Town Linked With Move for Derby Striker
Town Linked With Move for Derby Striker
Monday, 11th Jun 2012 09:07

Town are reported to have made a £500,000 offer for Derby County striker Steve Davies but with the Rams wanting a fee closer to £1 million. The 24-year-old was initially mentioned in connection with the Blues, as well as Leeds and Bristol City, last month.

Derby manager Nigel Clough recently revealed that Davies had been transfer-listed having turned down the offer of a new contract due to "a genuine family reason". Davies has a year remaining on his current deal, the Rams having taken up an option on his previous terms.

Blues boss Paul Jewell signed Davies from Tranmere when manager at Pride Park for a fee which could have risen as high as £725,000 had various clauses been triggered.

Injuries - including a fractured skull last October - have limited Davies to only 55 starts and 39 sub appearances in his four years with Derby, in which time he has scored 23 goals, 12 of them during 2011/12.

How ironic that we're linked with making a bid for a player who is transfer listed because he wont sign a new contract. Maybe we could learn something from this and stop losing money.
Anyway, don't know much about him, but his goal return isn't that bad, more interested in the Baldock link than this one.

Perhaps a more achievable target than Baldock for a permanent move, the latter perhaps still being looked at for a season-long loan . Success would give us Chopra, Scotland, Davies, Baldock, with Murray out on loan, which would be very competitive. Still hoping to hear about links with a quality right cb, e.g. Ryan Nelson and a promising young right cb, perhaps from a lower division and a quality keeper ......... fingers crossed...

If true, I guess this is a Plan B if Baldock falls through. I'd rather the West Ham striker out of the two, but as PJ has signed this guy before he clearly rates Davies.

Might be worth a gamble but at no more than £500K. His appearance record and scoring record over 4 years is not particularly outstanding though to be fair he did have a good last season.

Havent seen much of him. At a decent price maybe worth a gamble. Best of luck ti England tis evening. Hope you do alot better than we did last night. We will still enjoy the next 2 games though. Better to be at the finals than looking at all the other teams.

Yes, thanks Sindre I did mean right sided cb. Has anyone heard anything promising regarding concrete moves for a new no. 1 goalkeeper beyond thew list we were linked with a few weeks ago.....?

Could be a very good signing, or a very bad one (if historic injury record were to repeat itself) only time would tell. Personally I would like this to work, for the right price, however I suspect that the "genuine family reason" is just as likely to rule us out as any financial issue...

With PJ stating he was looking to bring in 5 players this summer, and 1 already arriving, I can't see 2 of the remaining 4 being strikers (seeing as we still need 2 CB a GK and a CM). So it must be a case of either/or if the links to Davies + Baldock are accurate... would prefer Baldock, even on a years loan.

Quite like the sound of this one, at 24 he is a good age, goal ratio is 1.25 goals every 3 starts. Which IMO isn't too bad at all. I also think Davies is pretty good at hold up an in the air. If both out strikers can hit 15-20 goals a season each that's very good promotion contender form.
GK and a RCB is a priority though!

I know these are only links but come on! Its all very nice an jolly to be associated with these strikers I thought we were in dire need of a couple of CB!!! please lets learn the lessons of the last few years and sort our defence out!!!

lets play 2-4-4 next season, four forwards and bullard in goal.

According to Wiki he only cost Derby £275K up front, plus £250K based on appearances (he hasn't played much) and £200K if Derby get promoted to the Premier League (they haven't). How can he suddenly be worth £1M after those injuries and with a year left on his contract?!

My best mate is a derby fan, and he raves about this guy all the time! I've seen him on a number of occasions and I've said to my mate that is the best player for them, without a shadow of a doubt

His left foot is a wand, he is tall and is extremely good in the air! I would happily take this guy! he scored like 14 goals last season only playing half the season, that too me suggests something.

Age into consideration aswell, 24 is the right age for us I believe.
I'd like to see him play the lone role with JET, Martin, and then a new signing such as Coppinger

Davies sustained a life threatening head injury in 2011 which required 10 plates and 22 screws to be inserted into his forehead.

Having said that, following the injury Davies scored 12 goals in 27 games last season which was a good return by any standards.

Relatives who are DCFC season ticket holders quite rate him still but reckon he has lost some pace.

I wonder if £1m is too much and I hope that a full and detailed fitness and health check would carried out on the guy before buying.

Not a bad player but injury prone and think Baldocks a better player, but he'd be ok for half a million i reckon

When are we going to hear about a GK and CH's??

At the end of last season, it was clear we needed:

1 x GK
2 x CB
1 x Replacement for Murphy (or indeed Murphy!)
1 x Replacement for Bowyer/Leadbitter
1 x Striker

Although pleased with the signing of Hewitt, we have not really addressed the areas above. Even if we sign the French guy - he's unlikely to play (I think he has only played 6 matches before!).

Therefore, Davies IMO would tick one of the above boxes and would be a decent signing. Of course, the people who slated Roy for going back to his old club for players will not be happy with this.

In addition, as others have pointed out - Clegg should learn from this. If martin doesn't want to commit to a new contract we should sell him.

For all you people who say no thanks or prefer Baldock read ITFC94's post. It is spot on. This guy Davies is quality. Derby's good start to the season can be attributed to him banging in the goals - then he got a very serious injury (fractured skull) and was out for a long time - only to come back and start scoring almost straight away. Town fans will love this guy if we are lucky enough to get him. Derby do not want to lose him..Too many people on here writing drivell that know nothing about the players that are mentioned!!

Same for Baldock, he is a top player West Ham rate him highly but likely to let him go as they not got time in the Prem for him to get up to speed - he needs at least a full season (injury free) at Championship level. He was doing well there until he got injured. I would be delighted if we got them both.
