Turkish Club Target Fülöp
Wednesday, 15th Jun 2011 15:49

Town keeper Márton Fülöp is being targeted by Turkish top flight side Bursaspor. The Hungarian international only has one year left on his Blues contract, having signed from Sunderland for £750,000 last August and seems likely to move on during the close season with manager Paul Jewell looking to bring in a new senior number one.

The Bursa-based club recently targeted West Brom keeper Scott Carson but have now turned their attention to Fülöp, who has been in and out of the Town side since Jewell took over from Roy Keane in January.

Despite backing his current keepers towards the end of the season, Jewell is understood to want to bring in a new first choice this summer, having last month made an approach for Coventry’s out-of-contract Republic of Ireland international Keiren Westwood, who now appears to be on his way to Sunderland.

Arran Lee-Barrett has signed a new two-year deal and, despite being picked ahead of Fülöp for a spell towards the end of the season, looks likely to be seen as back-up rather than a regular starter. Brian Murphy opted against extending his stay and is currently looking for a new club.

Fülöp’s exit this summer has always been on the cards with Jewell keen not to allow players’ contracts to run down in the same way that David Norris’s and Gareth McAuley’s this summer.

Don't think he will sign an extension. Maybe time to cash in...

Makes the decision to let Brian Murphy go look a bit stupid.

Go back to Brian Murphy and offer him a contract to the value of his last one or an improved offer. Always had the safest pair of hands in his time at PR whoever else was there at the time.

currently available for free theres, marcus hahnemann, joe murphy, jason brown, richard kingson, paul rachubka and maik taylor so theres potential to get a good keeper cheap if we look in the right places, however if we are 'building' a new squad as it seems we are i would suggest spending on a top quality shot stopper lonegan springs to mind or david james perhaps, id even like to have a punt at someone like chris kirkland who isnt playing?

Nothing against Fulop but his signing exemplifies the Roy Keane signing policy. Having consigned Richard Wright to obscurity, he found that signing an acceptably better replacement was no easy matter. His targeting of Sorenson was fruitless and ultimately, bottom line, he had to settle for a keeper who proved to be no better than RW and was not demonstratively better than either Murphy or L-B.

The lesson which I hope will not be lost on PJ is that you have to replace players to improve the overall quality in any given position is to buy the replacement first and then move someone out.

PJ must like something in L-B otherwise a 2 year contract looks excessively generous given that others were only offered short term deals. However the games against Norwich & Swansea at the end of the season showed us surely that he is not going to be the No. 1 for the next two seasons.

But as of 7th May L-B was higher in the pecking order than Fulop (according to PJ) so MF's days may well be numbered.

Think there's a good chance Rangers number one MacGregor will be on his way this summer so Alexander may end up as Number One - can't see him wanting to move.
