Town to Receive Rhodes Windfall?
Town to Receive Rhodes Windfall?
Thursday, 29th Dec 2011 15:29

Town’s January war chest could receive a boost with West Ham reported to have offered Huddersfield £3 million for ex-Blues striker Jordan Rhodes. The controversial deal which took the 21-year-old frontman to West Yorkshire in the summer of 2009 included a sell-on clause which if the currently quoted figures are close to being correct would take the overall fee Town achieved for the Scotland international close to £1 million.

The Terriers are reported to have turned down the Hammers' offer with manager Lee Clark recently stating his club’s determination to hold on to their star man despite reported interest from Manchester United, Celtic and innumerable other sides: "Jordan doesn't have a value - the chairman will not sell. He has stated that his money is better in Jordan that in the bank.

"The lad doesn't want to leave, which is just as important. We dealt with the issue weeks ago, because we knew he would be hot property. Promotion is more important to the chairman than pounds."

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce has subsequently confirmed that his club has made an enquiry but no more than that: "Jordan Rhodes has only been an enquiry, not an offer or a bid by any stretch of the imagination.

"And we have had a straightforward 'absolute no', 'not for sale' from Huddersfield Town so that's out of equation. That was just an enquiry to see what the situation was and nothing more than that."

While other interested parties may now show their hand, Allardyce says the money which Huddersfield are likely to view as a fair price for Rhodes would be beyond West Ham: "He is the main man for them to get them out of that division. This young lad is their main goalscorer.

"I suppose if the bid was big enough they would have to think about it, but I don't think we have that sort of money."

The Blues are understood to already have received more than £600,000 from the Rhodes deal which included several clauses based on both the player and the club reaching milestones, plus the sell-on which is believed to be in excess of 10% of the profit Huddersfield would make if they agree to sell the son of former Blues keeper-coach Andy.

No chance of Jordan Rhodes ever wanting to come back to this club. Forget it.

You got my point in your second post!

We wait to see if he can score as many in the Championship.

Still only reported that W Ham have made a £3m bid.

League game lost 7-1 to a team in the cork u 16 league. we regrouped worked hard & met the same team in cup final at turners cross in cork won 1-0. Thats with same team. Work hard & give the kids a chance it works

Good luck jordan some of us knew you would make it a class goal scorer when you were here but always played second fiddle to wickham lets see who has the career - under the current management you would not get a look in anyway he would not know a decent player if his life depended on it

irishtim - absolutely right - personal experience myself along the same lines, many times. If a young player has the raw essentials, and that's not too difficult to spot, GOOD COACHING is then so important and essential.

My concern, and opinion, is that this Club no longer has this commodity - which it once had in abundance.

Well if he moves that will be £3 to spend in Jan instead of £2.50.

I agree, if Rhodes had stayed than Wickham probably would still be waiting for his chance. The club sold Rhodes (his dad, GK coach, had left previously) with a better prospect in the wings. Good bussiness all round from the club.
Jordan needed to move to progress at the time and he has made the most of it in fairness to him, maybe if he had stayed he would have drifted away like bowditch

h32. coaching from the bottom up is essential. Bryan clugg needs to be brought back to itfc. He inspired me when coaching . Lets work with youth & move forward. I love itfc.

Hey Tim,
good to see another irish Blues fan!
When did u know Bryan? Did he inspire u directly or indirectly?
My fav player is Matt Holland as u probably guessed!
Looking forward to Poland 2012!! What I wouldn't give to have Andrews and Holland lining out for Ireland in midfield at the Euros!!

I look forward to Rhodes moving on to a Championship club to see if he can indeed cut it at this level. I sincerely hope he does and wish him luck.

However, for those who said it was a mistake to see Jordan - time will of course tell - BUT the CLUB at the time made it clear - it was either Wickham or Rhodes. we kept Wickham - he proved himself at Championship level and we sold him for over EIGHT MILLION POUNDS. Not a bad decision to keep him was it? However, there was clearly an argument to keep both - but ME wanted to cash in on one and at the time the offer on the table was for Jordan.

I wish the guy luck and hope he does well - but based on cash - clearly keeping Wickham was the right decision (i.e. over 8 million pounds compared to 3 million).

p.s. we have yet to spend the Wickham cash - so the money from the Rhodes 'windfall' is pointless.

To H32, you're saying all those that doubted him should eat humble pie, but he has scored goals at League 1 level, not Championship or Premiership. Do you remember Beckford who not so long ago was scoring goals for fun in League One and has since failed in the Premier League and last time I checked he wasn't doing too much for Leicester? You may have aslo forgotten that we sold Wickham for £8M plus, which may reach £13M if all the clauses are triggered. Maybe Keane and Clegg saw Wickham as the better prospect and decided to sell Rhodes to benefit Wickham, in which case their decision was justified as the fee for Wickham was much greater than anything that Huddersfield will get for Rhodes. If he comes into the Championship and scores 10-15 goals between now and the end of the season, and maybe 20+ next year (in the Championship) then maybe the club will have to admit it made a mistake in letting him go, but don't lecture people on reading up on football before seeing how Rhodes does at this level. Another question you might want to ask yourself is why was Huddersfield the best option he had? When Wickham was in his last season at Town we had rumours of Liverpool, Arsenal, Spurs, Sunderland etc etc scouts watching him every week. We didn't get that with Rhodes, maybe because many of the other managers couldn't see the talent that you're talking about. No disrespect but I won't be taking advice from you over what you think the latest promising young talent is.

Out of all the horrible things that have happened to ITFC over the years the sale of Jordan Rhodes is the one that annoys me the most.

The football club didn't need to sell Jordan Rhodes, it made the decision to sell the lad. The club supported Keane and serious funds were found not only for Priskin but for Leadbitter and Martin over that summer of 2009. We got about £400k for Rhodes at the time with add ons, which look likely to take the fee to over £1million. Those 3 Keane purchases cost in excess of £5 million and that's not taking into account the huge signing on fees and wages.

Increased competition for Wickham from Rhodes would have been ideal for both and the club. Getting rid of Bryan Klug around that time was the biggest loss to the football club, as virtually every football club in the land want a Bryan Klug.

As for the Wickham cash, the latest set of accounts for the club show it is long gone - largely plugging the cost of overpaid ageing players who haven't done enough to deserve a fraction of it.

Ipswich get back to basics and back the youth system properly, it used to be and should be the foundation of the football club.

I can't believe anyone buys the theory that we had to sell Rhodes in order for Wickham to develop. What is the point of having an owner with hundreds of millions of pounds, yes the ability to get players perhaps other teams could not afford is a luxury. However in my opinion the most important reason to have money behind the club is to stop the Rhodes situation happening, great prospect, why the hell would we take the £500,000+, surely we didn't need it! Should never have been sold, could have sent him out on loan again if he wasn't in immediate first team plans and depending on the situation with a view to a permanent deal at some stage.

The whole thing just seemed like a situation you find yourself in on 'Football Manager'. Sounds ridiculous, but it just felt like a case of, I am the new boss, don't really know who this kid is, I want to buy a load of guys I know, we may as well get rid of him!

get you with your curses! rhodes made space for wickham who we sold for around 10 million, the MISTAKE was to sell rather than loan him to Uddersfelt

I curse the man who sold that young striker.

for those with a crysal ball, just a reminder - Jordan still hasn't done it on a regular basis in the championship or the premier league - ie the boy has POTENTIAL
time will tell if he is a Bowditch or a Bent (and the same can be said about Wickham)

airliner - you obviously cannot identify a 'natural goalscorer' when you see one - enough said.
