Sonko Could Return to Face Bogey Side Watford
Sonko Could Return to Face Bogey Side Watford
Thursday, 1st Dec 2011 14:34

Central defender Ibrahima Sonko is in line to return for the Blues when bogey side Watford visit Portman Road on Saturday. The Senegalese international has trained for a week after recovering from his recent hamstring injury and was on the bench at Burnley on Tuesday.

Manager Paul Jewell says the 30-year-old could be back against the Hornets, who Town have failed to beat in their last 13 meetings: “He hasn’t done a lot of training as everyone knows. Since he had his latest hamstring injury at Millwall he’s had a good week’s training under his belt and he will come into contention.

“The goals we’re conceding are a major concern for us. You obviously aren’t going to win matches conceding three goals and we’ve conceded threes, fours, fives and sevens this season.

“It’s been a major concern for us but I felt when Danny Collins and Sonks were playing well we were getting results and he’s been missed.”

The Blues boss revealed that his decision to substitute Daryl Murphy just before the break at Turf Moor wasn’t due to injury: “That was tactical. He had a bit of a tight hamstring because he hadn’t played for a while and he played on the Saturday. It was a bit tight but that was tactical. He will be in contention on Saturday.”

He confirmed that skipper Grant Leadbitter will again be unavailable: “He’s got a little tear in his groin and will miss out, as will Richard Wright, who pulled pec muscle in training on Monday, so he’ll be out for a week to 10 days.

“I don’t know how long Grant will be out. I spoke to him earlier and he was a bit sore yesterday but it’s a little bit easier today.

“I don’t really like putting time-frames on things because sometimes players recover quicker and sometimes they take longer. It’s a day by day thing but he won’t be fit for Saturday."

David Stockdale could return after missing the last two matches with a shoulder problem: “He did a light session this morning with the goalkeeping coach and he’s going to do a little bit more this afternoon.”

If the on-loan Fulham man doesn’t make it, Arran Lee-Barrett will continue in goal, having impressed at Burnley despite conceding four goals: “I thought he made some good saves. He was exposed quite a bit on Tuesday night and he did OK. He was one of the very few to come out with any credit on Tuesday night.”

Damien Delaney remains on the sidelines having recently undergone surgery on a stressed fracture to his foot.

What has been proved is that Ingimarrson is not up to scratch and Delaney's injury was untimely. He is not as bad as everyone thinks.

Smith and Ainsley are League 1 at best.

We need to BUY not loan a decent centre back in the next transfer window.

No point Sonko even pulling on that shirt UNLESS he is 100% fit - like he wasn't against Palace or Milwill. But agreed Ingarmarsson is too slow, too old, too small. Shocking infact

think we need sonko. we had our best run of games while sonko was at the back with collins. We have just had our poorest run of games . and sonko has been missing for the most part from what i can tell. Hope his return see town win the winning habit once more.

''PJ'' play 3 centre halfs, cresswell and edwards as wing backs with three tight midfielders leaving the two up front of Chops and murph. stick with it till xmas bet we will pick up points!! we are too exposed in the box at the mo! collins has good left foot, Ivar reads the game well with a good right foot, sonko to command the box, all of them wont be strecthed due lack of pace. come on give it a go, cannot be any worse than we are now.

the only surpise here is that Jewell said Murphys substitution was tactical.....i wasnt aware there were any, didnt seem evident unless Jewells instructions were," dont chase back, give the ball away and make the fans who travelled all that way suffer a bit more!"...... well done, the "players" do listen to you after all!

Sonko has indeed done well - but he misses more than he plays. We need a consistent pairing at CB - even the biggest PJ lover can surely see that he neglected to address this in the Summer? Instead - we had to go out after the window closed - and signed Sonko - who misses as many as he plays and a loanee who will go back to Stoke mid December. PJ's failure to bed in a new pairing in the Summer is a terrible error and one he should pay for with his job.

I said Ingirmarsson wasn't up to it after his debut against City. Why has it taken Jewell this long to work that out, it was fairly evident he was past it back in August as unfortunately is Kennedy.

If Sonko doesn't play we may as well wave the white flag at the moment and how bout putting some youth into that midfield, youth that hasn't gone out on loan...which leaves Hyam!

was Bowditchs hatrick that long ago !!!
Stockdale and Sonks will greatly add confidence at the back and hopefully cut out some of these poor easy goals we are conceding especially from set pieces as Sonko was headering everything before his injury .
And JAS Keano couldnt find us a left back in his whole time and got rid of a decent right back (Wright) and told our best centre back Mac he could leave which is what he ended up doing so dont fully blame Jewell for our lack in defensive options ,he has had one transfer window so far and signed a good left back ,a good centre back and a good loan centre back ,hopefully in the next window he will get a right back and sign Collins and have Delaney as back up .Although Delaney and Kennedy are really injury prone and miss more than they play ,who signed them ?

Personally been more impressed with Ingimarsson than Collins. Collins definitely cost us at least a goal in each of the last 3 games but we need to find a pair that play together so if its Collins-Sonko then so be it

I cant help it but I will be going to PR full of optimism for a good performance and result - I really cant believe that they will play as bad again - I think with Sonko back and hopefully getting back to basics with a 442 formation. HOWEVER if it goes bad againn then PJ will be on very thin ice. If the players let him down again then you would have to conclude that he has 'lost the dressing room' - however I expect to see players sweating blood for us all - COYB

Defending can only happen when the other team has the ball, what ever position you play if your team are not in possession of the ball you are a defender, our back line are having a mare but they are increasingly being put under pressure by inability/lack of effort/ignorance of instruction/abandoned duty or all of the above, from the rest of the team infront of them. It would appear that if we have 60% overall possession in a game we are only interested 60% of the time. All of the above sounds completely obvious, but it appears that the obvious is being severely overlooked, the basics aren't there.

No Leadboots at Burnley and that produced the most inept, gutless performance seen for a long time. Perhaps that should tell us something. Happy days ? I don't think so.
