason, but then im sure players havent signed 4 man utd 4 same reason. but in general that is not a reason that players wll not sign 4 a club

Hold out for a few spondoolies more , sale him and lets have a foreign forward worth the money with some change. Connor good lad but im sure forwards aint coming because he is already up front so they arent guaranteed a place up front.

agreed karlosfandangle,im past caring with the non events at pr.Im not impatient, been supporting them(and going),for 3o years now.But this is without doubt the most boring period i can recall, including john duncans 80s era.Whats funny is were reporting on what other teams are doing,ex qpr, hull ect having patheticaly vague links to players were sniffing around. This is surely because bugger all is happening at pr.

blues1 - so I am not entitled to my opinion and just because you don't agree with me I should 'go away'? Not that I have to defend myself to the likes of you, but I have renewed my season ticket and will end up spending thousands next year on travel supporting ITFC. If you don't agree with my comments then fine. The purpose of this board is to state an opinion and it would be boring and dull if we all agreed. My personal view is we have lost virtually all of our good players - with the last one (Wickham) likely to leave. We have not - despite PJ 'bigging up' the signing of 'players' in a week of the season finishing - actually achieved that. It was PJ, NOT the fans who said this. The club are I am afraid guilty of raising expectation. I also believe we should take a leaf out of Norwich's book and actually complete our business BEFORE pre-season training starts - I can't see us doing that now as there is so much work to do.

Fans will never agree on the choice of players brought, managers appointed, whether the CEO is any good. I REALLY hope the club prove me wrong and sign some excellent players and SOON. I also hope we retain Wickham, but for me the current status at ITFC does not lend itself to encouraging young Connor to stay. That's my opinion. It's obvious that some people agree and some people disagree with me.

What I do object to is people like you telling me to go away and suggest I am not supporting the club. Perhaps if you don't like other people's comments you should consider not reading this board. Just a thought.
