Coppinger Looking Forward to Season at Doncaster
Coppinger Looking Forward to Season at Doncaster
Wednesday, 22nd Jun 2011 17:49

Town target James Coppinger says he’s happy at Doncaster and is looking forward to the start of pre-season training at the Keepmoat Stadium. The Blues made a £300,000 offer for the 30-year-old last month with a further bid of £400,000 reported to be in the offing.

However, Coppinger says he’s in no particular hurry to leave the South Yorkshire club: "I'll be reporting to Doncaster on 4th July and I'm looking forward to it. I can't wait to get back and I'm looking forward to next season."

The midfielder, who played alongside Town coach Sean McCarthy at Exeter, was away when Rovers rebuffed the Blues’ offer but talked to chairman John Ryan on his return: "I came back and spoke to the chairman and we left it at that.”

Town manager Paul Jewell said last week that he would continue his pursuit of Coppinger but had decided not to make any further overtures for his Doncaster team-mate Billy Sharp, the subject of a £2.3 million offer made at the same time.

Meanwhile, Sunderland have confirmed the signing of former Coventry keeper and Town target Keiren Westwood on a free transfer.

Elsewhere, Brighton manager Gus Poyet is said to have played down yesterday’s reported interest in Town striker Jason Scotland.

'I came back and spoke to the chairman and we left it at that' - so he is keen on a move then?! Hope we get him!

Good for him, hope he stays at Doncaster and enjoys his season fighting relegation. We have back up midfielders already, need better than him R Reckon

he might as well stay at doncaster to fight relegation than move here to fight relegation?

That's ok , if Coppinger is "happy at Donny", move on Town. I dont take it as a slight on our club. Some players are happy to stay at their club. Consider for a moment that perhaps he feels happy to saty at Doncaster because he percieves himself to be one of the big fish in the little pond, and maybe the thoughts of playing for Town is actually a bit daunting for him! We want players that can step up to the mark. Not players that cannot cope with the step up in expectations!

My sources tell me we have £3 million to spend,Chopra cost half of that,I hope the free transfers work out,it will be the shrewdest move for years.

nearly50yearsblue, "My sources tell me we have £3 million to spend", what sources?
Marcus Evans? Simon Clegg? Paul Jewell? Come on fess up, its a bit of banter with the old boys after 3 or 4 pints and a bag of smokey bacon around the fruit machine at The Suffolk Punch comparing and contrasting the team of 1981 with 2001 isn't it!!?!! "My sources" indeed.

I detest Smokey Bacon crisps, have not been in the Punch for years, there is no comparison with the 81 to 2001 team.
Apart from that you are not far off.

Never mind. Edwards is as good IMO. I would sign sharp and copps if wickham leaves.

Shame he could have replaced Norris
But fair play to him he didn't take the bigger clubs move
Maybe if we up our offer he may change his mind
There are other central midfield players out there now let's snap one up

Cheers nearly50yearsblue. The first & last time I ever went into The Suffolk Punch was in March 1982. I remember it as it was the week after my 18th as it was first and only I was asked for proof of age when buying drinks. Tell a lie I went there for a birthday party in the upper room once too in mid 80's. What a sh*t hole!! Agree about 81 v 01. Having been at R Road in West Stand for home games v St Et, and Cologne etc in 81 and back of Churchmans surging when we scored at will against AZ67 I know that those days will - sadly - never be repeated .... for us, or for anyone outside of top few in Premiership!!

Sounds to me he is being sarcastic to his chairman. So when you signing copps? Monday would be a good wager!

Could mean he will join us, might not, who knows.
This story is as pointless as the Norwich trophy room.

Anyone who actually watched any championship footy or indeed the donny game at home would know this lad is a constant threat. Good player, maybe 30, but at 500k quality for at least 2 seasons. Really hope we sign him up.

Don't know much about this chap, is he worth the punt?

DiamondGezzer added 06:51 - Jun 23
HKBlue :- Very much so. Billy Sharp wouldn't have gotten half his goals without him. Lets hope we sign him.

YER He was really good at Portman rd last year but so was Carson, both of them in the squad would be a bonus for our strikers!!
