Wickham Left on England Bench
Wickham Left on England Bench

Town striker Connor Wickham was an unused sub as England’s U21s opened their UEFA European Championship campaign with a 1-1 draw with Spain in Denmark this evening. Manchester United’s Danny Welbeck netted a late equaliser for Stuart Pearce’s side, who had been largely been outplayed by the Spanish, Ander Herrera having put them ahead before the break.

England face Ukraine on Wednesday and the Czech Republic next Sunday in their two remaining group games.

Meanwhile, Jaime Peters is still to make an appearance for Canada at the CONCACAF Gold Cup in the US. The Canadians, who lost their opening group match 2-0 to the hosts, beat Guadeloupe 1-0 on Saturday.

Canada face Panama on Tuesday in Kansas City in their last group match.

May he stay an unused sub. We don't want an injury - whether he stays or goes.

I was there and England really were lucky to get a draw. But one point against spain is an ok opener. I hope we can go all the way. Sad not to see Wickham get a chance. Really hoped he would come on. So another bloke at the stadium in an Ipswich shirt :-)

We were rubbish! Should've stuck Wickham on for a bit of presence upfront, then again I was saying Welbeck should've gone off!

This shows how overpriced English talent is. That Herrera chap was sold for less than £10million I believe, but we want more than that for Connor. These stupid Homegrown rules just inflate prices.

I only watched the second half since the first half was trumped on telly by the rain delayed Canadian Grand Prix.

From what I saw Spain played a possession game, but unlike Barcelona it was largely boring to watch. Walker looked useful for England and supplied a good ball for Welbeck who took his chance well but was suprisingly not closely marked.

Hopefully we'll see Connor in action in the next games.

It was like watching Man U v Barca...men v boys. They were so much better than us in every aspect. Whenever they got the ball they kept it and built...we were lucky to keep it for more than 3 - 4 secs. When we got the ball we always seemed short of options and seemed in a hurry to get rid of it for fear of messing up. I thought Welbeck was awful. Petulant little prima donna who should've got sent off for a second yellow.
It was a wonderful chance for Connor to show his strength and hold-up play; everything that was missing. Shame Pearce didn't give him a chance. Could've added a few more millions to his eventual sale price....let's hope he gets a chance soon.
