Jewell: We Need to Stop Feeling Sorry for Ourselves
Jewell: We Need to Stop Feeling Sorry for Ourselves
Saturday, 10th Sep 2011 18:03

Boss Paul Jewell says Town need to stop feeling sorry for themselves after conceding goals. The Blues rarely looked like getting back into their 2-0 loss at Blackpool once Gary Taylor-Fletcher put the Seasiders in front four minutes after the break.

Jewell said: “We look at the minute that once we go a goal behind it’s going to be hard work for us to get back in the game, certainly away from home. Up until the goal, there was nothing in it, so we’re disappointed to lose the game.

“At the moment our heads are going down once a goal goes in and we’ve got to stop feeling sorry for ourselves.

“Nobody gives you anything for nothing in this game. Whatever you get in football you earn and we earned that little bit of luck we had against Leeds.”

The Blues boss says the whole side need to defend better: “A lot of the time our defence has come in for a lot of blame, but as a team we don’t defend well enough.

“From the front, through to the midfield to the back four, we get exposed too quickly by teams running through the midfield, and we’ve got to work harder when we’re not in possession.”

Jewell also felt Town failed to make the most of their opportunities when they came: “We did have three chances where we could have scored where we didn’t make the keeper work.

“Jimmy Bullard went through when we’ve got five against three and Daryl’s had two opportunities, so if one of those went in it might have been different.”

Overall, the Town manager concedes his team is very much a work in progress: “I think at the moment we’re searching for a formula, we’re a bit unbalanced. We don’t know our best team at the moment, to be honest.

“Danny Collins has come in today and been terrific and after beating Leeds last week we wanted to take that on today.

“I thought in the first half we did OK, against a team which was in the Premier League last year and have some good players.

“We don’t have that belief to go on and dominate games at the moment, and think that’s evident to see.”

Blackpool manager Ian Holloway was pleased with his side’s second home win of the season: “I’m delighted for the lads. We’re used to losing and this group’s trying to get used to winning, but sometimes you can get a little bit nervous.

“In the first half we didn’t pass it as well as we normally do, but in the second half we did. Thanks to the fans, they really helped the lads.

“I think the second goal pleased me more than anything. It was a lovely move and a sidefoot into more or less an empty net when they had everybody chasing.

“We made it look easy, and good teams normally do that. We looked a good team for a few minutes in that game, so I’ll have to settle for that and try and move on to the next time.”

Hmm... I really am a bit lost as to what we need to do. It seems like we lack real leadership on the pitch, at the back, across midfield. We don't have a real target up front who will cause defences problems in the air. We don't have width. We don't have pace. We don't have energy in midfield. It seems to me that we have tried to 'rebuild' incorrectly and will pay a price. I don't believe it'll be relegation, but we're a mid-table team, with mid-table championship players.

Give Chopra a big partner. Give us pacy left and right midfielders. Give us a Jason De Vos at the back. Give us a real right back. Give us a Shaun Derry or John Eustace type player. Just think about our team with those players in it.

So why do we not have them? Well, fingers may point at the owner for lack of investment. However, look at Townsend last season, or Brady at Hull this year, young players on loan. How about in the lower leagues?

No, for me you have to look at the manager. I want him to prove me wrong. I really do. I'm really struggling to end this post properly, so I'll just reiterate that we are a mid-table club and it's the manager's team.

Well, given that the seagull was man of the match for us I guess we all know how it went.

To be fair, first half we shaded it without having a shot on target. Never looked in danger. Then they scored and it was obvious they would score again, Jewell was too slow to change things.

Edwards - you are not a right back, please relocate to the right wing or go home (on public transport obviously)

Cresswell - the most naive left back we've had for a long while, always out of position and guiding his man the wrong way. Responsible for so many goals and stress already, you are not ready (apparently Mark Kennedy can play left back)

Bowyer - is your shirt number equal to your IQ? Sort yourself out.

Leadbitter - just go please

Bullard - will let you off, clearly not fit

Murphy - you had the 3 best chances of the match. Shall I draw you a picture of the goal? If you don't care, please go with leadboots

Chops - sorry we kept "passing" the ball 10 feet over your head.

Sign the seagull now

We appear at the moment to be playing for one half of a game, take yesterday, slightly the better team in the first half without creating anything of note or we wake up in the second half of a game when we are already behind. Once everybody is fit and gelling, ninety minutes of effort required chaps. At the moment, too many going missing [ not trying to simplify our problems - just the way I see it ].

Went to the game and thought we gad the better first half but we didnt punish them when we had the chance. I know it very early days and we currenly have eleven men and no team but with an improved back four we will see how it goes. Can't play Carlos as a right back as he needs to go on the wing and murphy was terrible. I could believe when jewell made the changes he left murphy on. Never have I seen a player look so lazy and down hearted. Funny moment of the game was when it looked like bowyer was showing sonko how to head the ball. Jewell needs to make this a team and get some belief. Coyb

Another woeful display I'm afraid. The first have was pretty much a non event but Blackpool 'upped it' after the break and there was only going to be one winner after that. As the Soton, Peterboro and Leeds games (plus numerous games at the tail end of last season) showed, we are hopelessly inept at dealing with teams that attack us with pace and the midfield to a man were chasing shadows. The only chances we did create were ballooned miles wide of the mark in embarrassing fashion by the dreadful Murphy. The only plus was the performance of Collins, who I think looked pretty sound and certainly committed. At the moment we appear to have numerous pegs in the wrong holes and whilst the jury is still out re some of the new arrivals, I have a horrible feeling that the vast majority of them are the wrong pegs at that. Jewell has a big task on his hands to turn our fortunes around and for the first time I'm really starting to wonder if he, and the players he has at his disposal, are up to that task. Hope I'm wrong.

I think what is needed is probably more solid work on the training ground rather than chopping and changing the team every 5 minutes, but how about (if fit - big "if" in the case of Ingimarsson):

Stockdale (obviously!)
Kennedy, Collins, Sonko, Ingimarsson
Andrews
Cresswell, Bullard, Edwards (or Carsson)
Chopra, Scotland

The worrying thing at the moment is that we are falling down this league like a stone, and cannot seem to correct our fall, I know it is early days as yet, but with our next game on tv,( we all know what a tragedy they can be) and after that Middlesborough and West Ham away, WOW !! when will we get back to winning ways ????? Brighton at home perhaps ????? COYB !!!!

Too much bleating and not enough support for a team that is in the process of developing. Fcuk off to Carrow Road. You know who you are.

I've changed my mind Southampton is dreary and full of ex pompey scabs......i will never change allegiance just wanted some tedious reactions . 35yrs i've supported Ipswich and have just spanked what seems an insane fortune on a football kit for a 2yr old to ensure the loyalty stays in the family .............it's just such a mess at the moment and i expect a defeat every game at the moment , why the dickins Leadbitter is still Captain is a conundrum i can't work out ...should be Andrews or Bullard , someone to motivate . When we signed Bowyer i was elated but now just deflated , he has gone from a class player in the premiership with Birmingham last year to someone who seems to be on his last legs....oh the embarassment of sunday mornings with my mates!!!!!!

We aren't going to have any chance of winning a game this season whilst leadbitter is still in the team! It really p*sses me off and I honestly don't understand what PJ still sees in him.. Only now and after this result and team selection am I beginning to doubt that he is the right man for the job, and I seriously hope he can turn it around and quickly!

Come on Jewelly you know a 4-3-1-2 makes sense. we could have the same back fourand keeper. 3 cms in bowyer, bullard and andrews. give JET the free role behind the strikers which he had in the first half on the northampton game. then stick scotland and CHopra upfront.
Stockdale
Edwards Sonko Collins Cresswell
Andrews Bullard Bowyer
JET
Chopra Scotland

If we played this and let bowyer sit back so the full backs attack we'd look good. Also we must pass to scotlands FEET because thats where he is most useful. COYB

Basil - grest nostalgia, remember Beat's and Mariner's goals as if they were yesterday. Standing on a crate in Churchmans.

Given the age profile of the players, if these are the excuses being offered, we should be more worried than optimistic - at least that is how I feel! An old squad without any tangible set up or formation suggest Jewell is not the man for us.

Given that the manager surely sees every player nigh on every day, why is it taking them so long to gel..?? Why bring a player in on the Friday and play him on the Saturday..? Clearly no time to gel.... What exactly do the players do each day...? Have they been properly introduced..?? I am bored with PJ's nonsense. I have been watching Town for the last 30 years but never have I seen us so clueless. I support the Club not any individual and do not like hire and fire but Mr Jewell seems out of his depth and needs to focus his future on media work IMO!

I think we have got a top squad now that most other clubs would be proud of but it's not just about getting a group of "stars" to wear the shirt in my opinion.A top manager can get the best out of an average team & I think we are better than that so we will see how good a manager PJ is.I do know a new team needs time to gel but it's not the losing that upsets me cos every team duz that but it's how we lose!

I just don't understand the players we have brought in are good players.
The strikers are not scoring that is my main concern.
We need a strike duo to get us into the top 6 & I can't see why chops & murphy can't do that. I know they need the service from other players.
We just have to wait & see if this town team can gel it is still early days but we need to get things moving quickly.
Jewell also needs to find his best team to make us compete for the playoff's at least.

Dont know about anyone else but,and i'm not saying this as an exscuse,I was peed of with the arrival of the international break I there was no momentum carried onwards from beating leeds and while its not the main reason for our loss yesterday I dont think it helped,Coventry is the sort of game we should expect 3 points from and then maybe we can build on that.Personally i'm more concerned with staying up than winning titles and thats the same every year at this stage good or bad start to the season. We need confidence that is born of momentum of 3 or 4 games without defeat and we will be fine and we can do it.Also dont be surprised to see a new young winger coming into the squad before the coventry game.PLEASE any true supporters out there,STAY OF THE BACKS OF P.J AND WHAT PLAYERS WE HAVE,they don't need us on their backs they need us behind the singing and shouting and chanting them on.COYB.

brockleyblue, have we signed a new player? who is Andy Dyer??
Do you mean Drury?
Hey everybody calling for Jewel to go, get real, what do you want? another manager in ? a new squad in again and then after half a dozen games , sack him if results are not right? do any of you believe that is a winning formula ???
Not even the late great sir Bobby Robson, acheived over night success.
its gonna take time, yesterday was a pretty much a home banker.
over too many seasons now supporting ipswich has been a roller coaster ride, but give jewell time please, its what is needed to smooth the ride. COYB

........ playing Murphy on the left of midfield - absolute JOKE - and I'll guess he hated it. No wonder he had a poor game.
Square pegs in round holes continue - Jewell, it has to be said that you are doing a Derby on us - you really haven't a clue, as is being constantly proved.

When are some of you deluded PJ lovers going to accept that Paul was an abysmal appointment? So many excuses - 'he's trying to sort out Roy's mess' - what with LOANS and FREES for has been injury prone players - when will he realise we need some youth and pace in the side? This is now Paul's team - he has been here over 8 MONTHS - the time for excuses has gone. Has it not dawned on people that PJ is a VERY NEGATIVE manager (just one shot yesterday)? It is clear - obvious - that he tries to bore people to death with his negative approach - there was a bloke ASLEEP behind me at the Hull game!

Stop the excuses. Paul will NOT turn this around - here's your evidence:

1. 16 players out in the Summer; 12 in. Shortfall of 4. A 1/3 of the 12 are LOANEES. Will they care if we go down? The majority of the rest are players on frees, over 30 and injury prone. Building for the future? Pitiful. This smacks of Norwich and Sheffield when they were relegated.

2. EIGHT defeats in ELEVEN games. SHOCKING. people on here called for Jim and Roy to be sacked for a lot less!!. 1-7, 2-5, 1-5, 1-4 and 2-4 are just some of PJ's 'brilliant' results.

3. Under Roy and Jim we had around 22,000 people at PR. Under PJ and in under 8 MONTHS he has managed to lose us 4,000 fans. We are lucky to get 18,000 now. For crying out loud - can people not see what PJ is doing. This negative style is ruining us.

4. Derby are still recovering from the mess he left - just ask them. they hated the guy - boring football, poor results.

5. After 8 MONTHS he STILL doesn't know what he is doing. He even admits it!

So, poor results, poor signings, failing to identify what we need. Poor formations, negative football, other clubs fans calling us boring. It's a sorry state of affairs.

Why people keep going on about Roy is beyond me. This is PJ's team. It's PJ's fault. He has failed. Goodness, anyone can see we need pace and some youth in the team - PJ wants slow negative has-beens.

Note: Before anyone says - let me clarify: Roy was rightly sacked. But sorry, you can kid yourselves as much as you like, but results, attendances and performances are MUCH worse under PJ.

SACK PAUL JEWELL BEFORE ITS TOO LATE.

Already been said but we need youth and pace. Current squad hasn't been built with the future in mind, high priced journeymen and ex-prem players. If nothing is gained from this season we're going to be rebuilding again next summer regardless of who the manager is. Where is any long term strategy ? Next summer will need to replace Bowyer, Ingimarsson, Edwards, Scotland, Ellington,Healy, Drury the list goes on and on. All the loanees will need replacing. All these players have no resale value so no funds will be coming in via sales a la connor this summer, guess that money is paying Bullard's wages amongst others. Who in the current squad can we expect several years of good service from Cresswell, JET, Carson, Chopra (and the jury is out on most of those). We have no one in the squad anymore of significant sale value , so any purchases from here on in will have to be funded by ME.
I'm not being negative just greatly concerned, I can't remember the last time our scouting network turned up a real gem. (let's hope with Cresswell).
Now our academy has stopped producing as it did under the Burley era (Dyer, Bent, Bramble, Scowcroft, Ambrose, wright etc were all essentially made the players they were by burley) we are reliant on the transfer/loan market .I hate to say it but to outsiders we are turning into an anonymous 2nd tier club who employ a succession of mediocre managers and scores of journeymen players none of whom have an affinity with the club or the area, think Coventry, derby etc.
RK has to take a measure of blame, however, IMHO the changes PJ has made do not appear to have made a significant improvement to our chances.
I sincerely hope i'm proved wrong.
