O'Connor Leaves Blues - Updated Friday, 20th Jan 2012 11:05
Left-back or midfielder Shane O’Connor has left the Blues after his contract was terminated by mutual consent. O’Connor, whose deal was up in June, was linked with a move back to his native Ireland with Shamrock Rovers earlier in the week.
The Cork-born player tweeted his goodbyes to fans and revealed the Blues prevented him from moving in the close season: "Thank you to all the Ipswich Town fans for your support! Sorry to be leaving but couldn't keep going on this way and not playing football.
"Or even been giving the chance to play! Although might have to look for an opportunity now [seeing] as I was stopped [from] going last summer."
O'Connor was on trial at Crawley in pre-season and was offered a six-month deal. Previously it had been reported that the player turned down the switch rather than that Town had blocked it. The Irishman suggests he also had other options.
On Facebook he dismissed rumours that his lack of involvement over the last year was down to his attitude: "I would just like to clear up that I never had off-field problems, the manager just didn’t give me a chance but I always gave 110% every day. I have very fond memories here!”
Republic of Ireland U21 international O’Connor spent time on loan at Port Vale before Christmas but failed to make an appearance for the League Two side and was recently on trial at Southend.
The ex-Liverpool trainee made 15 starts and seven sub appearances for the Blues after winning himself a deal at Portman Road in 2009 after asking fellow Corkman Roy Keane for a trial.

What I saw of him, he looked a prospect, but the facts speak for themselves. Couldn't break into the Port Vale side*, wasn't offered anything from his trial with Southend, and Crawley only offered a 6 month deal. Perhaps he just flattered to deceive. * What we were doing loaning out a player to get experience only to see him sit on the bench, I do not know! We should have dragged him back like everyone does to us.

now why is Kennedy getting stick? i personally thought he started well for us in a defensive mid role, also he was vocal on the pitch, we are still quite a quiet team....need more natural leaders out there tbh........... but anyway, best of luck Shane, shame you didnt get more games as IMO i thought you looked a decent prosepect and possibly could of made the left side of the team your own........

It always amazes me that the less some players actually play, the better their legend becomes. Shane O'Connor is an average player and not someone we will live to regret losing. Yes he played well against Leicester in the snow, but apart from that his performances were average at best and outside of that he was not considered good enough to make the first team by either Paul Jewell or the manager who signed him. I wish him well at lower league level.

Players out 3 players in 0 (sounds like most of our games)

What a sorry excuse for a club. I simply despair. How much have we paid to get shot of players? I feel sorry for O'Conner - clearly a decent RK signing - yet we pay him off. Healy - given a new deal by PJ - put paid up after PJ fell out with him. Ingimmarsson is a classic example as to why PJ should not be ITFC manager. Then there is Priskin - why pay him off? Not a good signing - but why?????? Re those defending Ellington - you are deluded if you think he is on peanuts. Basically, the last four seasons is enough time to judge - he was never a good signing - a striker who can't score goals. PJ's mate. No more no less. PJ OUT!

jas0999 If they weren't going to play again until the end of the season and nobody else would pay anything for them it makes sense to pay them off and save money. ME and SC are businessmen, you don't for 1 minute think they were paid their wages up until their contracts ended do you? Priskin had his deal lined up in Russia and the only way the club would release him to go was for him to take a big cut in his contract termination pay off. As you well know no other club was interested in paying anything for him. Hence ITFC save money and his new Russian club pay him a signing on fee.

Shame, I always thought he put in a good shift, thought we would see him now and again to give Creswell a rest, was the best player on the books in the snow :-)

Good luck lad. Thought you could do a job for us & never let us down when in the first team. Unlike the other 2 contract terminations I'm sad about this one. Hope you have better luck with your next club. You can make it, work hard and believe. Be lucky

There will be a lot of footballers struggling to find clubs come the summer. With clubs being forced to keep their wages bill to no more than a fixed % of their income and the continued harsh economic climate where people will decide to ration their feast of live football the game will slowly start to come to terms with the fact that clubs can not gamble to try and maintain their future premiership ambitions. Part and parcel of the more generous parachute payments for relegated clubs is for them to come to terms with running down contracts and not reinvesting this money on a further assault of a quick return which could end up being a catastrophic gamble. Credit to town to coming to some decisions on players contracts now and providing them with opportunities to move on and perhaps get a new club before the madness starts in the summer. There will be times when we have to let players go to make room for others and provide opportunities for younger players at the club. Shane has had his chance and unfortunately not been able to secure a place here or elsewhere as yet. But the reality is that at left back we have Cresswell and Joe Wight coming through. I still wish him well and as with any Ipswich youngster (although not a product of our own youth team) I would like to think he can move on and ressurect his career elsewhere. On the subject of Grant Leadbitter, whilst I have raised raised some criticism of him in specific matches I still think he has something to offer and detest the fact that supporters seem to need a scapegoat. I think in giving him the captaincy that Paul Jewell has helped. I wouldnt be looking to offer Grant improved terms to stay at the club but it is time for players to say yes or know when a contract is on the table. If it is no then all is clear and they should be offered up for transfer now and be told that a new contract offer will not be made and they can leave for free at the end of the season.
