Jewell: Feels Like We Were Robbed
Jewell: Feels Like We Were Robbed
Saturday, 15th Oct 2011 18:18

Town boss Paul Jewell said he felt that his side had been robbed after the Blues’ 2-2 draw at Cardiff, the Bluebirds' second goal coming via a highly contentious penalty.

After the game, Jewell explained to quizzical reporters how he saw the incident in which the spotkick was awarded by referee Dean Whitestone: “The way I see it, the linesman gave a corner and the referee didn’t give anything.

“Then after a mass of confusion, after the penalty shouts from Cardiff players and supporters, he points to the spot. Don’t ask me how he came to that decision, but he did.

“It was handball against Carlos Edwards, apparently. Rob Earnshaw’s kicked it up against Carlos Edwards, who is about a yard from him. It’s a ridiculous decision, but there you go.”

The Blues boss says his side ought to have sealed the win prior to the spotkick when Jason Scotland was thwarted by Cardiff keeper David Marshall: “After they got the equaliser the crowd has lifted them.

“At 2-1 we should have been 3-1 up. I think they were moaning a bit about our second goal but the linesman put his flag up just to let the referee that the ball had gone over the line, not for offside. There wasn’t even a question of offside.

“I think that riled the crowd a little bit and I just thought at times throughout the game the referee looked a little bit out of his depth.”

Jewell spoke to the official on the pitch at the whistle and revealed what he had said: “Make sure you get your story straight when I come and see you because I know what will happen.

“Referees have got a very difficult job. I have bad days, players have bad days but when they make a decision, not even an instant decision, they’ve had time to think about it and confer, how they get to a penalty from where they are and what they’ve given at first, is beyond me.

“If they had scored a great goal, you take your hat off to them, but we feel a little robbed today because I felt for long periods we were the better team.”

The Town manager said he hadn’t decided whether to talk further about the decision with the referee: “I don’t know what good it will do really. They’ve got difficult jobs to do. He looks a young lad, I don’t know what his history is.

“I think he’s got it wrong and I don’t even see how he’s got it wrong. If someone gets a penalty because someone takes a dive, I can see that, even if he’s got it wrong. I can’t see where that decision’s come from.

“There was a mass of confusion for our goal, then again just before he gave the penalty there was an incident where we thought it was a goalkick and they thought it was a corner and it took an age to get to a decision. It was like Fred Karno’s.”

Jewell was pleased with his side up to the penalty: “Cardiff like to get the ball up to the big lad up front [Rudy Gestede] and we had to try and master that.

“I felt at times he won too many headers but when we got the ball down and passed it we looked a good outfit. We had to dig in in the last 15 minutes.

“The game had a bit of a bitty start, it wasn’t great. But once we got the goal, we grew in confidence, we passed the ball and started to get the full-backs forward. They changed their shape which is a compliment to us again, but I’m sat here a little bit irked that we haven’t got three points.”

The Blues boss says his side suffered no injuries: “One or two are tired, Michael Chopra and Jason Scotland both tired but other than that no, and we kick on again in the morning.”

Cardiff manager Malky Mackay perhaps unsurprisingly saw the penalty differently, although he felt a draw was probably fair: “I think that overall we’re probably both looking at it saying we’re disappointed not to win but probably in the face of it all it looks like a point was probably the right result considering the ebb and flow of the game with both teams dominant at certain periods of the game.

“What’s happened [on the penalty] is Robert Earnshaw’s kept it in and it’s flicked off the outstretched hand of Carlos Edwards. The ball was going to Rudy Gestede and it’s changed direction.

“It certainly wasn’t his hand down by his side, his hand was up in the air when it changed direction. I thought it was a penalty.”

Nevertheless, he agreed that referee Whitestone and his assistants weren’t particularly clear in their intentions during several of the game’s major incidents: “There was probably a lack of clarity from the officials in terms of how they came to the decision, a bit like their second goal when there was a lack of clarity about why the linesman put his flag up rather than running to the halfway line.

“In the end, both decisions were correct, theirs was a goal and ours was a penalty. I also felt that five minutes after our penalty we should have had a penalty when Kevin McNaughton was bundled down in the box.

“Had there not been the decision-making process five minutes beforehand and the amount of players surrounding them, a decision would have been taken.”

I know we were 2-1 up but we were also 1-0 down. Joke of a penalty but a draw was probably fair enough.

Sounds like a fair result. Decisions sometimes go for you - sometimes they don't. We can't blame the referee, albeit it does sound like a poor decision. AS PJ said, if we had have taken our chances then the penalty decision would not have mattered. Also, according to some comments on Suffolk, one of our goals was offside - so swings and roundabouts.

Bottom line is this is a decent away point. But we must now excel at home.

"I think they were moaning a bit about our second goal but the linesman put his flag up just to let the referee that the ball had gone over the line, not for offside. There wasn't even a question of offside."

But if the ball was out surely play should have been stopped anyway?

they mean the ball had crossed the goal line to show it was a goal...... hes not meant to raise his flag in that situation, he should run to the half way line....... but he didnt.......

A win would have been good, but a draw away at Cardiff is decent enough and probably fair in this case. Above all all the stats suggest the team put in another good performance. I've got a good feeling about our next two games.

@jas0999 - Neither of our goals were offside. As the article says, the lino put his flag up to signal the ball had crossed the line, despite that being the incorrect procedure.

It was a very amateur performance from the officials, but a point away to one of our play-off rivals is satisfying enough.

Again, poor officiating. Anfield earlier, Goodison Park two weeks back, today. Referees are ruining the game. Jumping to conclusions all the time, rising to play acting and diving (Suarez, Adam), players surrounding and fans in the stand. Another good result but obviously could've been three points instead of one.

Good to see two strikers scoring anyway, and joint 5th now or thereabouts. I'll happily accept a draw today if we win both upcoming home games, annoying to see Pompey win tonight though.

From what I heard Stockdale deserves a lot of credit today.

Onwards and upwards!

Certainly not at our best for half an hr but from the 1st min until 15 from the end we did boss it without really playing as attractively as the previous 3matches. I think we were all satisfied with a pt at the final whistle as we had become a little ragged. Not sure ill feel the same way once ive seen the penalty decision later.Shame Jason didnt kill the game off at 2-1 but all in all another satisfactory showing which prob deserved more.

Where are all the comments? Five unbeaten now!

Listened to the game on BBC Wales, probably a better commentary. Welsh pro commentary team said we were the better team up to their equaliser with our full backs getting forward. Sounded like a good performance by Town, starting to play as a team not inviduals, something we haven't seen since the days of Joe Royle - COYB

Periods of brilliance. Periods of desperate defence.

We are getting there, but there is a lot to sort out.

An away draw? Very good

We need to play for 90 minutes

Five games unbeaten against tough opponents is very pleasing. Long way to go but we are in the mix which is what it's all about. COYB

A very good result against Cardiff at their home ground. When the games get tougher away from home a point is first class and could well prove vital at the end of the season. Well done to all the lads, hope there will be no injuries,if so wish you a speedy recovery. Well done. COYB

It did have the feeling of being robbed seeing as we went one up and should have added during that period. But, on balance, a draw was fair. We were literally non existent for the final 30 minutes. Faded horrendously.

Quite disappointed by the impact of the subs too. I don't recall JET getting on the ball once. He might as well have not been there. You can't afford to have someone offering so little for so long.

Leadbitter totally was useless today. I have heard from friends on the the way back that Brenner has said he played played well. Leadbitter was an absolute joke. The three others in the diamond played well, no wonder Bowyer had to be
substitiuted, he played well must have been exhausted to have had to cover
for Leadbitter.

Why play is Leadbitter playing and captain he is utterly rubbish - like Norris should head off to lower team team

Can moan as much as we like but just pure bad luck having sub-standard officials refereeing the match...think though that in the long run, these good/poor decisions will even themselves out...

We should be looking up the table. Great 1 to 11. No fear from any team.

Keep the players fit and extend the loan on certain players and we are the team to fear.

Draw fair to day, Leadbitter is the weak link. Bad decision for penalty. It is a great chance for Carson or JET at the top of the diamond - they should take it.

Jewell is doing the business after early reluctance to recognise defensive weaknesses.

No need to boo or cheer Norris on Tuesday.

To now feel a slight disappointment that we could not get all 3 points goes to show the massive progress we are making, 14 of possible 18 points, and if I recall correctly, we were close to winning at boro and now Cardiff.

Having said that, not being able to close these games perhaps an indicator that we need to have that ruthlessness in killing the close games...

Good times nonetheless...

Brenner on radio suffolk was saying Leadbitter was superb! Giving the ball away as usual or just generally useless?

ClassyCranson added 01:04 - Oct 16
Garv - I am big fan of Brenner, he is usually spot on in my opinion. Did not hear what he had to say personally on the radio today.

Leadbitter was sloppy today and gave the ball away needlessly or used it poorly, he is not dyanamic enough to operate at the top of the diamond. Leadbitter was no way superb, thought the rest of the diamond were good.

A point at Cardiff is a good result. As the old Liverpool adeage goes one game at a time - lets deal with Pompey on Tuesday before talk of the Palace game.

The annoyance of the FLS meant we missed the first bit of our counter for Chopra's goal, it seems Leadbitter did well to win the ball for Bullard but crap editing meant we missed how he won it. Again no highlights just goals which is the same old story.

So would you keep Leadbitter in there while still unbeaten with him in the team or put in someone maybe more creative, Carson, JET?

Proud of the boys. Hoping we can sign Danny Collins and Keith Andrews on permenant contracts. Don't forget we still have to get a goalie.
Up the Town! Happier than I have been in many months over here in Canada.
