Jewell: We Need to Stop Feeling Sorry for Ourselves
Jewell: We Need to Stop Feeling Sorry for Ourselves
Saturday, 10th Sep 2011 18:03

Boss Paul Jewell says Town need to stop feeling sorry for themselves after conceding goals. The Blues rarely looked like getting back into their 2-0 loss at Blackpool once Gary Taylor-Fletcher put the Seasiders in front four minutes after the break.

Jewell said: “We look at the minute that once we go a goal behind it’s going to be hard work for us to get back in the game, certainly away from home. Up until the goal, there was nothing in it, so we’re disappointed to lose the game.

“At the moment our heads are going down once a goal goes in and we’ve got to stop feeling sorry for ourselves.

“Nobody gives you anything for nothing in this game. Whatever you get in football you earn and we earned that little bit of luck we had against Leeds.”

The Blues boss says the whole side need to defend better: “A lot of the time our defence has come in for a lot of blame, but as a team we don’t defend well enough.

“From the front, through to the midfield to the back four, we get exposed too quickly by teams running through the midfield, and we’ve got to work harder when we’re not in possession.”

Jewell also felt Town failed to make the most of their opportunities when they came: “We did have three chances where we could have scored where we didn’t make the keeper work.

“Jimmy Bullard went through when we’ve got five against three and Daryl’s had two opportunities, so if one of those went in it might have been different.”

Overall, the Town manager concedes his team is very much a work in progress: “I think at the moment we’re searching for a formula, we’re a bit unbalanced. We don’t know our best team at the moment, to be honest.

“Danny Collins has come in today and been terrific and after beating Leeds last week we wanted to take that on today.

“I thought in the first half we did OK, against a team which was in the Premier League last year and have some good players.

“We don’t have that belief to go on and dominate games at the moment, and think that’s evident to see.”

Blackpool manager Ian Holloway was pleased with his side’s second home win of the season: “I’m delighted for the lads. We’re used to losing and this group’s trying to get used to winning, but sometimes you can get a little bit nervous.

“In the first half we didn’t pass it as well as we normally do, but in the second half we did. Thanks to the fans, they really helped the lads.

“I think the second goal pleased me more than anything. It was a lovely move and a sidefoot into more or less an empty net when they had everybody chasing.

“We made it look easy, and good teams normally do that. We looked a good team for a few minutes in that game, so I’ll have to settle for that and try and move on to the next time.”

Oh look.
We have the players but they are not yet a team.
What is a team? An effective unit that scores more goals than it concedes.
Currently our play rate is about 9/11.
My word what will happen when we really start to interact?
Dynamite!

Nothing has changed in 5 years with new players and change of managers. No expectations from local paper hoping for a draw today. suffolk radio hoping for a draw today. supporters hoping for a draw today. Jewell singing the praises of blackpool and telling us all what a tough game it will be(same excuse every week). Jewell talking about winning ugly same as keane magilton and royle in the end.. S**t negative football every game for the last 5 years. The teams all doing well are playing passing attractive football with no household names in the cchampionship. If playing defensive football every week is resulting in defeats then why not go for it???? look at our players we have some great ones at this level. Jewell is a great bloke but has to get real a mid table finish is not acceptable. Look at transfers spent in recent years and the current wage bill. Most managers would dream of having this at there disposal. Its not good enough and not acceptable. Rant over!! I am not one of the idiots that moan about everything on this site. I am just angry bored and frustrated at the moment.

Is every single member of the squad positive, confident and working hard?

Do they have the benefit of their manager's confidence...each and everyone of them?

Or does PJ have reserves which mean that he is not getting the best of some excellent players? (which he has chosen himself)

PJ . You have selected your players. Now its your job to create a team. Your high ability is well compensated.

Poor old Paste's geriatric rabble yet again don't have a clue.

Still waiting for an ITFC stooge (one paid by the Invisible Man to write ridiculous propaganda) to explain how signing an elderly racist thug constitutes rebuilding.

Or an elderly Viking. Or an elderly Cockney. Or an ancient Trinidadian. Or an arthritic Irishman. Et al.

Average age of starting rabble of 11 players vs Blackpool : 29 years 4 months.

Exclude the goalie and the two youngest outfield players (Cresswell and Leadbitter).

Average age of the remaining eight : over 31 years 2 months!!

Promotion? Rebuilding?

You're all being conned!

As fans on here we are always polarised in the extreme. Some of us think that things are coming together and we are one result away from promotion, while others think that things are falling apart and that relegation is more likely. In truth, as with everything in life, it's something in the middle. Results are not good at the moment but the squad should be good enough to produce better. Recent history has shown that we cannot be carried away with every good result and neither should we get too paranoid about the bad results. Yes, it needs to be better but football is not an exact science and we need to accept in these transitional times that there will be rough as well as smooth.

In the middle? Of a crisis more like. We have beaten a poor Bristol City, 10 man Leeds and nobody else including Northampton ffs

It's not just about defending Mr Jewell, even though that is highly important of course, you do not seem to fully acknowledge that their Goalkeeper did not have to make a save until the 92nd minute, what on earth is that telling you, are our Strikers not receiving adequate service ? if not surely that requires some very serious attention, I was not at the match and can only reflect on the content of Radio Suffolk's commentary which seemed to sum the game up afterwards when Alex Mathie simply said "It aint good enough "

I've given up on supporting Ipswich after all these years ......I am 39 and supported them since 1976. I am now a Southampton supporter as that is where i was brought up ......it is with heavy heart and sadness i bring you this news , the passion and flair of the 70's early 80's and some of the early 00's has vanished , the company is owned by a billionaire buffoon with nothing like the endeavour and charisma of the Cobbolds from yesteryear . We have taken on board a manager whom i do like but has managed teams in the past who are let's be honest bloody boring and still are ...ITFC is a flair club and has been ostracised as one of the members. Least Southampton have never changed their spirit and playing style . I actually think the chimps that recently got released were actually our aging players leaving the ITFC Playford Road training ground .....it's very disappointing. I'm off to St Mary's ......x

Did not go or listen to radio so can only pick up from comments on here.

My major concern is that Ipswich under Paul jewell has never attacked opponents until a goal or more behind. Why not put the other team under pressure from the start?

Marcus Evans has provided adequate funds for players to improve the squad but still there is no commitment to attack.

Chopra will not score 10 goals this season unless there is a change in tactics.

tractamatt, glad to see there are some realistic people on here. well said. pazelle, u really are a total idiot. you cant even put a reasoned argument up. ypu put up your team, with stockdale in it then say send him back to fulham. you then put the worst stiker at the club in the team. what planet are you on? what we need is to be patient, to give the team time to gel. it may be we have to wait til next season for us to really challenge for promotion. dont think some people realise just how bad a situation keane left this club in. it not gonna happen overnight

In midweek we saw a Wales team unluckily beaten by England. Man for man, as a team, Wales shouldn't have been on the same pitch - on paper. But they more than gave England a game. And why? Because unlike England they passed and moved, passed and moved. And because they played with a creative intent they gained confidence as they pushed England back more and more.
That's how Ipswich used to play and how they should play now. You don't have to have world beaters in every position but you do need confidence and you do need to play as a unit - and you have to move as a unit! Why is this essentially simple game made so difficult? I think we have seemed to have created a psychology at the club of fear of failure instead of a passion to "give it a go". If that's the mindset, you're beated before you take to the pitch. Damn it all. Goals are the aim of the game. We can't even get strikes on target now! Go on PJ - just tell the players to go out there to enjoy themselves and forget about systems. Most are good enough but they seem stifled by expectation and fear.

Fair enough Cartman, close the door on your way out. Just remember Southampton haven a long history of buffoon owners who even only a couple of years back took them to the brink of oblivion. All I can add is that anyone who can change loyalties after this length of time was never a fan in the first place.

blue 041273, i dont tend to agree with much you say in here, but you spot on with that post. no1 who is a true supporter of the team would either just stop supporting the team or switch their alliegance to another team. cartman, you should be ashamed of yourself. to those of you suggesting jewell should be sacked. get real, just remember the mess he took over. needs time to put right all the wrongs of the keane era. remember a certain manager at man u who fans wanted sacked after he took over a not too dissimilar situation. does anyone here believe they would have been right to sack ferguson then?

Ok. Disappointing result. In one sense an improvement considering we were getting hammered 5-2 and 7-1 only a few weeks ago. In a way I think we've improved defensively, at least in the back four.

We were on the front foot in the first half but just couldn't find a cutting edge. Second half Blackpool came out, hit us with two quick goals and that was it.

I'm annoyed because obviously this was going to be a tough game, and yes I would have been relatively happy with a draw, but it just sounds like we didn't do enough today end of.

We've got some good players, PJ has done the business signing wise. Our biggest problems seem to be age, fitness and gelling. Not much can be done about the fist but fitness levels will improve as will team play.

We just need to grit our teeth and ride it out. I still back PJ even if he isn't perfect in all his decisions. I think next home game against Cov will be a real acid test of the squad. Stay behind the team blues fans!

I'd like to see us play with more attacking intent both home and away. Let's stop the 4-5-1 and play 4-4-2, keeping it simple and most importantly play the best player for each position. I sometimes think Jewell picks the eleven biggest names at the club and tries to accommodate them in a formation. If a couple of 'big' players have to be benched then tough, but trying to show-horn in four central midfield players every game is ridiculous.

Let's have some genuine width and take the game to the opposition. They say the best form of defence is attack, and given the state of our defence, perhaps that's the mindset we should take.

I shall miss listening to away games when Mathie is in the box as he has yet to make a positive comment even when we do well ! He is continually running down our players ( except Leadbitter ) and giving the impression they are not capable of improvement ! They need to play together to blend , when the number of new players in the side is as high as 9 ( I count JB as an old player ) , it is very difficult to know each others strengths and weaknesses and styles of play in a short time especially when they are not yet a settled side ( due to injuries etc ) .

Jewell is beginning to look as clueless as Keano. I am confident we will finish above the relegation zone ... just. That is just not good enough!

May seem stupid to some, but as a supporter today i was happy to pay £24 in total for a trip to blackpool, despite the result. It will come, our home form will improve and we will still struggle away from home, no need to panic.

I rate PJ but we got what we deserved from our visit to the seaside - nothing. I think he and I must have gone to different games given his comments.

The team played ok in the first half but went missing badly in the second half and Blackpool seemed happy enough just to see the game out once they went two up. If they had gone looking for more then it could have 3 or 4.

On a postive note, Collins and Sonko I think could be good central defensive pairing after a few games together.

Murphy's effort was abysmal. Murphy and the Blackpool keeper have one thing in common from the match, they did very little for their pay.

Carlos was ok today but every team that we play will target him as a weak leak whilst he plays at right back.

I can't believe PJ played Leadbitter. He needs to be dropped for the good of team and player. Perhaps he can then comeback stronger or go out on loan. The captaincy also seems to be a burden rather than an inspiration to him.
