Liverpool Make Wickham Bid
Liverpool Make Wickham Bid
Friday, 3rd Jun 2011 23:28

Liverpool have made Town an £8 million offer for striker Connor Wickham, according to a number of national newspapers. The Reds have long been linked with the 18-year-old with their director of football strategy Damien Comolli at the Hull City match in February.

If the reports prove to be true, it’s unlikely a bid of that size would be enough to tempt the Blues and at least one paper claims the offer has already been turned down. A figure of between £10 million and £15 million is understood to be Town’s asking price with Wickham’s recently signed contract until 2014 believed to include a clause which would allow him to speak to a club if they make the Blues an offer at this pre-set level.

The Merseysiders, who Wickham supported as a boy, were also linked with the Hereford-born frontman earlier today, while Tottenham are long-term admirers.

If Town do sell Wickham this summer, they would probably prefer to do so after the UEFA European U21 Championship in Denmark later this month where, with all the Premier League big guns keeping a close eye on his progress, his value could increase.

After facing Norway in a warm-up game at Southampton on Sunday (ESPN/ESPN HD 2.30pm), Stuart Pearce’s side will take on Spain on June 12th, Ukraine on June 15th and the Czech Republic on June 19th in the group stages.

this is a good situation for us transfer wise, its a win win situation.if no one stumps up the asking price then we have spearheading our attack next season one of the top five hot properties in english football,"sweet",if connor does go then we can then and only then start talking realistic to players like sharp etc, that amount of money in this division opens more doors for us.we have suffered a long time in the transfer market for many years because we under value our players, then we struggle through lack of funds to get the best available replacement.connors move could trigger the arrival of 3 or 4 signings.i just hope the board stands its ground on the asking price.we have seen too many of our best players disappear for fees less than the starting asking price raising many supporters eyebrows.lets do this one properly

Dont sell him, i think he could be championships top scorer next season. he has experience at this level now would be a shame to see him go!

£10million and we can keep him on loan for 1 year. That way we get the cash to fund other purchases/loans to build a challenge for 11-12, we get to keep Wickham to see if he really will score the goals that push us forward, and Liverpool get him in 2012 that much more mature having played 1st team football for 12 months at a decent, if not Premiership level.

jas o999, if you read my post correctly, youd have seen that i clearly stated that every1 is entitled to their opinion. with that i totally agree with you. but trouble is, ive never seen you post anything positive on here, just negativity, & criticism. when its deserved fair enough, but 2 be negative because we not signing ne1, as yet, is not deserved. practically no1 in the championship has signed ne1 yet. so my point is be patient, get behind the club, just chill out. if we still not got ne players in by mid july then you every right 2 be pessimistic. & chances are, i'll agree with you 2

Andy Carroll had 1 decent championship season, and half a premiership season and a few goals....35 million. Connor was played out of position for the majority of the games he played last season. Let's show some ambition, keep him, play him in his best position, build a team that can give him decent ball. P.j. has developed many decent players in his time. There's a great deal Connor can learn from playing regular first team at this level, under P.J. that will stand him in good stead for the rest of his career.

oh, & having just read totally through ur last post, did u actually hear pj say hed be signing players almost immediately, or read it in the paper? know he said he wants players in early, so do we all, but it still is early. was the evening star suggesting players were gonna sign 2-3 weeks ago. & yes weve lost norris & mccauley. mccauley going is disappointing, i agree. frankly, the way norris was playing towards the end of the season hes no big loss. plus, providing we sign a defensive midfielder, that would allow leadbitter to play further forward in his best position, where he played when he 1st signed which will improve things greatly.(as long as he doesnt take set pieces).was not trying to offend you by the way, just would be good to see some balance in your comments. like you, ive supported the team for over 30 years, & have been known 2 complain at times. just feel after what we had to put up wih during keanes reign we should all have a bit more confidence in the present regime

should we sell or not?

if we get an offer of £1o million or over, yes, we should sell. this time next year he could either have got a bad injury or had a terrible season, in which case wed get nowhere near that amount for him. of course, im not ignoring the fact he could have a great year & be worth more, but its a risk either way. just think that the money we get for him could fund bringing in players who may get us promoted, as happened when we sold dyer.

£8m is nowhere near enough. The minumum we should except is £12m and any deal must include him being loaned back to us for at least a season. Connor is nowhere near ready to play for a top premiership side so would only get reserve team matches so a move now is unlikely to benefit him in the short-term footballing wise.
The worst thing would be to sell Connor then for him to be loaned to another championship club, that would really rub salt into the wound

The only decent money we've ever gained from a player sold is Richard Wright. Hopefully ITFC nowadays have more business sense and get as much as we can.

Quite a few football forums are stating that we've accepted a 2nd Liverpool bid.... obviously I'll only believe it when Phil confirms it, but it's looking ominous.

Really want him to stay at the club, at least for the next season. Cant see how we can attract anybody else with his potential. I also think that we will attract bigger crowds with him than without him.

Do not sell him, especially not yet. We get fleeced by clubs because of our wealth as it is, it will be taking the piss if we sell our best player for 10-15 million. Doncaster will probably want 5 mill. for sharp!
If we do sell him, eventually, loan him back to us?!

It's a done deal apparently. Lots of sites now quoting £10M including add-ons.....

At least we're not being completely robbed ala D.Bent.

I think 15 million then sell with a loan straight back if you look at all the inflated prices like £35 million for Carroll and £10 million being quoted for Alex oxlade-chamberlin then aparently Connor is the next big thing so lets get all we can. I honestly think if he was played up top with another decent striker we would see best of him

its a sad day when top clubs swoop down for our rising star . we need to get are arses up in the prem as soon as so as we can avoid these raids on our club and buy some ready made stars of our own

Apparently their 2nd bid has triggered the release clause (must be £10million). Hope there are some decent add-ons.
Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear....what a mess our team is in......
There is a rumour going round that Fulop is now unhappy too (wants a move). Not surprising given the fact that his mate (Priskin) is looking for the exit door too...
And why did Jamie Griffiths reject his 1 year contract and only sign for 6 months?
What is going on???? At least the "Jimmy Bullard return" rumours have dried up......
Just hope this 2nd offer for Wickham turns out to be unfounded....

Dissboyitfc - you really are in dreamland - one day, soon hopefully, you will wake up and see NOT what is happening to this Club - BUT WHAT HAS ALREADY HAPPENED - big style.

I would think Wickham can't wait to get the h#ll out of it - what a thought for him, facing, at the moment anyway, a season without a decent player around him.
And any potentially decent incoming player will also notice this fact too - not exactly encouraging I would say.
Wouldn't be surprised if we sign no one - other than perhaps a 'has been' or a 'wandering freebie' i.e Dyer who fits both categories.

jason0999 - you have to treat comments and views such as you refer too with the disdain they deserve - I certainly do now.
It is blatantly obvious that some people have no idea of what they are talking about - but they are entitled to their opinion - AS WE ARE.
After a while you get to know who they are, as you know - and ignore.
To suggest a supporter leaving the Club and going elsewhere proves my point - as IF this Club can afford to lose more support.
It's lost enough already, justifiably so in my opinion, without others being told to stay away. PATHETIC advice in my opinion, just because you give an opinion.

....... all we needed was a 'Dire Straits' Concert at Portman Road this Summer - how fitting that would have been.

'But all those quality incoming players will be queuing up to sign for us next week' - don't know what I'm on, but I don't recommend it !!!!
