Jewell: We Need to Stop Feeling Sorry for Ourselves
Jewell: We Need to Stop Feeling Sorry for Ourselves
Saturday, 10th Sep 2011 18:03

Boss Paul Jewell says Town need to stop feeling sorry for themselves after conceding goals. The Blues rarely looked like getting back into their 2-0 loss at Blackpool once Gary Taylor-Fletcher put the Seasiders in front four minutes after the break.

Jewell said: “We look at the minute that once we go a goal behind it’s going to be hard work for us to get back in the game, certainly away from home. Up until the goal, there was nothing in it, so we’re disappointed to lose the game.

“At the moment our heads are going down once a goal goes in and we’ve got to stop feeling sorry for ourselves.

“Nobody gives you anything for nothing in this game. Whatever you get in football you earn and we earned that little bit of luck we had against Leeds.”

The Blues boss says the whole side need to defend better: “A lot of the time our defence has come in for a lot of blame, but as a team we don’t defend well enough.

“From the front, through to the midfield to the back four, we get exposed too quickly by teams running through the midfield, and we’ve got to work harder when we’re not in possession.”

Jewell also felt Town failed to make the most of their opportunities when they came: “We did have three chances where we could have scored where we didn’t make the keeper work.

“Jimmy Bullard went through when we’ve got five against three and Daryl’s had two opportunities, so if one of those went in it might have been different.”

Overall, the Town manager concedes his team is very much a work in progress: “I think at the moment we’re searching for a formula, we’re a bit unbalanced. We don’t know our best team at the moment, to be honest.

“Danny Collins has come in today and been terrific and after beating Leeds last week we wanted to take that on today.

“I thought in the first half we did OK, against a team which was in the Premier League last year and have some good players.

“We don’t have that belief to go on and dominate games at the moment, and think that’s evident to see.”

Blackpool manager Ian Holloway was pleased with his side’s second home win of the season: “I’m delighted for the lads. We’re used to losing and this group’s trying to get used to winning, but sometimes you can get a little bit nervous.

“In the first half we didn’t pass it as well as we normally do, but in the second half we did. Thanks to the fans, they really helped the lads.

“I think the second goal pleased me more than anything. It was a lovely move and a sidefoot into more or less an empty net when they had everybody chasing.

“We made it look easy, and good teams normally do that. We looked a good team for a few minutes in that game, so I’ll have to settle for that and try and move on to the next time.”

Anyone that says Jewell has failed, you ARE a just a boring moaner. How can you fail a task you've just begun? Last season's remit was to stay up, therefore the task I'm referring to started on August 6th, and who says this season's objective is promotion? Jewell's target will be progress, you can't say he's failed in that already.

I'm backing you PJ.
I think Carlos is our best winger, and his spell at right back may help him become a more complete winger, ie he will track back to help out better than he did.
We should get in a new right back, or maybe play ingarmarsson there, because i'm not keen on more loan players. We've a week until coventry, so plenty of time for him to get fit. Cresswell at left back, with Sonko and Collins at centre half.
Edwards on the right and Carson on the left with Bullard and Andrews pulling the strings in the middle (with one of these being captain), and Chopra and Scotland up front. Keep the ball on the floor to feet, give Edwards and Carson the licence to bomb up and down their touchlines, Bullard and Andrews to demand the ball from Sonko and Collins rather than it being hoofed long, but bnot to come too deep for it. Pass and move, keep the ball, learn to not be scared of having the ball at your feet, enjoy yourself!
This is just a basic system and basic instructions which our players could be following. I just think PJ is afraid to lose, so we pack the midfield with centre midfielders and play just one up front.
I'd rather lose 4-3 and had a go rather than lose 1-0 or draw 0-0 playing negatively, come on lads, play the town way and lets attack, attack attack !!!!!!

basilsmallpiece, thanks for posting video was great to see that again, but that was some 30 odd years ago, we were one hell of a team once, but that was then this is now. we cant keep going on past glories, this team now is not to be compared with the great teams of the seventies and early eighties, but compare the situation now to the situation when Robson took over, and remember he did nt get them playing like that after a half dozen games. seem to remember fans wanting Robson sacked.
Lets give Jewell the time that Robson had to make a great team.
Was great memories i was at that game and its all they are now, memories.

We have , as a team ,been on the end of some real hammerings under Jewell - But it is PJs job as a MANAGER (along with his staff) to MOTIVATE , ENCOURAGE and get the best out of players - I do worry for an Aaron Cresswell - talented boy - playing alongside some - who frankly are here for a last paycheck
Bowyer is an embarassment and a luxury to play alongside Bullard and Andrews - That has to be the slowest and oldest midfield we have had in years .
Players like Hyam, Drury - I believe - may benefit playing alongside the experience of Andrews and Bullard . Carson as well would get confidence and when Martin is back I think we will see a better shape ( more natural) and a good blend of Younger and older - Chopra will score goals and defensively we are in a better position than two weeks ago - we do need a RB though
So personnel wise I am happier BUT I am fed up with some of PJs excuses - The manager does need to create belief in players and I would hope over the next week , work on how to pass the ball from the back - Come and watch my U12s PJ they seem to manage ok - No more long punts to 5 foot nothing strikers please

Jewell's BIG FAT "F" aint't for a fantastic start to the season is it? "F" is for failure to produce a winning formula at the moment!!!!!!!

He needs to get the team playing and soon as PR will turn into a Drury Lane!!!!

He is doing No better than RK!

Oh well onwards and upwards heh hopefully will will be eating our words at some point soon and I hope it is soon!!

I hate to think what this board will look like if we lose at home to Coventry. Its early on in the season but I'm starting to feel that this is already a "MUST WIN" game.....
We really have taken some monumental beatings under PJ. Another one -
Ipswich-1-4 Coventry could spell the end.
Coventry and their fans are desperate for the 3 points too. They think this is an easily winable game so it will be an interesting one. I think if we battle hard we could earn a score-draw. Edwards at right-back is constantly being torn apart and thats never going to change until someone else is put there.

Yep I think a one eyed chimp with a squint could see last season where teams attack us mostly - Edwards is targetted and whilst he is ok going fwd a RB he is not - this has been an achilles heel at this club since .... errrr ... Wilnis ? We MUST be able to find a proper RB -

How can no one else see what a good game Edwards had on Saturday. I'm all for a new right back but give the guy some credit he was superb.

No reason we can't beat Cov, we matched Blackpool (still quality) on Saturday for a half and if it wasn't for Chopra we'd have been one up.

Nice free ride up to Blackpool for the Missus anyway ,keeps her happy for this season . As for the fans not much to enthuse about . Tough division ,maybe a bit of realism after the first game of season v Bristol City which had peoples hopes up. There isnt a quick fix here .
PS Time for Clegg to move out .

Self Pity is all we have left PJ; another season of 'building' ahead. Must be a hell of a big building.

Agree with Garv, some people need to chill out.

PJ has had just under two weeks with his finalised, no more signings, squad (plus an extra centre back on saturday who hadn't even trained yet). To replace the hugely inadequate team that Keane had built was a mammoth task, even with the money available. Still, Jewell has signed some real quality in JET, Chopra, Bullard, Cresswell and more. Now all he needs is to get them to gel. They've hardly played together! It's hardly Jewell's fault that he had to replace the entirety of our useless squad, so let's at least give him some time to train them off before we completely slate them! Or else January will see us have to start all over again, again.

Goodbye Ipswich Town. I'm off to enjoy myself away from this car crash of a season. See you in January when PJ and Chris "worst defence record in the whole Football League" Hutchings are gone. Hope you're enjoying your investment, ME.
