Stockdale Loan Confirmed
Stockdale Loan Confirmed
Tuesday, 26th Jul 2011 14:16

Fulham have confirmed that keeper David Stockdale has joined the Blues on a season-long loan "with immediate effect" and has also put pen to paper on a new four-year contract extension which will keep him at Craven Cottage until 2015.

The 25-year-old is keen to leave Fulham for a short-term spell in order to gain experience, while the Cottagers are believed to have demanded a recall clause in case of injury to first choice Mark Schwarzer.

Stockdale told the Town official site: "I had a great talk with the gaffer here and Ipswich Town is a big club so I was eager to come here.

"The manager told me about the quality of the signings he's made and where they're heading and everything he told me made me keen to make join the club.

"Now I'm just looking forward to getting going and playing my part in what I hope will be a successful season for Ipswich."

Earlier this month Swansea made an unsuccessful attempt to sign the former York and Darlington glovesman on a permanent deal but the Cottagers are only willing to discuss a loan deal. Leeds were also interested in a loan but their proposed deal is understood to have broken down due to the recall requirement.

Leeds-born Stockdale, who is 6ft 3in tall, played youth football with Huddersfield before joining York's youth set-up, breaking through into the first team in 2003.

Having spent time on loan at Wakefield-Emley and Worksop Town, Stockdale moved to Darlington on a free transfer in 2006.

Impressive performances for the Quakers led to Fulham offering a fee which would eventually reach £600,000 after various clauses had been triggered in June 2008.

While at Craven Cottage, Stockdale has spent time on loan at Rotherham, Leicester and Plymouth and he has made only 13 starts for the Londoners, eight in the Premier League.

An England National Game XI player while in the Blue Square Bet Premier with York, he was named in the full England squad twice earlier this year but is yet to win a cap.

Town boss Paul Jewell has never appeared entirely convinced by first choice keeper Márton Fülöp, replacing him with deputy Arran Lee-Barrett for a spell towards the end of the season before recalling the Hungarian.

Lee-Barrett, who signed a new two-year deal over the summer, and Fülöp, who was briefly linked with Turkish side Bursaspor prior to Scott Carson joining them, have both started games during pre-season.

Stockdale looks likely to make his first start for the Blues at Colchester this evening (KO 7.45pm).

Jay Emmanuel-Thomas's move from Arsenal for an initial fee of £1.5 million rising to £2 million after various clauses are triggered is expected to be announced later this afternoon.

Whys does everyone hate Fulop so much? He's a good goalkeeper, he can only stop so much that our leaky defence has let through in the past season. Keep Fulop, get rid of ALB

We just signed a full england international and possibly a future one in JET, what a great day for ITFC and all concerned! Simon Clegg has come in for some huge critisism for not getting deals done, by that token he deserves huge credit this pre-season, can you ever remember a better one?? Well done Simon, Paul and Marcus!!!!

Risky with the recall clause. No way fulop can be sold, still required here.

I know what those of you who say "still no JET" mean because we've all learnt to never trust a signing until it's official. But it was Fulham who announced the Stockdale news, not us. Even I now expect both JET and Fulham to be turning out for ITFC tonight against Colchester. Great work by PJ. COYB.

Hollywood - agree with that. Clegg got a lot of flack and I admit I was none to impressed by his start at Ipswich but he has certainly got on with the job this summer. Think the fact that PJ takes an active role in dealings and talking to targets helps as well.

Sourco72 -

Now now let the past be the past,

We've all moved on from that dark era now, Onwards and upwards.
This could be the start of a good fortnight, Hopefully other players will see what were bringing in and we can sign two or three more as it is clear we are not just in it to make the numbers up next season, where here to challenge and with what i've seen thus far i'm a very happy tractor boy......

No doubt a quality keeper, but for how long will we have him? Mark Schwarzer, 39 in October, surely won't go through the whole season without injury, suspension or loss of form. Stockdale really impressed when he came in last season, so I think Fulham just want us to warm him up ready for when they need him. Where does that leave us?

Fulop, rumoured to be our highest paid player and with his contract expiring next summer, surely has to be sold now to recoup some of the big transfer fee Keane blew on him.

Lee-Barrett may be OK cover for a game or two, but not longer than that. I know loanees are available, but only during eligible time periods.

I wonder if Richard Wright would be willing to sign for us as our number two? He could get a chance to impress again and could step in if Stockdale gets recalled.

Great signing but worried also that we may lose him.
Mark great shout on Richard Wright, now he's back with Malcolm Webster (his form at Saints was good under him as well as here) he would be a great number 2 & has the experience to step up to the plate, which ALB does not.
So get rid of Fulop, Wrighty No 2 & ALB No3....Simples!

Welcome to ITFC David and lets keep our fingers crossed that Mark Schwarzer can stay fit because I think that this is a great signing if we can keep hold of him for the season.

If Fulop either isn't deemed worthy by PJ of a new contract or should he have been offered one and has decided not to sign it I think we should sell him now rather than get nothing for him next summer.

If the worst happens and Stockdale is recalled there are always options on getting other keepers on loan that we could pursue.

Although this is a bit of a gamble because of the recall clause the fact is we wouldn't be able to sign a keeper of Stockdale's quality on a permanent basis. I'm happy to have the best keeper that we can between the posts so if a loan is the only way to achieve that right now then so be it.

Good luck David and I look forward to seeing you in a Town short for as long as possible this season.

A good signing. ALB is a very poor keeper and although I like Fulop, there can be little doubt he has also let us down at times. Like others though, what will happen if Fulham recall him?

Great news and welcome David. I was talking with a Fulham supporter at the weekend who really rates him.

Think we need to replace both Fulop and ALB to be honest.

Another quality signing from PJ. My mate who is a Swansea fan is gutted we got him and not them albeit on loan. Does this mean Fulop on his way? Would like to see ALB as no.2 anyway. Welcome David. Play well.

..... not sure that this is much to get too excited about - apparently a 24 hour call back clause in the contract - and we all know that realistically it will happen, perhaps sooner rather than later.
