Liverpool Make Wickham Bid
Liverpool Make Wickham Bid
Friday, 3rd Jun 2011 23:28

Liverpool have made Town an £8 million offer for striker Connor Wickham, according to a number of national newspapers. The Reds have long been linked with the 18-year-old with their director of football strategy Damien Comolli at the Hull City match in February.

If the reports prove to be true, it’s unlikely a bid of that size would be enough to tempt the Blues and at least one paper claims the offer has already been turned down. A figure of between £10 million and £15 million is understood to be Town’s asking price with Wickham’s recently signed contract until 2014 believed to include a clause which would allow him to speak to a club if they make the Blues an offer at this pre-set level.

The Merseysiders, who Wickham supported as a boy, were also linked with the Hereford-born frontman earlier today, while Tottenham are long-term admirers.

If Town do sell Wickham this summer, they would probably prefer to do so after the UEFA European U21 Championship in Denmark later this month where, with all the Premier League big guns keeping a close eye on his progress, his value could increase.

After facing Norway in a warm-up game at Southampton on Sunday (ESPN/ESPN HD 2.30pm), Stuart Pearce’s side will take on Spain on June 12th, Ukraine on June 15th and the Czech Republic on June 19th in the group stages.

Any bid between 10 - 12m I would sell, I still don't believe he is that good. A nice change for our players to have a higher value placed on them than what they may be worth, we normally give them away going all the way back to when Terry Butcher left us.

Get it up to £10M and snap their hands off. Only 13 goals in 65 apperances at this level, he's hardly setting the world alight.

I would prefer him to stay, but as some of you say, he is not very prolific, even at cahmpionship level.

3 players recently released who I hope PJ will be in for

1 Marcus Hanehmann - A commanding goalkeeper, which we don't have.
2 Ivar Ingamarsson - Solid full back, Reading captain for9yrs (Our new captain ?)
3 Kevin Philips - No need to put a reason down. His name and goal record speaks for itself.

A bit of experience in key positions, no transfer outlay, and money left for PJ to look for some young and exciting talent.

Sell him I say. Dont understand why so many get so upset when transfer talk about him gets printed.

He is an OK footballer but not the messiah that everyone keeps banging on about.

He is the same as all the other greedy footballers. It is all about money. He has no more loyalty than any other player.

He would bench warm if lucky at Anfield. There is no way he would displace Carroll or Suarez.

£10m if £5m more than he is worth. Snap there hands off PJ and go get Sharp. He is more likely to get us 20 goals because Wickham wont!

I think this has an air of inevitability about it. I personally had hoped we might get another season out of him before the dutch auction [ which may not take place ], but I believe the get-out level is 10 million, which presumably is Liverpool's next bid [ if indeed this is not just paper talk ]. Maybe, this is Paul Jewell's only kitty for this year and we are relying on it to be able to buy. I know Clegg said there was funding already, but maybe this is it. I hope not. What ever will be, will be.

Norfolktrueblue, think you should change your name if you fancy following Kings Lynn because it's easier. I live in Norwich so I know it's not easy living with the scum but get a grip and support your club. Jewell will get the players to improve the squad before the window closes.COYB

Some of the comments on here are absolute dross. If we are linked with a player then we slag them off and state that it's just tabloid inch filling but if one of our players is linked elsewhere then the club is a joke cos we're defo going to sell them for peanuts. How many times has this story been on TWTD? I would guess at 20+. No other Championship club has made great strides in the transfer market yet so don't panic. £2.6m bid for Sharp & Coppinger shows we still have ambition. Norfolktrueblue - Enjoy Kings Lynn - they are fresh from liquidation and dropped through the leagues - and that is why they are competitive, they have found their level.
P.S. Looking forward to the name change to Norfolkfickleblue

Typical scousers trying to steal something! Double the money and then that's a fair deal, otherwise they can jog on!

Tractorintheloft, well said mate, like you i cant believe the rubbish spoke on here, all the doom and gloom merchants can all go watch non-league. We are in a better place than the budgies were 2 years ago and now look at them. I honestly think there are some decent signings on the way. Half the trouble is we need a real story, not just paper talk. COYB

What a load of crap. How can it "be reported" our price is between 10 and 15 mil? If you're a buying club that means 10 mil. If you went to a car dealer and said how much do you want for that BMW? And they reply between 10 and 15 large would you pay 15?

Dissitfc. Good post, too many on here fearing doom & gloom. If Connor goes to Liverpool or whoever, i,m sure it will be for a fair price but he aint gone yet, if so, then Mr Jewell will have a few quid to spend. Stop panicking some of you, this club is in not in a bad place.

at last, some realistic posts on here. whether wickham here or not next season is not going to determine whether we promoted or not, hes an 18 year old kid, not lionel messi. yes. would like 2 think we'd keep him for 1 more season but if he goes i wont be losing any sleep about it. the funds we receive will enable us to sign a striker experienced at this level who will get us the goals we need. wickham not guaranteed to do that. so lets just wait & see what hte squad is at start of season, & please those pessimists on here, stop being so negative about us not having signed ne1 yet. nor has hardly ne1 else,

It's very simple, he's under contract here so we are in the driving seat....IF the prospect of playing for Liverpool(I dont think he's close to being ready)is too much of a lure for him and his head has been turned then maybe let the lad move on....but with his age and England U21 caps, I'd want a minimum of £15m with a 20% sell on clause or extra payment for full England appearance...

Pointless saying take the money and use it for signings . The money will only sit as we do not attract players so we need to keep what we already have !

...maybe lets just get rid of everyone, close the ground and refund season tickets as well.

I agree with Karlofandagal. Phil can you stop posting this stuff please, this pre-season is becoming really depressing. Tired of the spurious claims, minimal action and rebuffed bids. Take Wickham and Bullard out of our side now Norris and Mcauley have gone and we have absolutely nothing left until money is spent.

Ok so if we accept the offer or even a higher one, think of it from wickham's point of view, he is 18 and still very raw and rough around the edges, needs to be playing regular, is he really gonna get in over Carroll and the superb saurez? I predict those two will be deadly next season and Liverpool might challenge for the title, just can't see Connor anywhere near the 1st team yet IMO. If we do sell up it's not the end of the world, when we sold dyer it got us promoted as we built a better squad with the proceeds, one player doesn't make a team.

am i the only one thats actually quite pleased the club arent making statements and were not hearing all sorts of 'offical' nothingness?

Yes we have lost some ok players.
Yes we had a manager who wasnt right for the club.
Yes we have a Chief Exec who doesnt know football.
Yes the papers spew sh1te which gets reprinted.

however,
we also have an owner who does have cash, so with the right person spending it, its a good thing....
we also for the first time since big joe royle, have a manager who seems to understand the game at this level from the bottom up
and we have people like Phil TWTD who spend their own time collating the ITFC info and putting it in one place for us to come and look at....... if you dont like what is being talked about, dont use the bl00dy site!

so before some of you start tying nooses and heading down the bottom of the garden to the big tree, wait until the start of the season and see where we're at.......

TBH all looks rather positive to me. A clean sweep out is needed and with Whickham Cash and further monies available, lets just be patient and see where we are in August.

Lets be honest - if Liverpool or another club offer £10M then Wickham will be sold. Possibly for less. As I posted yesterday, Wickham and his advisors will surely be asking whether ITFC is the club for them. Our only decent players already departed, no chance of signing Bullard and despite raising expectations on signings immediately after the season finished - FOUR weeks on we are still waiting as PJ and Clegg fail to deliver.

Our only four decent players were Bullard, Wickham, Norris and McAuley - with there be an excellent chance that none of those will be here next season and other clubs likely to sign the better players before we even think about it, things are I am afraid looking bleak. I hope PJ has something up his sleeve as he has been at the club long enough now to have identified what he needs to do. Of course whether Clegg can pull off ANY deal remains to be seen.

Here's how I see it:

On the face of it, getting £10m from Liverpool for Wickham would be good business. He has fantastic potential - but how many other youngsters over the years have failed to live up to that potential? Also, of course, he is only one bad tackle away from a career finishing injury. With both those scenario's he is worth nothing to us (and Connor I truly hope those fears never come to pass of course).

PJ certainly has shown that he is capable of rebuilding our side by tracking the right type of players, and subject to Clegg not effing up the negotiations we could be looking at having a cracking squad next season.

However, herein lies the big problem - I am fast coming to the conclusion that the "better" players no long look upon Ipswich as being an attractive team to sign for. However much we offer, or PJ sweet talks players, if those players "don't fancy" Ipswich they are not going to come. After all, our other better players couldn't wait to get out of town, whatever they may have said the local paper during the season!

I really fear for next season and whether at the moment we will be able to retain our Championship status with Connor Wickham.

Without him I really fear we will become the richest team in League One.

Sell Sell, use the money to buy Sharp, Philips and Haroun. I was at a party last night which Gavin Johnson was also at and he said we are in for Lee Bowyer?

algarvefan added 11:09 - Jun 4
If offered that kind of money for as yet unproven striker I'd take it PROVIDING the money goes into our transfer kitty AND is spent on new players. There are some on here being so negative I suggest you go off to Carrot Road and watch the budgies get stuffed every game next season!!!
