Edwards Honoured to Be Skipper
Edwards Honoured to Be Skipper

Carlos Edwards says he’s honoured to captain the Blues and hopes he’s handed the armband again next season. The 33-year-old, who recently signed a new one-year deal at Portman Road, took over as skipper in February and has appeared to revel in the role.

The Trinidadian, who has been widely praised for instigating the tribute the current team paid the 1961/62 champions prior to Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Barnsley, said: “It still hasn’t sunk in.

“In all my career it is the first time I have captained a side in England, although I did captain my country.

“It is an honour. For me, it is nothing that is going to change me on and off the pitch. I just go on and get on with the job.

“I have a responsibility as captain on and off-the-pitch and I will continue to do the best that I can to keep the lads with a straight and level head.”

The former Wrexham, Luton and Sunderland man feels his captaincy has gone well up to now: “I think I have done a good job so far. To be fair, it is just basic - get to the point, tell the lads to try and play good football and whatever happens, don’t lose the game.

“We have to be hard to beat and together and work for each other. If someone makes a mistake, someone has to be there to clean up. I am not a shouter or screamer — if I did that then you know something is wrong.”

He hopes the armband, which has also been worn by Grant Leadbitter and Ibrahima Sonko this season, will be his for the 2012/13 campaign: “It is something I would like next season. After a while you get a nice sweet taste seeing that captain’s armband on your arm.

“It is a nice feeling and an honour but if next season he decides to change that, I will respect any decision he makes and give that captain 100% support.”

Quality player whose mistakes have been overly critiscised and analysed during a poor couple of seasons where scapegoats have been required - respect is earned not demanded and I like his style and I have a feeling he may just be slotting into "accepted by the majority" status - not quite a legend but his actions over the past year have elevated his qudos in my opinion.

Edwards becoming captain co-insides with our best run of the season, more belief in the team, coincidence???

I think Carlos has done a terrific job as caption of Ipswich Town. I think the decision to have a group huddle before the game is a great idea of his. It shows a great togetherness and team spirit. I have also kept a close eye on him during games, and its quite reassuring when things aren't going quite so well on the pitch that he voices his opinion whilst not shouting a screaming. He has a more of a calming effect on people and is definitely bringing the best out in JET. Keep it going Carlos.

Bedsit - Are his driving docs really that important? His performance on the pitch is all that should concern us.

Nice to see a captain proud to wear the armband with a positive attitude. Grant used to walk out with his head bowed and I always shouted at him get your head up!
Go Carlos.

Starting to prove the doubters (myself included) wrong. Not the greatest RB we have ever had but does a job and gives 100%.

I stand by my opinion that moving Carlos upfield would be a mistake. He's played his best football for us at right back, why change it?

Seems a good captain too.

as a captain like it or not you have to set an example to fellow players and young supporters.
