Leeds Reported to Be Winning Chase for Ward
Leeds Reported to Be Winning Chase for Ward
Wednesday, 9th May 2012 23:16

Leeds United are reported to be close to beating the Blues to the signature of Portsmouth’s Joel Ward. Town have been targeting the 22-year-old since January when a fee was agreed for Ward and keeper Stephen Henderson on the final day of the transfer window but the moves broke down over personal terms.

Henderson subsequently joined West Ham but Ward was at Portman Road in March to hold talks with the Blues prior to the loan deadline.

However, Portsmouth’s administrator decided not to sell with Pompey at that point still in with a chance of keeping their Championship status but with Jewell believing Ward was “keen to come” to Town having spoken to him.

Central defender Jason Pearce, who the Blues also targeted in January when Pompey rebuffed their offer along with others, recently completed a switch to Leeds for £500,000, signing a four-year deal.

Pearce and Ward are close friends having come through the youth ranks at Fratton Park and the versatile midfielder or defender may well be keen to be reunited with his former team-mate at Elland Road.

Back in January, Pompey boss Michael Appleton said, perhaps presciently: “They are two peas in a pod, where one goes the other follows."

I would like to kinda close ranks with ITFC and say "Pearce and Ward never wanted to come here so they can go run and jump" but it seems more realistic to turn my attention to that tight fisted two bob piece of sh,t Clegg and say "dont patronise me with investment and looking to the future if you are not willing to at least put some money where your idiot mouth is"!

Harsh but maybe slightly true.. Like most can we forget about this guy Ward..Leeds will be a good club again under Mr Warnock.. Ward may have been half decent but we are treating him like our saviour.. and by god he isnt, our squad needs a miracle after the beatings we got last season... dont be naive and think it wont happen again, with no sign of our bambi on ice defenders staying around....

If you lot are going to get angry everytime we get linked to a player who signs for someone else your gonna have a long hard summer. Leeds will be this seasons Leicester and will throw money around in order to get out of the league early and beat the FPP. Big risk in my opinion and one likely to backfire - just look at Porstmouth.
Just chill out and wait and see what happens at the end of the window - spleen venting may then ensue.

I'm really not surprised. We have devolped an inability to land many of our transfer targets over the last few months (here I go again, talking about Shaun Derry, willing to sign but the deal couldn't be done, why?) We failed to land any of the Pompey 3 in January, again with Ward in Feb and now we're probably going to lose out on him again, for some reason players just don't seem to want to come here.
Having said that, I only want players here who really want to be here. I think it's going to be a long hard summer ahead and all the promise of having Marcus Evans on board from 4 years back where we all thought a cash injection was going to send us back up is now looking to be a distant dream. I thought I wa one of the optimists, but I'm predicting hard times ahead!

Sadly we are a below average Championship team, with a below average manager. I fear we will be beaten to the signing of more players by the time the Summer is out. Clegg and PJ will not move this club forward.

Yep another decent player slips through the net...really is depressing, oh but there is Keogh from Coventry! for CB :)

jas, I think our bigger problem is the senior management, whilst I understand your dissatisfaction with PJ, somewhere between Evans and Clegg someone is holding some very tight purse strings and we simply cannot/will not pay the wages demanded by some new players and even our own players when it comes to renewing contracts. I only hope there are not some severe financial difficulties yet to emerge. Financial difficulties which however we would no doubt be in had it not been for Marcus Evans.

Hi Guys

Leeds Fan here (I come in peace). I have read the comments on this thread and have to point out a few things to some of you guys. The points you are raising on here are exactly the same points us Leeds Fans have been raising for the past three seasons regarding our own transfer dealings. The guys who posted that Leeds are ignoring the financial fair play rules really do need to do their homework.

In the last three seasons, Bates has continuously sold off our best assets for decent money and has failed to replace them or replaced them with freebies and loans. The money raised from these dealings has been spent on a nice new stand redevelopment with the rest of the money coming from selling finance levied on future season ticket sales. Leeds have also recorded decent operating profits over the last few years and are probably the most financially sound team in the division if not the football league.

As for us "tracking the same players as you guys". It's no secret that Pompey are in finacial dire straights so obviously decent players will be available at good money. We went throught his awful situation several years ago so know what it feels like but regardless of that, it would be foolish of us to not try to take advantage of it. you have to accept that if you think a player is good, then other teams may think their good as well and you will be competing with them for thier services. i'm pretty sure we dont have someopne following your scouts around to see who you are interested in.

Finally, as to why the players have chosen Leeds over Ipswich. I am confident that the decision is not based on financial reason as I can assure you Bates will not be paying them wages that are over the market norm. We have lost several players because of Bate's wage policy. You are talking about someone who thinks £9 million is a big enough budget to cover player purchases AND wages.... this figure represents about 30% of our income when most teams are spending closer to 60% on wages alone. i can only guess that facilities at Leeds are better than Ipswich's (although i dont know much about your facilities so cant swear to this), and as someone else pointed out, Leeds is a good/vibrant city to live in. As fat as the teams go though, i dont think there is much (if anything) between us at the moment.

anyway, good luck for next season (except against us obviously)

i think the vibrancy of the location plays a big part, from what i have seen, and ive not been to your training ground for about 4 years, but ours was more recently updated and what not, so i think theyre comparable if not a little in our favour. Your ground is bigger than ours obviously, and i think Warnocks record with QPR will float a few boats, itll be interestign to see how Bates carries on when Warnock spends a bit much or needs more cash, as i can see those two clashing and you needing a new manager before the end of next season! when i was 17 i left suffolk though to find somewhere with more happening, so i can understand the reasoning behind them moving to leeds, alongside Cardiff, Edinburgh, Bristol, Manchester and London probably the most vibrant places for a youngster now.....
