Sonko: Match Went Well Tuesday, 23rd Aug 2011 19:35
Town trialist Ibrahima Sonko says this afternoon’s 1-1 reserves draw with Colchester at Playford Road went well and he’s waiting to see what happens next. The 30-year-old former Reading and Stoke centre-half, who TWTD was first to reveal was on trial earlier today, played the full 90 minutes of the behind-closed-doors friendly.
Sonko tweeted: “Game went well. Now I do not know what's going to happen, we can just wait and cross fingers that everyone [is] happy like I am.”
A free agent having been released by Stoke at the end of 2010/11, the Senegalese international spent pre-season with his old club Reading but was unable to agree a deal with the Royals.
Former Blues keeper Richard Wright was also in the reserves side facing the U's this afternoon.

I don't like panic buys but the reality is that we are desperate for a new CB for Saturday v Leeds. We need someone to really make their presence felt and Sonko could be the answer.Let's do it and give him a great reception.

victorywill happen- I have seen the Valentin Roberge rumours 2 (they are all over the net). Starting to wonder if thats why Sonko hasn't been signed up yet. They might be waiting to see whether or not they can get Roberge. If thats the case it would make sense (why else haven't we signed Sonko yet??). No nothing about Roberge. Plays for Maritimo and has played against Porto/Sporting/Braga/Benfica etc regularly. Could be a good buy and good age. Saw that he is rated at about 700,000 euros.

Marko Suler is a good potential signing. Wouldn't hurt to sign up all 3 given the state or our defence. Roberge can apparently play in midfield and defence. Could Suler or Sonko play as right back? Stockdale, Suler, Roberge, Sonko, Cresswell Edwards, Bowyer, Leadbitter, Carson? Chopra, Scotland. Somehow this team "feels" better. Might still need someone decent on the left (time to fork out serious money on Boyd)

I should never have included Leadbitter in that line up. That new guy from Blackburn will do. JET to rotate with Scotland.

Phil would have put up the Roberge rumours by now if they had any credibility. Fair enough, they are all over the net, but so are UFO sightings! Have we even been linked with this Suler guy? Sonko needs signing up,how bad can he be when compared with smith and ainsley (who he replaces)? Delaney needs replacing to.

In all seriousness this one does seem a bit of a no brainer when we have a serious lack of CBs and if we have other signings are coming in surely he would be decent back up. I think we need another 2 centre halfs as well as Sonko. Basically 4 that do not include Delaney and Smith.

Why is Sonko still knocking around as a "free"? Why hasn't he already been snapped up. I'm not saying he shouldn't be signed ('cos I've no idea); just asking the question!

Sign him up! Let's face it, we are desperate for experienced defenders and Sonko fits the bill, knee-jerk signing or not. At 30 he's at the prime age for a defender. He's a physical presence, very experienced, and could form a ready-made partnership with Ingimarsson (from their Reading days), which could be a huge stabilising factor seeing as we need to almost completely rebuild our back line. As others have said, it really is a no-brainer given that Sonko is on a free, keen to join and willing to take a big pay cut. Sign him on a one year contract, it's worth a punt. I refuse to accept that Sonko could be any worse than Delaney and Smith.

I don't know why everybody is so keen on signing him, his awful, fair enough his better than what we've got but his still sh!t.
Suffolk_n_Proud added 08:56 - Aug 24
oh and pj has got to think he's not that great, or at least not the solution to our defensive problems otherwise he would have signed him when he first went on a free or when sonko first said he wanted to come here, not a month later
superaltown added 09:19 - Aug 24
er, spoken to Reading and other fans and there is a reason this guy is on a free. He doesn't lack commitment but is basically awful.

We should sign Sonko. He wants to play for us and has made that clear. He was playing alongside a young French Defender in the "behind doors" game, and we tested out a lad from the Czech Republic in midfield. Thats all I know of the "grapevine" talk! (its accurate info though..)

Usual stuff , good player, good experience , we need defenders right now but Clegg will delay and he will sign for someone else Sign him up NOW !
itfcboi added 12:16 - Aug 24
Tuesday PM and still no news on this! Sign him up for god sake! Even if its a short term solution it will hopefully kick the others up the backside and force them to play for their place in the side. You never know it might make Delaney and Smith wake up and wear the shirt with pride and actually mentally turn up for games rather than just turning up to collect their wages!
