Collins Out of Wales Squad With Groin Problem
Collins Out of Wales Squad With Groin Problem
Monday, 3rd Oct 2011 12:18

Loanee Town defender Danny Collins has pulled out of the Wales squad for their Euro 2012 qualifiers against Switzerland and Bulgaria due to a groin problem.

The on-loan Stoke man has returned to Portman Road for treatment on what seems likely to be a minor niggle. Town's next game, at Cardiff, isn't until a week on Saturday.

Meanwhile, striker Tamás Priskin is with the Hungary squad for their final qualifier against Finland in Budapest next Tuesday.

Elsewhere, Fulham keeper Mark Schwarzer has pulled out of the Australia squad due to the back injury he suffered recently, although it appears precautionary and unlikely to lead to David Stockdale's recall.

Hopefully nothing serious or long term, with Sonko he has been a rock in the defence so far.

Obviously as a Welshman I'm a bit worried, but for some reason Collins doesnt feature too many times for us since Speed has been manager (probably why our current defence is so s**t).
Still I'm hoping he will be up and running for the blues next game, because him and Sonks have helped us recover from a very poor time this season.

Collins has been a great addition to the squad and his partnership with Sonko has given an immediate confidence to the entire defence that was badly missing up until their arrival. Carlos has improved as a right back thanks to the certainty now in the middle. At Championship level they are a match for any pairing.
I don't think we'd really be in big trouble if Collins were to miss a game or two however. Damien Delaney would step into the left side position and do a fine job, in my opinion. Sure he was part of a couple of calamities, but that was in a different situtaion where he was the senior partner alongside an inexperienced player, where both were left footed when he was with Smith, in a team lacking in confidence that hadn't really played much together by then.
His partnership with McAuley had worked very well, and although I'd prefer the current pairing, most of us were happy with them last season. I think Sonko's game would suit Delaney as would Ivar's.
Currently we have 4 very decent centre halves, who are 2 right sided and 2 left sided. Despite what some on here think, 30/32 is not ancient, especially for centre halves, although Ivar's injuries are a concern and he is a little older.
I think it's a position where we're in a really good state now, lets just hope we can make Collins a permanent signing in January.
