Palace Targeting Smith
Palace Targeting Smith

Crystal Palace are weighing up a £300,000 move for Town central defender Tommy Smith, according to reports this morning. The Eagles are said to turning their attention to the New Zealand international having failed to sign Patrick Kisnorbo, who has put pen to paper on a new two-year deal at Leeds.

Smith is yet to appear for Town since Paul Jewell took over as manager and the Blues boss may well be willing to listen to offers for the 21-year-old, who was sent out on loan to Colchester at the end of last season.

However, Jewell is likely to want to add to his central defenders before allowing Smith to leave with Gareth McAuley, Troy Brown and Tom Eastman all moving on this summer.

Meanwhile, George Boateng, who was training with Town late last week, is said to be in talks with his old Middlesbrough boss Steve McClaren regarding a possible move to Nottingham Forest. Reports over the weekend claimed McClaren will look to sign a number of his old Boro players,

Elsewhere, former Blue Kieron Dyer, who spent time back at Portman Road on loan last season, is said to be ready to take a massive pay cut to remain in the Premier League. Dyer, who is understood to have started pre-season training with his former club West Ham, was linked with a play-to-be-paid deal with Everton late last season. Town's interest in signing the former England international appears to have cooled.

League One Charlton are reported to have made a £200,000 offer to Spurs for right-back Adam Smith, a player the Blues, Burnley and Reading are all targeting. Smith has previously said he is looking to play Championship football this season having spent the last campaign at AFC Bournemouth.

Southampton are reported to be ready to offer Huddersfield £500,000 for ex-Town winger Gary Roberts.

Didn't have the best of loan spell at Col U by all accounts.

but with our current shortage of centre-backs I think we need to keep hold for a while.

They can jog on!

If we sell him we will need 2 good central defenders rather than the one more which is proving tricky as it is! May not set the world on fire but solid back up for the first choice pairing.

take the money and put it towards a right footed, dominate centre half with some pace - ummmm someone like McAuley ???

Jog on Palace.

Clearly more to come from him, his World Cup performances show he'll be able to cut it in the Championship no problem.

Let him go. Neither big enough nor quick enough. Take off the rose tinted (or blue tinted) and let's look for a strong, quick, athletic centre half.

Though the jury is still out on Smith can I again point out that defenders do not have to be 6'3'' lumps with a bit of pace to control games - Puyol, Cannavaro, Jagieka or Knight, Upsom or Linegan anyone? Get another quality CB in who Smith can learn from and see how he does this year.

No. Need more defenders not less. He's a young international with plenty of promise. If we're going to sell we should not accept anything less than twice this paltry offer, and then only after getting in two central defenders and a right back.

Accept and goodbye - Terrible defender. Remember this is the guy that struggled at Colchester being at fault for 3 goals in 1 game.

Why do Crystal Palace always try and get our players cheap.

Smith would be good back up. He played well in the world cup.

Regardless of how much you rate Smith, for me we are at least 2 defenders short already, so we would be mad to sell him as things stand.

Too be honest thought he played well at the beginning of the season and scored a couple of good goals.

for 300k I would keep him as so far we have only really replaced players Bowyer for Norris, Chopra for Wickham and Ingarmarsson for McAuley
Ellington will fight for a place with Scotland and Priskin and on last 4 years has a no better strike rate than them and Cresswell I can only see playing from the bench

The squard lacked depth and 13 out and 5 in, I feel we are weaker than last year at the minute, if everyone stays fit we will be ok but a few injuries and we will struggle. Feel we need a Bullard/Coppinger type of midfielder still another striker, Maynard/Sharp and a CB. would still need CB cover and look for another RB

Keep him, how many other championship teams can say they have a player that went undefeated at the world cup at the moment?

I think 'Town' should definatley keep him,i think he's a young lad learning his trade. He was given a chance under RK,played fantastic in the World Cup,is a threat from corners....yes he made the odd error in games, but so did a few others in the matches i watched !!

keep him!! i really rate this guy, and it is proven that he has potential from that man of the match performance he put in against italy in the world cup! i'm not a manager, and i doubt i ever will be, but if i was paul jewell, i'd get in two great centre backs, and put tommy out on loan to one of the better league one teams, presuming they'd have him! but definitely keep this guy, he just needs to be confident in his abilty! COYB!!

Think his world cup performances were helped by having an outstanding defensive partner.
Always looked ordinary to me, not the kind of player to take ITFC forward.

Sell

i apprciate he had a bad spell at colchester but im sure that many decent players have had bad loan spells and gone on to be half decent players. Would not sell hom as i think that he still gas a future at the club

Hungry_Badger added 11:18 - Jul 11
Don't sell him for that amount, he's only 21 and could still have a great future at this club.

on balance i'd keep him. he had some good games but needs to have an experienced partner alongside. on the plus side he's strong, good heading and can score valuable goals from set pieces BUT his weakness is pace and passing (many going astray). For now i'd keep him as cover for DD but we do need another CH to complete squad

Who wouldn't have a bad loan spell at Colly Utd.? Keep him as one for the future: maybe loan him out if we get someone more experienced in.

Not really sure what to make of Tommy Smith - I really hope he will push on and be a great player for us, but despite being given the chance at the beginning of last season - he didn't really deliver and his distribution was actually very poor. He also failed during his loan spell at Colchester Utd. PJ also appears to be less than impressed with him. Yet, we are VERY short of centre backs. We know PJ wants another CB, but if Smith leaves we will surely need two?
