Jewell: It Was a Stonewall Penalty Wednesday, 11th Jan 2012 22:50
Town boss Paul Jewell slammed the officials’ failure to award his side a spotkick when Steven Caldwell felled Lee Martin inside the box minutes before Birmingham's last-gasp winner at St Andrew's. Referee Rob Lewis wasn’t well sighted but assistant Amy Fearn was better placed to see what looked a clear foul
Jewell said: “Although the referee didn’t have a very good view, the lineswoman, or whatever she's called, had a great view - it was a stonewall penalty and a sending off. You’ll have to ask her why she didn’t give it. It was a stonewall penalty.
“I asked the referee at the end but there was the wall of silence. But it’s happened, I don’t know why it’s happened because I don’t even think it was a debatable decision, it’s a stonewall penalty.”
Jewell is likely to face scrutiny regarding his criticism of the female official with some newspapers misquoting an early exchange during the post-match press conference.
A reporter asked the Town boss, "I think everyone to a man thought it was a penalty, what's your view?" with the Blues manager responding, "Unfortunately to every man, but not a woman."
Jewell was generally pleased with his team, aside from Nikola Zigic’s two goals: “We defended resolutely, they had a couple of opportunities but we had some good situations on the break that we didn’t make the most of - balls flying across the box.
“The players’ effort was unstinting but the two goals we gave away were bad goals, but in between that there were a lot of good points.”
He felt his team deserved a point and despite the setbacks need to remain resolute and results will then come: “We do need a break but we’ve got to keep going, no one’s going to give us anything for nothing.
“We’ve got to keep going ourselves. We should have had a penalty tonight, we should have got at least a point out of the game.
“It’s easy to feel sorry for yourself, you’ve just got to try and keep going, keep working hard and hope that something does turn your way. If we play like that in the coming games, we’ll win more than we lose.
“We’re in the situation we’re in because we haven’t defended well enough for long enough periods in games. Our concentration is why we’ve conceded a lot of goals late on. Zigic is a handful at 6ft 7, 6ft 8 but it’s just so disappointing that we’re conceding goals like we have tonight.”
Jewell praised his team’s spirit with the 569 travelling fans applauding them at the whistle: “The effort was there, the supporters clapped the players off at the end, it was a terrific following from them again.
“It’s a hard luck story and you don’t want to be doing hard luck stories. We’ve conceded in the 92nd or 93rd minute and it does become psychological sometimes.”
He says Jason Scotland and Grant Leadbitter should be fine despite picking up minor injuries: “Jason’s all right, we’ve got a couple of knocks. Grant got a knock, Jason got a kick when we were on the attack, so he had to come off but I think he’ll be OK.”
Jewell says his mind now moves on to the task of lifting his team for Saturday’s game against Blackpool: “It’s not easy but you have to, we’ve got another game on Saturday. There’s no point in moping about. We’ve got to take the positives out of the game tonight.”
Birmingham boss Chris Hughton, who says he didn’t see the penalty incident, was pleased that his side kept going and grabbed another late goal: “The late, late show again. If you score late in the game it shows we’ve got enough character and resilience in the team to want to protect this very good home record that we’ve got, and grateful and delighted for Nikola for both goals.”

and a big " NO THANKS" to warnock, be careful what you wish for, if Jewell is to be replaced, ( admit i am losing faith here) would be nice to see someone with true town commitment, who knows the town way, if it is going to be a long term plan then lets get in a young manager and do this properly... Russell Osman, b4 you lot start saying he is untried, imho its exactly what we need, not a has been like our players... a young fresh approach..COYB

I'm hoping the south stand turnstiles are newly painted and the ground is all ship shape for Saturday so we can see what Captain Clegg has been doing this week. That apart I can't think of much else to look forward to on Saturday really. PJ will still be here and our team of misfits will probably give away silly goals and we will be nearerbto relegation

No warnock dont think he is any better than Jewell. Not sur what the answer is anymore. Why is it in any football match one manager always see the incedent and the other never does

11 defeats out of 14 and staring relegation in the face. Those stats say it all. Probably the worst Ipswich manager we have ever had who is now starting to publicly mouth off at officials. Rules are rules and we should abide by them. Sometimes it goes against us, and sometimes it goes for us. I think the likelihood of st ledger joining us is getting more remote as Leeds are well in the running now. 2 awful goals to add to our scrapbook of shameful goals conceded this season. I am ashamed to support this team.

ME you have to act now and get rid of Clegg the clown and Jewell the joker otherwise we will be playing in League 1 come August !! Put your Big Boy pants on - man up - and make the decision with the best interests of the club and the supporters.

Still dont believe that we cant get a right back who is better than Edwards, thought David Wright was average, Voltz and Rosenior look quite good now lol. Feel Edwards is doing his best for a play who would be better used on the right wing and feel he should be push for that place by the young Carson, have Martin on the left with Murphy up front with Chopra or Scotland. Jet has now gone 5 games without a goal so does not look the answer, last night was the first time that Scotland and Jet started a match together, so they will never have a great understanding maybe in time but I think we need to stick with the same front two for a bit

This may not sound very politically correct but let's faceit, what on earth do women know about football? Answer: very little. And this desperate attempt to get women onside in the game is destined to cause more controvery than ever. They got rid of female commentators on t.v. because they sounded like children and now they have found another way into the game and it will cost us dearly because they haven't got a clue.

Lets be honest here people. If it wasnt for Barnsley throwing that game away which clearly we should have been 3-0 down at half time. And ALB saving us many times against Derby at home which we were lucky to hang on to a 1-0 win. We would have a been in the bottom three by now having lost the last 14 games on the trott!!! Its complete garbage that we get served up every single match! We are nailed on to go down this season, we cant score, cant defend, cant attract any quality players here, cant keep a clean sheet and cant seem to play to the final whistle. We have a owner who in my eyes does not care one bit about us fans or the club. he is in it to make money. We have a CEO who quite franky is the most cluless man to have ever stepped foot into Portman road (And we have had a few) We have a manager who was out of the game for over two years before coming here and my god does it show! The fans are leaving in their hundreds each month, we are kept in the dark and are treated like s**t most of the time with the high prices etc. I am lucky and old enough to have remembered to Robson era. I was a young lad when we won the FA cup and UEFA cup but i can still remember those days, I can remember the John Lyall days and the teams he produced, I remember the Burley days on being in the top six season after season playing some fantastic matches with some brilliant players. the play-off final, the players and sheepshanks dancing and singing on the cornhill steps. Will we ever see those days ever again at Portman road?? Under the current set up? Simple answer...NO!!

Legend. Those were the days, hey? We used to 'ave to get up out of shoebox at twelve o'clock at night and lick road clean wit' tongue. We had two bits of cold gravel, worked twenty-four hours a day at mill for sixpence every four years, and when we got home our Dad would slice us in two wit' bread knife.

Been trying to keep away from it all for a bit - too depressing... Is that prat Jewell still manager of my precious club? Oh well, at least he's still trotting out the same kind of crap about why we lost this time - he's consistent, if nothing else...

Wonder if Warnock is still down in Cornwall driving around in his tractor [sky sports news, Tuesday] Loose against Blackpool on Saturday [proberly] and jewell will have to be gone, Listened to the game on 5 Live extra last night sounds like we done ok and Birmingham were poor but jewell still could not see the potential to get an away win and brought on Ellington before Chopra, clueless. i will be forever blue, COYB.

The penalty incident in my view is another attempt to paper over the cracks (in our case, in the defence). I dont understand why, Mr Jewell is still the town manager after so many poor performances and heavy embarrassing defeats. This is NOT the team he inherited, its his team, no more excuses, its time for change now before its too late. The days of giving a manager time are long long gone, whether we like it or not its a money game these days. Ive been listening to talk sport this morning however and the news reporter is intimating that Jewell is a sexist regarding the pen incident....

Sid the Sexist OUT!!! We need a manager who can organise a team to defend. All PJ's teams down the years have set their stall out to out-score the opposition. With so much pace around these days, you have to have mobile defenders who are organised. Either PJ has to prioritise this area, or leave the building before we are relegated.
dirtydingusmagee added 09:21 - Jan 12
stonewall penalty it may have been, but thats 1 shyte result of 11,PJ is doing exactly as RK did by failing abysmaly and not or refusing to admit it, ''just hang on in till im pushed''. This has to be or at least match the worst state the club as been in for many years, after next game [unless something miraculous happens] we will be waiting for the trapdoor to open .I was glad to see Keane go, but i feel worse now than when he was in charge.Black kit last night, Black days ahead.

For fek sake it is LOSE not LOOSE. And when did women and men become different species? That is the ultimate racist comment? By the way Jewell cannot see what he is doing or he would have saved his future chances by getting out when the slide started not now when he will never work again!
