Jewell: I Won't Walk Away From Town
Jewell: I Won't Walk Away From Town
Friday, 2nd Dec 2011 08:35

Town boss Paul Jewell says he has no intention of walking out on the Blues, despite the current run of six successive defeats. The Liverpudlian says the situation is different to his time at Derby County, where he resigned — coincidentally after a 1-0 defeat by Town — when he felt the owners no longer had faith in him.

Jewell dismissed the suggestion that he had thought about making a similar exit from Portman Road: “No, not at all. I can see a situation where I get the sack because we lose the next however many games, but I spoke to the owner [on Wednesday] and he said he has great belief in me as a manager and that I’ve got to have that belief in myself, and I have.

“When I was at Derby I just felt I couldn’t take that any further. There was so much going on off the pitch, but I don’t feel the same here. I feel hugely disappointed with our last six results but I don’t feel as if I can’t turn it around.”

The Blues boss says that while the chief executive at Derby wanted to keep him, the Rams’ owners no longer believed in him: “Adam Pearson was terrific and I asked Adam, if they could afford to sack me, would the owners sack me? He said he wouldn’t but the owners said that if they could have afforded to they would, so that’s why I walked away.

“[I don’t want to be at a club where] people are only keeping you because they can’t afford to get rid of you, I want to be working for Marcus Evans because he’s got belief in me not because can’t afford to sack me, which I’ve got to tell you with my contract is not the case here.

“That’s why I walked away at Derby. Staying around because I’m getting paid well isn’t what I’m about.”

He says he finds life very different at Portman Road: “I just think that off the pitch at Derby there was a lot of politics going on. There’s no politics here, there’s Marcus Evans.

“At Derby we went down with the lowest points total and there was a big black cloud hanging over it. I know it’s a brilliant football club Derby County, similar to here - great tradition, big support - but there was always something going on behind the scenes.

“When I asked the question to Adam, he said he wanted me to stay but the Americans said that if they could afford to make a change they would do. That’s why I went.

“The relationship between the owner and the manager is the most important thing at any club. If the owners haven’t got confidence in you, there’s only one way that’s going to happen and rather than wait around to get the sack, I thought it was best for everyone’s interest that I went.

“At the moment I won’t consider walking away [from Town] because I believe it’s too good an opportunity for me to walk away from.”

Magilton was sacked for getting us to 9th place. Jewel is a hero if he keeps us in the Championship. How is that part of the PLan?

Clegg said: "We've not achieved the aspirations we've had as a result of that investment and while everyone inside the club takes a degree of collective responsibility, ultimately the responsibility rests on the shoulders of the manager."

Well you have my support for another 2 games. If we lose the next two you have to go. Time to really shape up those poor performing players drop them if the heart is not in it.

Just get the defence sorted out. I know injuries don't help but if you don't ship goals so easily confidence will return. This squad have proved they can play. West Ham said that we were the best team they'd played this season. Those players though have to take more responsibility it seems to me, individually and collectively. They're the ones on the pitch. No professional team should get tonked so frequently irrespective of who is managing them - unless they just won't play for the manager. If that's the case they are only letting themselves, the club and the public down. It seems to me we need a real leader on the pitch to galavanise these players. A Dave Mackay type character giving it to them.

Paul Jewell has brought some very good players to this club. Now he has got to make them perform ! Not in favour of sacking him , as has already been said we are all in this together, anyone thats wants a change of manager after six bad results is "supporting" the wrong club. C.O.Y.B.

PAUL JEWELL IN. Well said Mr Jewell

Why are you guys saying Paul Jewell out..are you guys stupid? Do these so called fans know what could happen at this stage if we get rid of the Manager? It would destroy us right now! These so called fickle fans are like a plague, disease or a bad rash you can not remove, you guys seem to put all of your time and efforts in berating the current manager, when you could be on the terraces shouting support at your team. Yes you know who you are! Most probably you will have your bed sheets on display that you brought from Primark with those notorious words written in crayon, charcoal or the flip chart marker you stole from work. Those of you who do protest will only do it as a shameless "Look at me" exercise to get attention and to make up the fact you only have 2 friends on Facebook.

OK..all be it there are some players that do need a big kick the ar*e, but aren't you forgetting that some of these teams in the championship are just simply better than us!

Good Luck Saturday Town I am backing you all the way.

Ipswich 'Til I Die.

i remember the john duncan era,i went to nearly every game,1987,to 91,but this is worse,i never tthought id say it!no atmosphere, very dull type of footbal offered.at least then even with crap like harbey, and cheatam ect .,we very rarely got thumped. like we do now.and at least hovered around 12th or a bit higher.this is without doubt the poorest standard of football ive ever seen (consistantly),in my 35 years supporting this club.

I said on Wednesday that if we lose v Watford then he has to go. The number of goals conceded is v poor. I've changed my mind as it was a knee-jerk reaction to another four goals conceded. I reckon most most sane ITFC fans want him to succeed and turn this around. We are Ipswich Town and we stick by people. Come on Jewell, earn your money and give us a reason to sing our hearts out for the lads. Up the Town

i've said it before and i'll say it again. PJ inherited an awful squad of players at the end of contracts or simply not good enough and had to make big changes. He did this by picking up as many experienced heads as he could with the resources available along with a couple of decent signings (Chopra and Cresswell) and one gamble - JET (who on first glance looked promising) - None of us know for sure who he wanted to bring in and maybe failed to agree a fee with.

We all wanted Bullard back at the end of last season. We got our wish.

On paper we have a very strong team that should be competing in this league and i agree with a previous post that maybe the plan was to add youth from the Academy in the second half of the season.

Things have not worked out yet but changing manager now would put us back to square one. A load of players out in Jan, a load more in, another period to bed in and another season wasted.

There are lots of points available over the coming weeks and there is always one team that makes a late run for the play offs.

Lets not panic yet! When we beat Boro and West Ham away we all thought we were going up. Cant have become a bad team overnight! Just having a blip

Think that PJ will turn things around.Although most of his signings leave me puzzled.Jet a complete waste of money,Bullard not interested this season, last season just wanted to impress enough to get a contract.Bowyer passed it. Ingarmarrson to slow and stands off his man to much.Andrews no better than we already have. Chopra off field issues. The only success Cresswell and to a lesser extent Murphy.

There was a worse run under Burley but they were not his players.
These are Jewells players and the team and squad is a shambles. It is alright saying don't change the manager but he must be judged by what is happening on the pitch. On Tuesday night we were pathetic in every department with mistakes happening that were the same against Peterborough. Jewell has had 3 months to sort out the hole in our defence and the letting the midfield jog past ours to score and FAILED and before that had 6 months to buy a centre back - FAILED, I could go on.
I see no progress at all, he has signed 11 players and talks about looking for a formation- Christ!

I am optimist but also a realist and no matter how many people write on here about supporting Jewell - The evidence is that he is continually failing and if this goes on we should get rid.

Please can someone list the positives of the last 10 months for me.

If we'd held on against Forest & Reading we would be 3 points off play-offs with a game in hand = happy fans. Fine margins. A conveyor belt of managers rarely works. If he still has the dressing room then he should remain at the helm.

The only chance we have and it was the same with keane is if it snows like hell on Saturday!
In normal conditions there is no team we can beat in this division and we lost to Northampton and Canbridge held us to a draw.
