Jewell: We Need to Stop Feeling Sorry for Ourselves
Jewell: We Need to Stop Feeling Sorry for Ourselves
Saturday, 10th Sep 2011 18:03

Boss Paul Jewell says Town need to stop feeling sorry for themselves after conceding goals. The Blues rarely looked like getting back into their 2-0 loss at Blackpool once Gary Taylor-Fletcher put the Seasiders in front four minutes after the break.

Jewell said: “We look at the minute that once we go a goal behind it’s going to be hard work for us to get back in the game, certainly away from home. Up until the goal, there was nothing in it, so we’re disappointed to lose the game.

“At the moment our heads are going down once a goal goes in and we’ve got to stop feeling sorry for ourselves.

“Nobody gives you anything for nothing in this game. Whatever you get in football you earn and we earned that little bit of luck we had against Leeds.”

The Blues boss says the whole side need to defend better: “A lot of the time our defence has come in for a lot of blame, but as a team we don’t defend well enough.

“From the front, through to the midfield to the back four, we get exposed too quickly by teams running through the midfield, and we’ve got to work harder when we’re not in possession.”

Jewell also felt Town failed to make the most of their opportunities when they came: “We did have three chances where we could have scored where we didn’t make the keeper work.

“Jimmy Bullard went through when we’ve got five against three and Daryl’s had two opportunities, so if one of those went in it might have been different.”

Overall, the Town manager concedes his team is very much a work in progress: “I think at the moment we’re searching for a formula, we’re a bit unbalanced. We don’t know our best team at the moment, to be honest.

“Danny Collins has come in today and been terrific and after beating Leeds last week we wanted to take that on today.

“I thought in the first half we did OK, against a team which was in the Premier League last year and have some good players.

“We don’t have that belief to go on and dominate games at the moment, and think that’s evident to see.”

Blackpool manager Ian Holloway was pleased with his side’s second home win of the season: “I’m delighted for the lads. We’re used to losing and this group’s trying to get used to winning, but sometimes you can get a little bit nervous.

“In the first half we didn’t pass it as well as we normally do, but in the second half we did. Thanks to the fans, they really helped the lads.

“I think the second goal pleased me more than anything. It was a lovely move and a sidefoot into more or less an empty net when they had everybody chasing.

“We made it look easy, and good teams normally do that. We looked a good team for a few minutes in that game, so I’ll have to settle for that and try and move on to the next time.”

John - great post. I am afraid many on here will not agree because despite delivering some of the worst results we have ever known - people on here love PJ. Sadly for him, he's not welcome back at Derby - a club that he ruined. Same mistakes are sadly being made here. Like you, I would like nothing better than for PJ to prove me wrong - but it is very concerning.

I also don't see why people should say 'go to carrow Road'. Sure you may not like to hear the obvious, but since we have lost 4,000 fans since PJ took over - I doubt the club can afford to lose any more!! I truely wish there was something positive to say, but eight defeats in eleven. Not good and people have the right to state their opinion. If you are happy with that - plus negative football, plus all the loan, plus all the oldies, great - I'm not. We will be back to square one next Summer - when the loans go and the oldies retire. Question is will we be in Division one by then. As I predicted when Paul took over - yes, I believe we will.

jas0999 - Lots of interesting points but we are at where we are at. It is too early to even consider sackings etc. It's also too early to see what or if there is any long term strategy. Rightly or wrongly many promoted teams have to rebuild very quickly anyway so the fact that we may only get a season or two out of some of these players is perhaps not as critical as it may appear.
The players we have got should have the experience to drive us up the table. Whether PJ has the nous to know precisely how he wants his team to play I'm not sure. Agree about pace being in short supply but it needs to be balanced with skill Haynes had the pace ....
For my part, I'd like everyone to quit focussing on results and concentrate on how the game is being played. If players were enjoying it the results will come. If the style is attractive true fans will turn up to watch. Problem may be that now we are in an era of businessmen that only understand "results" and in trying to reach the Premiership cash cow have lost sight of the reasons for the game. The Cobbolds didn't enschew success but they understood that the sport is the key. Entertain the fans with the quality of football first, the rest will follow.

I think players come to "off the beaten track" back water, Ipswich because they know its going to be easy street! no pressure no great demands easy going soft as shi* fans who will put up with any old crap!
Maybe its like it at every club these days but nobody seems to wear the shirt with pride and passion like they used to.

Try to tell me jas0999 that on January 3rd against Nottingham Forest there were 22,000 people in the ground.

Its a sad day when I start agreeing with some of what I read in jas0999's posts!

I keep willing PJ and the team to prove him wrong and I sincerely hope that that happy day comes along soon!

When PJ says 'we've got to stop feeling sorry for ourselves' that applies even more so to to his own attitude as before the Blackpool game he sounded utterly negative.

No more 'we're a bit unbalanced', no more 'we're still looking for the right formula', no more 'the team is a work in progress', no more excuses.

No offence jas0999 I don't like the idea of you being right!

Well, well, well. At last you lot are beginning to realise what a bad appointment the Pyjama Man was. His (and Hutchings) track record is pretty dismal and until ME sees this and does somthing about it all Town fans will be looking at the lower end of the table. Some of Jewells signings are absolutley abysmal. The last manager got slated for his signings!!!!! Say no more.

If it brings a change in mentality tollernator, it's a good thing. Just look at our friends up the A140. Doesn't matter what division the team is in everyone wants to watch a winning team.

Went to Blackpool yesterday to witness the last defeat. First half we competed and I felt a draw was on the cards. But second half was very poor, our midfeld seemed second quickest to the ball, passes were going astray. Why can't learn from footbaling teams, such as Blackpool, Norwich, Swansea etc and start the passing the ball. We just tend to lump it up for Chopra/Murphy to run onto to. Lets work the ball into dangerous positions by passing it, even Magilton tried to play this way.

Where the has Chopra been hiding for the last five games, I don't think he's had a touch! Just shows the service he's getting from midfeld. Bowyer is too old, lets play Carson, Andrews, Bullard and O'Conner in midfield. Its as easy as that Mr Jewell!

Jewell's signings have been very good. I havnt seen many on here complain when most have been announced. The test is now to see if Paul is a good enough manager to get them playing and essentially winning. When you see a team full of new signings play badly, you CANNOT call them 'bad signings'. Chopra could have earned us a draw ATLEAST if not a win with the chance in the first half that he should have scored, but I don't see anyone calling him a bad signing. I'm not going to use the word 'gel' but I will say you could have a couple of the best players in the division in this team and it still wouldn't work because you don't play to their strengths. That Blackpool team yesterday has been together for two years plus, with a couple of additions, which means they know how to play together, and Phillips fits their bill perfectly.

We know Jewell has/will make better signings than Jim and Keane so we need to keep this team because we know there are some GOOD players, make a SMALL amount of additions in January and the summer but keep the core of the team and get them to bloody play together! I genuinely don't believe that at the end of this season it will not be the oh so usual 'rebuilding process' that happened, or was needed in 09,10 (not many came in) and this summer.

I can't predict what will happen this season, but I don't think it will be a relegation fight, and sadly nor a promotion challenge. To be fair a lot of people before the season said they'd be satisfied with just outside the play offs, and maybe if I was to predict it, that would be it.

Collins is a brilliant signing, even if only for 93 days.

It's a TEAM game!

i hate to say i told you so ... but i told you so !! This is a disgrace, once you all see that the team jewell assembles are far worse then anything magilton or keane put together then you will se the light and realise he is nothing but a waste of time.
Under magilton or keane were we ever this bad ? the answer ... NEVER
Okay we lost games but with keane it was by the odd goal, now we are gettin hammered week in week out, its pitifull to watch and pathetic ....

A lot of good posts on here. I hope Jewell can turn things around. On paper we have got a very decent squad that can achieve at least the play-offs with the right guidance. Is PJ guiding them well enough? Results have got to change quickly 8 defeats in 11 is poor.

poggie added 18:39 - Sep 11
I believe we have been very patient, but it's getting increasingly difficult to stay positive. Not sure a new manager is the answer, but Jewell's predictable platitudes week after week are really starting to grate!! Surely we should be seeing some improvement by now? ...

Yesterday was a hammering pmason? Do me a favour!

I give you 0-3 Southampton, 0-4 Newcastle, 4-1 Norwich.

Jas sorry but you can't include games from last season in a 'poor run of games', you can't say '8 losses out of 11', its a new season for goodness sake stop using excuses to put the team down.

Re: the square pegs in round holes argument...i have to agree with some on this one. The more people you have playing their natural positions the more balanced a side you have and for the love of God, stop playing Chopra up front on his own. I don't care if we get beaten by 10, i want to see him forge a partnership with someone.

> Ainsley instead of Edwards at right-back
> Edwards on the right instead or maybe carson but not a central midfielder
> Murphy up front and O'connor or Peters on the left in the absence of Martin
> No Leadbitter
> Andres and Bullard in the middle

Wasted money: JET and Ellington

So, Coventry at home and an 8 day wait to put it right *sigh*....

Garv - It may be a new season but PJ was in charge at the end of last season when we were losing, he has had time to change things around and get in the personnel and a system to stop that losing streak and except for two fortuitous wins guess what? We keep on losing.
0

Tiggs added 19:28 - Sep 11
Ok Garv, lets look at this season. 4 defeats out of 6, in which we scored three and condeded fifteen!!!! Oh, let's not forget about losing to Northampton, the only game they have won this season I believe. Get real man. PJ really is not the man, never was from day one.

Tiggs added 19:35 - Sep 11
Don't forget Ingamarson, Sonko and Bowyer Keaneish.....
0

IvorFeeling added 20:43 - Sep 11
Keanish - totally agree with that. More worryingly I also agree with some of JAS0999 comments too.

However, one point not made is that of an alternative. 'out of the frying pan into the fire' comes to mind. Think about the work you guys do and if you work in a team, what happens when a valued member is replaced - it takes time for the team to get unto the optimum again. 11 new guys is a whole team.

If by the mid/end November, the performances and results haven't changed then that is the time to really question if it will ever work.

since he was first appointed i have said he is "average"
i would like to amend that view and now say he has become clueless
the championship is a very different league now to the days of his "pomp" with Wigan..
he has no idea..
signings have on the whole turned out be dreadful..
i think he will walk if things continue the way they are for much longer (he walked from wigan and derby)..fingers crossed!!! as i doubt our equally clueless chief exec will have the b*ll*x to recommend any decisive action to our elusive chairman..
shambles!

I don't think that any of us are particularly happy with recent results. We all have different tolerance levels and approaches to life in general i.e. glass half empty or half full.Constructive and objective criticism is fair enough and so are suggestions for improvement e.g. we need more pace and width. But those so called supporters that are aready turning on the team and management should be ashamed of themselves.
We are blessed to have an owner to has invested heavilyin our club and a manager who is trying very hard to make things work...it's work in process. Let's see how things are looking in December.

I am struggling to understand the people who say that jewell is doing it wrong and name a team we should use that isn't available. how can sonko play injured? chripswich bold statement, yet safe at the same time, no one will remember it so your safe if wrong and if correct you can say i told you so. your statement is unbackable, and name a team that had a manager for an extended period of time doing crap? i think more often than not time gets results
