Jewell Left Feeling Sick After Second Late Defeat
Jewell Left Feeling Sick After Second Late Defeat
Saturday, 26th Nov 2011 18:17

Blues boss Paul Jewell was left feeling “sick” after his side surrendered a 2-1 lead late on for the second week running. The Town manager again cited individual errors as his team conceded twice from set pieces, just as they did at Nottingham Forest a week ago.

Jewell said: “We didn’t play great, it was a nervous performance and in the situation we’re in that’s going to be the case.

“If we could have hung on for the win, it would have been great for the confidence but the goals we’re giving away from set plays and the third one are just beyond comprehension really. Sick is the right word.”

The Blues manager said players weren’t doing their jobs: “If there was never a mistake in a game, every game would end 0-0, but people have got their man to mark and they didn’t, basically. We got away with a couple in the first half as well.

“Individual errors cost us. What we’re trying to do from the throw-in [on the third], I just don’t know. From that, you get the feeling they’re going to score because that’s the way it is with us at the moment.

“We should have seen the last two games out. If we were mentally tough we should have got six points out of the last two games. But at the moment, because our confidence is so low, every time the ball goes in our box we’re nervous.”

Jewell said he brought on Jimmy Bullard late on to try to help see the game out: “We tried to play 4-3-3 and just shore it up a little bit, but we didn’t keep the ball, we didn’t pass the ball really, but even so, the goals we gave away didn’t come from that, they came from people not marking.”

One positive was Daryl Murphy’s performance and goal: “Considering he hasn’t played for a while, I thought Daryl did very well. His goal was great for him.”

The Town manager says skipper Grant Leadbitter is likely to miss out at Burnley on Tuesday, while keeper David Stockdale and Ibrahima Sonko are doubts: “Grant’s got a nasty groin injury, so that was why we had to make that substitution. We tried to put Reece in there but unfortunately we couldn’t keep them out.

“I would have thought Grant would be out for Tuesday. He limped badly into the dressing room so I would have thought so.

“Stocks did his shoulder in training on Monday afternoon. We don’t think it’s too serious but we don’t know if he’ll be available for Tuesday. Richard wasn’t to blame for any of the goals.

“Sonko’s only trained once with the first team [after his hamstring injury], so we’ll have to see how he comes through tomorrow and Monday.

“I think we’ll have to make one or two changes for injuries [at Burnley]. We’ll have to see how everyone is in the morning.”

Reading manager Brian McDermott admitted he wasn’t confident of a victory as the 90-minute mark approached: “I thought it was going to go against us again at 2-1 down with not long to go.

“I thought we started the game really well, the first 20 minutes. We didn’t get the goal we needed in the first half, then we gave a goal away for a set play which was disappointing. We got back into the game, then we gave another goal away that we’re not happy with.

“But I always feel that with the team that we’ve got and with the group of people that we’ve got, we can score late goals.

"When it got back to two-all, there’s a lot of difference between one point and three and we thought the third goal was a quality goal. I’m delighted with the win.”

Collins can f off to Wolves. No problem. Play Delaney when fit. Buy BIG - a centre half who can play & defend, spend money. Big problems for PJ, RK was sacked after a similar run. P1ss or get off the pot.

Coventry, Watford, Forest, Norwich, Hull, Swansea we lost to on the bounce, beat Leicester then went and lost to Forest again after the new year. Whoever it was asking me to prove this OK 6 not 7 but people are forgetting what happened last year and making such stupid statements as 'we were better under Keane', 'Keane wasn't so bad'...do me a favour! Never heard so much tosh in all my life. We havnt yet lost 6 on the bounce with PJ and atleast we are scoring goals! I'd rather lose 3-2 than 1-0 (bore).

Again Jewell had us winning with minutes to go and ridiculous mistakes let us down. What was Edwards thinking when he took that throw in? Laughable, Sunday league players don't throw it square in-field, Wabara asleep loses it and we're short and they score. Not going to say there were two many up because losing the ball where we were was inconceivable. For the first and second as well people not picking up their men (we aren't a big team which doesn't help, Sonko is a massive miss), this is not Jewell's fault, like him or not.

Leadbitter taking some ridiculous stick on here as well. Everyone notices the passes that go wayward, but not the sprinting run back, keeping up with Kebe, winning the ball with a brilliant tackle and injuring himself in the process. He set a good example there as a captain, anyone criticising his work ethic is a monkey! He isn't creative, we know that, but so many of you are calling for a defensive midfield player, and he did that job today, and we defended a lot better today, thanks partly to him. But despite all this, you will all still lambast as an excuse to criticise Jewell for picking him. You are the joke some of you, not Ipswich Town!

We've had worse than this run, so all of you calling for the managers head, MAN UP, realise this happens in football, accept (I know you'll struggle) we have the ability to play well and win games and support this team!

Very rarely do I agree with Garv but I think the post above ^^ is one of the best I've read in a long time. Getting rid of Jewell right now would be expensive and paramount to suicide. Its not just Jewell,- it's all the background staff he's put in place. They would all be "got rid" by the new manager who would then have to take time to contract his own staff and players. Get real people--how many of us wanted Stockdale, Chopra, Bullard, JET, Andrews? We considered these players great signings when we got them (even on loan). Fair enough, Jewell should have doen something about our pitiful defence, but he'll get there. Collins plays one bad game and supporters are calling on him to go to Wolves? Unless we get behind our team and our manager we WILL be GOING DOWN. These defenders that are criticised every weak will only get worse rather than better,-their morale must be shot to pieces. School-Boy/Comical defending? Yes, but we were 2-1 up until the final moments and yes, we played poorly but apart from the last few minutes I thought Reading were worse. We seem to switch off at the beginning and ends of matches for some unknown reason and I don't know if anyone can explain it (Church should have opened the scoring in the first couple of minutes). Leadbitter had one of his best games ever for Town,- give the guy some credit when it's due. Martin and Carson added width (like everyone wanted,as you all wanted the diamond formation scrapped).Wright played well, 2 of the goals were very difficult to stop.
I can't believe that when they scored their 3rd goal some supporters started chanting for Keano again. Sad, really sad. How does that make Jewell feel? (especially as he knows how much Keane was villified??). At least we've stopped constant longball under Jewell and are trying to play football.

It's hard to put your finger on what's wrong here but something is fundamentally wrong with the club.I have said it before that maybe the ME takeover wasn't as good as we all thought? The club is run by non football people who don't understand the game. I recall ME saying when he wanted a new manager he called some contacts..and Clegg obviously hasn't got a clue. They talk about a "plan" but what is it? Off the pitch must surely reflect on it. Players look nervous and unable to express themselves and maybe that's down to the supporters reaction to recent events?
That said it's what the players do when the cross the White line that we see.And again all I see is a lack of energy and creativity. Too many players playing just to collect fat wages at the end of the week.I wonder what they do in training all week. Also some of the players brought in are with out doubt under performing...I refer to Bullard,JET,is Collins really that good ( it's dangerous to sit in row Z ) Leadbitter to name a few.
Big problem is the club is in free fall. See last year we made a small profit based purely on Wickhams sales. This year will be worse as we have nobody to sell! Crowds falling and will continue to fall if this is served up each week.
Relegation is a distinct possibility if something doesn't change and soon. I for one would accept this is we start to build for the future and get in some younger players and use those we already have but this is not the case. So if we go down who will still be here in league 1 .
I think PJ should be given time but please have a long term plan.and please stop telling us how YOU feel! You earn a ridiculous amount of money and people are struggling in these hard times and paying large amounts of money to watch this rubbish.
On a totally random note how comes there was only 1 minute of added time in the first half with two lengthy injuries? Poor poor ref....again

'When was the last time we lost 5 on the bounce?'
Are some of you kidding? Do you not remember Keane last year losing 6/7 in a row around this time? Short memories! This IS NOT worse than Keane! I even heard some d*ckhead chanting his name when the third went in, idiot idiot idiot!

Do you fancy Jewell or something???

Superb post!!!!!!!!! ;)

If Bristol City beat Watford, which is likley with their form, Millwall beat bottom of the table Doncaster and Forest get something out of the game with Leeds. If we lose by more goals than Watford at Burnley we could be in the bottom 3.

Then we play Watford at home, a team we have found it difficult to beat for a long time.

An interesting week ahead.

I can't believe there is some fans on here who are glad Leadbitter is injured? Thats so poor those suporters need to look hard at themselves and ask am I a real ITFC Supporter? Leadbitter has been poor but hasn't the whole team almost? For those players who are under performing week in week out need to be dropped to the bench for a few weeks make them work harder to get into the side. I would give the armband to Andrews on Tuesday night. Big few weeks for all at the club another 2-3 defeats then PJ Will certainly be qustioned if he is the right man to take us forward? SORT IT OUT!

Lousy, Lousy, Lousy defending. Been saying it for years and nobody listens. We could make a compilation and sell it of our horrific defensive blunders. Laughing stock of the championship- our defence. Every striker who plays against us must be hoping for a hatrick.
Jewell, it doesn't matter how good our attack is if our defence is about as watertight as a duck with 6 bullets in it. DREADFUL defending, and what a bad game. Reading played badly but won, sign of the times.
We are in a relegation battle now. Anybody who doesn't realise this now is deluded.
SACK THE DEFENSIVE COACH BEFORE ITS TOO LATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bad set of recent results. Nuff said. time to stop looking at Gils wingers and spend some money on 3 new defenders. if we don't we can enjoy colchester u next season while Norwich are high and mighty in the Premier.
sad to be a supporter of this club, very sad. how the mighty have fallen.
don't know where the rot is at ITFC, but its deep and bad. can't ever see us doing a charlton. get ready for midtable medoicrity for a few years in league 1 with dreams of promotion to the championship.

Our defence will struggle in League 1. Optimistic to think we can be midtable there, its a highly competitive league.
I predict League 1 football followed by struggle against relegation next season. I hope i'm wrong but unless PJ sorts out this mess this prediction is going to come true,

I don't know how many of the people that post on this forum are genuine supporters, personally I've only been to Portman Road the once, being a Somerset boy. I've always been a big fan though, and it seems pretty stupid to be asking for the managers head less than halfway into his first season. I watch the highlights, and read a lot of the reports, and it doesn't often seem like we deserve to lose, apart from the Portsmouth game (where we got 3 points). Just look at what happened to Sheffield Utd, a club of similar size to ours, with the same quality of players, sacked there manager every half season and went down. It never works, no matter who you are, looking for first season success. We need a manager for at least 2-3 seasons, allow a clear philosophy to grow, then if it hasn't worked, and he's had backing then let him go, but not before he's had a fair crack. A lot of genuine supporters may be here, but with a distinct lack of football knowledge.

I've been saying it for months - we have an owner and a chief exec who know nothing about football and have consistently made awful decisions. If I appointed managerial staff of this level of competence, my firm wouldn't exist. Who the hell appoints some-one who's been out of the game for two years?? You might as well appoint me. The club seems now not functioning on any level. Any idiot would look at the Norwich model and follow it but oh no, not the fool Jewell. In fact, let's do the complete opposite with Clegg and Evans' mindless backing. And before anyone mentions it, I don't expect promotion, I just expect not to be embarrassed to support my team and this is genuinely the first time in 35 years that I am really worried. Relegation beckons on this form....

I have stated before & doing so again. Burley & holland people that love this club. Start now give them a few quid build the youth system that was always our strong point with Bryan Clugg in total control of youth policy then in 3 years we will return to being itfc that i love

bluearmy4life added 11:29 - Nov 27
Garv...... I admire your postivity but if we carry on going the way we are we will be relegation material. People can't keep blaming the defence what about are midfield? On paper it's one of the best in the league but the oppostion needs to get past the midfield to get to to the defence?

SeanAnnah - easy for you to have your philosophy when instead of coughing up each week to watch RUBBISH, your money is still in your pocket.

Armchair supporters, and we have many, can always see it differently.
