Sonko: Match Went Well
Sonko: Match Went Well
Tuesday, 23rd Aug 2011 19:35

Town trialist Ibrahima Sonko says this afternoon’s 1-1 reserves draw with Colchester at Playford Road went well and he’s waiting to see what happens next. The 30-year-old former Reading and Stoke centre-half, who TWTD was first to reveal was on trial earlier today, played the full 90 minutes of the behind-closed-doors friendly.

Sonko tweeted: “Game went well. Now I do not know what's going to happen, we can just wait and cross fingers that everyone [is] happy like I am.”

A free agent having been released by Stoke at the end of 2010/11, the Senegalese international spent pre-season with his old club Reading but was unable to agree a deal with the Royals.

Former Blues keeper Richard Wright was also in the reserves side facing the U's this afternoon.

I say sign him to a 1 year contract, with a further 1 year clause in his contract if he reaches certain goals, like games played, etc.

So, who was at fault for the goal this time?

It seems Sonko really wants to join Ipswich. He sold for £2M+ three years ago, he's an international, he is still only 30, he once had a good partnership with Ingimarsson, he is willing to take a big pay cut, we DESPARATELY need a centre-back (especially a right-sided one)...so there seems to be every reason to sign him up.

he is only 30 why not a 2 year deal with a 1 year extension?

All seems to good to be true - right age for a CB and more than affordable in terms of wages. Get him in!

Always rates him. Fingers crossed we get him signed.

If we could also sign another cb and Jimmy Bullard I would be very happy. Think that might be pushing it a bit though :-)

Can I ask a question? If he signed, would Ingy and Sonko be our first choice CB pairing? Do we necessarily need a Left-footed and Right-footed pairing? Plenty of teams don't have them.

Sonko = good signing.

Better would be Suler from Genk

Several on here say 'sign him' but is he any good. A knee jerk reaction to the last 3 results is not the way to go. A short term contract unless PJ is really convinced about his ability.

Alfromcol - I was hoping we would sign him even before the season started when I saw he was on a free so not a knee jerk reaction. Like I said have always rated him. There are never any dead certs when signing players but I am hopeful he would be a very good performer

TownOnTheUp - Have you been speaking to victorywill happen? As I speak, I hope he's scouting MK Dons on the clubs behalf. Scored three(sorry, well not sorry 4)! and keeping a clean sheet so have some defenders too! How's Lewington playing M8?

What really makes me laugh is the fact that nearly everyone says 'sign him up' when its most likely none of you have seen him play! Mark Fish (ex-Charlton) was good once but remember what happened there?? If Sonko was still decent tgen surely PJ would have already signed him over the summer, for cover if nothing else. No Panic signings, Please!!

For effing hecks sake. Sign him, it is impossible he could be worse than delaney.

marcus139 - I have a cone in my shed thats possibly not worse than Delaney

I tend to go along with Warky's Tash in worrying that this is could turn out to be a knee-jerk signing.

Mr Evans really needs now to release a little of his tight grip on the purse strings to allow us to sign genuine quality (if possible given how we are doing), or otherwise I really fear this is the season we go down.

However, if Sonko does sign for us soon, then I wish him well and will be cheering as loud as any supporters to encourage in his first game. However, to date, with a couple of exceptions, PJ's signings have not impressed me too much.

We've got nothing to lose by signing him

marcus139 added 22:38 - Aug 23
Dommyboyblue how much does your cone want a week? Take the agents fee! Seriously, why delaney was given a new contract is indeed beyond me. Oh, i forgot, he had no real ambition to leave under any circumstance as i remember and probably would have taken minimum wage to stay. The reason being, he has nothing about him and is utter sh!te. Yet we let mccauley go for nowt and i expect still gets an average mans salary for a year in a month. Clegg, come to work for my company. You will be sacked in a month.

he seems keen to sign. the question has to be why has nobody else signed him already when we all know there are other clubs besides us that need defenders.

Would be a strong signing, Always been a tough defender. Was great at Reading.

Just what the team need. Would be great signing, even better on a free.

Baring in mind we only have an unfit Delaney on Saturday I am quite surprised to see people are actually against this signing, it would appear that a few people on here are experts in every player out there, I can only judge on the fact that sonko was once very good, he may very well still be at this level but in the truth of the matter, we need to sign someone. The age old adage "to a man with no money, a pound is a fortune" springs to mind.
