Jewell Admits Not Many Pluses
Jewell Admits Not Many Pluses
Monday, 28th Nov 2011 07:38

Town boss Paul Jewell admitted that it was difficult to see too many pluses - other than there being plenty of the season still to go and another game at Burnley on Tuesday - after the Blues’ 3-2 defeat to Reading at Portman Road on Saturday, with the club in what he called “a dark place”.

Jewell said: “The pluses I can take are that there are 29 games left and we’ve got a game on Tuesday.

“It’s very difficult at the moment for Ipswich Town people to see any pluses, it’s a dark place we’re in at the minute.

“We have to get out of it, no one’s going to help us out, we have to fight and scrap and try and get a result from somewhere that turns us around.

“It’s not going to be a vintage performance from us at the moment, we’re going to have to nick a win. We should have nicked two wins out of the last two games and the whole table would have looked rosy. We know we’re making it difficult for ourselves.”

The increasingly under pressure boss told his players to start preparing for Tuesday’s trip to Turf Moor straight after the game: “What I’ve said to them is that we’ve got to go again on Sunday.

“Everybody’s culpable, people have got jobs to do, ie picking up people from set plays, and in the last two games they haven’t done them.

“There’s not too much to say other than we’re frustrated, we’ve got to start again on Sunday and look forward to the game on Tuesday because in football there’s no hiding place. You can’t run away from it, it’s there, it’s life and as low as I feel at the moment, I’ll face the music.”

im ashamed to say for the first time ever as a season ticket holder i was looking for excuses NOT to go to the match on saturday....and i found several! Too many shoppers thus nowhere to park and i didnt want to be sitting in traffic after a forty minute drive to Ipswich....cost of petrol....another embarrasing home defeat....sounds like i made the right choice, maybe Jewell will start making the right choices too..... tactics, team selection, buying players or actually taking the blame and doing something about it!!!!!!

Since PJ has been in charge:

- We have lost 5 out of 5: can anyone else think of the last time this has happened to us in the second tier of English football?

- We have conceeded 3 or 4 goals on countless occasions - 5 TWICE and 7 ONCE. The fives were at HOME to newly promoted times and worse still one against Norwich. Unforgiveable.

- PJ at the start of his reign decided to play just one up front at home. This alienated over 6,000 fans who used to go to games under Jim and Roy.

- PJ has relied on loans - and his idea of 'building' a squad is signing has been injury prone freebie on no doubt massive contracts. The loanees will return in January/ the has beens will sit tight taking their money. All in all it's a shambles - why was the defence not addressed in the Summer?

- Results and performances have been even WORSE under PJ than they were under Roy and certainly Jim. That is really hard to believe but TRUE!

- Well into the season and the table doesn't lie. Closer to the bottom than the top 6. Just ONE POINT of relegation.

There can be no excuses - PJ has been here 11 months. It's his team, his tactics, his terribly defensive attitude. We are in SERIOUS trouble and it's PJ's fault. Completely.

I am sorry PJ lovers, but I am really struggling to see what you guys like about this manager - his Derby record was so abysmal that the fans there still blame him for ruining them. When will people wake up and see we are going the same way. ME made a grave mistake - right to sack Roy - wrong to replace him with Paul 'Negative' Jewell.

Jewell must go.

I believe that there internal problems at our beloved Club as how can we be so good for 6 matches and then collapse like a pack of cards. The goal celebrations on Saturday were low key by the players which really says it all. When did ITFC last come out and give us a rip roaring non stop action performance as though their lives depended on it - probably the Arsenal matches. Mr Beattie has allegedly stated that this is the worst squad of players we have had - I don't actually agree with that statement but I think its the state of mind of the players that is letting the Club down but the question is what is causing it. If we lose the next two matches I think PJ may well be leaving the Club one way or another which is sad as he really wants to succeed but is now failing miserably. At the moment I can't see where the next win is coming from - dark dark days indeed.

Paul Jewell being sacked is NOT the right answer.
I am beginning to believe that we have to look at Simon Clegg. He is not a football man, he is a businessman. The endless amounts of signings we could have brought in but have faltered at the last minute simply due to the inept Clegg. I think we need to scrap this "CEO" altogether and bring in a proper, footballing chairman - A certain David Sheepshanks springs to mind.

Paul Jewell is a good manager, needs to be given time. He is an honest man, doesn't go hiding from the media in hard times like these. He says it how it is and deserves a lot of respect for that. Lets get behind the blues and hopefully secure that win tomorrow night, otherwise we are seriously looking downwards and not up.

You cannot always blame age. Wasnt Linford Christe in his 30s doing sub 10 seconds for the 100m , i remember seeing a certain daivid moorcroft do a sub 4 min 1500 m and Gabrisalsse ( however you spell it) doing world record standard marathons and Seb Coe doing a 1.53 mins for the 800 m in his late 30s. So to say pace , fitness etc goes completely is partly true but with correct training it can be kept at a high / competative level

Cornard I don't know about saturday but Chopra was absolutely awful against Forest, didn't run for anything. If anything Scotland's injury and the introduction of Ellington cost us more as he looked far more up for it. I'd be happy to even scrap a draw against Burnley, we just need to escape this losing mentality!

We have made progress under Jewell. if you remember under Keane not only were we conceding, we wern't scoring either. Before now, i remember we had a 5-6 year spell where every fan including myself said we never seem to score enough and that we need a 20 goal a season striker. We've only failed to score in a game 3 times this season, where as this time last year we had gone 6 games without scoring. Not to mention the fact this time last year we had played 19 games, and were on 24 points. We've got 2 games to get 4 points to equal or beat that, including the fact that had we have beaten Forest and Reading, which we would have if it wasnt for individual PLAYER errors, not PJ, as they didnt pick up there men, we'd be 8th, with a game in hand to go up to 5th. I think once we get sonko back we'll look a lot more solid, but i know we cant rely on one player to not be , so i do think we'll need to sign another big no nonsense defender in jan, whether it be permanent or a loan, someone that just gives us that reassurance at the back where we can be confident going into the last 5 minutes knowing that we shouldnt concede. Keep the faith, he'll get it right eventually. Patience is key in football! COYB!

I don't want to say it, I've been a Jewell fan from the start and really thought he was making the correct noises when he came in but it's now looking a sad, sorry state! Is it time for him to go? I know we say give managers time, but he's had a year and although there's been signs of improvement, but at the current time, we're no better than we were a year or two years back. So i'd give him say another 3-5 games and if there is no significant turn around in that period then I'd say he has to go.
Here's one for you all, Magilton anyone? Actually thought he did an ok job compared to what we've had, but hindsight is a wonderful thing and if we'd known back then that Keane and so far Jewell were only going to take us backwards then maybe we wouldn't have sacked him in the first place.
But in all seriousness, who would replace Jewell if he were sacked?

And in the last 2 games we have been 2-1 up with but a few minutes to go. Oh, and can count ourselves unlucky not to have scored more than 2 each time. |The margin between success and failure is thin - we could and should be 6 pts better off, with most twtd'ers hailing a great recovery.
A year ago, we weren't even making chances, and were mostly lucky to score nil.

jas0999, since PJ has taken over:

- He secured 5 wins in a row BEFORE the 5 losses, did Keane or Jim manage that?

- we've conceded goals, yes - you win.

- 6,000 fans? Give me your evidence. Link it to us. Even so, Jewell isn't in charge of ticket prices, which are ridiculous and down to Mr Evans (who hasn't done our fortunes on the pitch since much good since HIS arrival either)

- cresswell, edwards, leadbitter, chopra, scotland, JET, Bullard and Bowyer and sonko are all signed on players. If they perform well we will keep them beyond this season and build. 30 isn't too old to be playing at a high level there are vast amounts of sqauds with still build on 30/31 year olds. I'm pretty sure players such as Parker and Arteta are beyond their prime but possibly still improving. It's about ability, Bowyer was a top quality player for Birmingham before us and Bullard's loan last season saved us from relegation. Who can blame PJ for snapping them up on frees? As for Andrews and Collins, they would have both signed and we'd have built on them if we were performing well. We still might. The promblem is we can't afford to sign all of these players if they ARE past it. What if Andrews had been a flop? At least we wouldn't have been stuck paying his wages for two or three years. There are more levels to this loaning system and I don't think any of our loaned players have joined without Jewell having an intention to buy if they went well, perhaps he couldn't justify the transfer fee to ME in the summer. Also we bought three new centre backs and I think most people don't question Collins and Sonko. Cresswell was a revelation and Edwards has been mostly solid. The leaves Stockdale - who is better than most other people we could have bought and now we have Wright and ALB as cover. What's your point?

- Not true. PJ has a 45% win rate, believe it or not. Both Roy and Jim had 34% and 37% respectively.

- One point OFF relegation, yes. But if we win our GAME IN HAND we will be 16th and four points OFF relegation and four points OFF the play offs. TO me that says it's still in the balance despite our poor form, imagine where we'd be had we held on against forest and reading (which we nearly did), I'll tell you where. A point off of the play offs with a game in hand. There are fine margins in this league and we still have a strong chance of recovering our form and hunting down the play-offs. The table doesn't lie.

- As for the defensive attitude, we had three strikers on for most of the second half last week and I can't remember the last time we played one up front. As for it all being Paul Jewell's fault. Don't you blame the players AT ALL?? Also, in all seriousness, have you not thought that actually since Jim was given that fateful £12mill by Marcus Evans things haven't ever go better?? Open your eyes, everyone here is a culprit, that includes Jewell, Roy and Jim, the board and the players. Jewell has shown signs of turning things around (last season his form was vastly better than Keane's) so I'm willing to give him a chance to rectify his own mistake.

As for Derby. They are three points off of the play offs and were in them earlier this season, was that Paul Jewell's fault too? Of course not. They were simply too awful for the Prem and took a while to recover. Jewell was never going to rescue them from that and it was a blow to his and their confidence once they were relegated and took a long time to fix. We are not in that position.

I'm not a Paul Jewell lover and whether I 'like' him or not doesn't come into it. I liked Jim, but it was time for him to go. Same for Joe Royle when he left. By using such emotive language you sound like a child, stop it.

Okay so I've read your 'facts' and replied as constructively as I can. I've done this a few times and so have others in favour of not sacking Jewell (not lovers). In this I have found only one thing I can't answer, yes we concede too many goals. YOU, on the other hand, don't seem to have read or replied to any of us. Perhaps it's you who needs to wake up a little bit and develop your own stale argument.

If the internet was as popular in the mid-90s as what it is now then Jas0999 would of been calling for the head of Burley when we crashed 9-0 at Man U. Too many X-Factor instant success idiots on the board.

Since Marcus Evans has owned this club our general performance has never waivered from mediocre!

Which goes for the people that sit themselves in the stands week after week. The general zeitgeist of the suffolk people is to be quiet unobtrusive and almost slumberous, Scared to brake the ranks of silence to shout any raw passion and feelings toward the pitch. This laid back lifestyle intrinsicly becomes a detriment to any players that come to suffolk to be fired up and passionate for success.

The Ipswich fanbase are under a numbed spell of which they are unaware.. how can they brake it and become a potentially 31k strong army i don't know.. maybe becoming the spark yourself instead of waiting for someone on the pitch to give it to you.

her's a start..

WAKE UP.. STAND UP.. and then be F*CKING COUNTED!

As much as people would like to see him go now I think he will be given until the Barnsley game to see what he can do,another debacle on t.v and he will be gone in time for another wonder signing by Evans and Clegg.

Just having a look around and after Magilton was sacked a 10/1 bet for the job was Warnock, many including myself may not like the bloke, but he does a good job where he goes and it could have been a totally different situation here now.
