Jewell Delighted With First Day Fitness Levels
Jewell Delighted With First Day Fitness Levels
Friday, 6th Jul 2012 07:30

Town boss Paul Jewell was delighted with the fitness levels shown by his players on the first day of pre-season training yesterday. The squad were given individual programmes for the summer months with Michael Chopra spending time at a $4,500-a-week health farm in California and Jay Emmanuel-Thomas spending time working on his running in London.

Jewell said: “We’ve tested all the players this morning and their fitness levels have really pleased me. I didn’t expect them not to be good, but they’ve surprised me with the amount of work that they’ve done.

“They’ve been away, they’ve had their programmes and they’ve had to adhere to them because they all have the heart monitors now that check up on what they’re doing and where they are. I’m really pleased with the shape the squad has come back in.”

He expects the squad to be fitter than ever come the start of the new campaign: “Pre-season is a time where it’s all about hard work and preparing for a hard season. We’ve had Michael Chopra who has been on a sabbatical and Jay Emmanuel-Thomas has had 18 sessions with a speed-endurance guy in London.

“We’re expecting more from them this year as well with the addition of [double Olympic rowing gold medallist] Steve Williams. Even though he’s not a player, I think he might be a really good signing for us.”

Mark Kennedy, who has joined the coaching staff after hanging up his boots at the end of last season, missed out on the delights of the first day of pre-season as a player, something Jewell says he is glad to have put behind him: “I was saying to Sparky earlier that the only time I time I don’t miss being a footballer is pre-season.

“Having said all that, there’s nothing quite like the way everyone will feel after the session - when you’ve just had a shower when you’ve worked your socks off.

“It’s a lot easier stood around the pitch with a stopwatch while everybody’s running, but the way Sparky’s last year was it’s not too much different!”

Chops does look really sharp and he looks like he's lost a considerable amount of weight. Also Josh carson has lost a bit of chubb too! Glad JET has been at a speed endurance course, he can really scare defenses when he runs at them, plus he has got a beastly shot from outside the area...Just always seemed to hit the post last season ha! Glad they have all had individual fitness plans. If anyone hasnt checked out the keeper we have on trial at the mo, watch this 8min video on youtube. looks pretty sharp! LET ME KNOW WHAT U GUYS THINK!!??

Looked at the video clips of Jakupovic. It should be said that he made some good saves but I could probably put a similar sort of video together for ALB, so can't read too much into that!
What sort of goals does he concede is more important, you can probably tell more by the mistakes he makes. There weren't any clips of him coming for crosses in a crowded penalty area or kicking the ball.
On the plus side from the video, he is obviously used to playing behind some woeful defences, so he wouldn't be too shocked with Delaney in front of him!

Thinking about what u just said i completely agree. well hopefully Delaney will mostly be on the bench at the start of the season and throughout. although he progressed alot throughout last season, im expecting a new CB and smith to be in the back line, along with cresswell and edwards...(He gets the bus, he gets the buuus, Carlos Edwards, he's getting the bus) haha!! Ive been looking for any KOUROUMA videos on the net but i cant find any...if u, or anyone else finds any, please can they post them? thanks :)

Jewell makes it sound like none of them were going to keep to the programs they had, like school homework.

Must have been hard for Chopra 3 weeks in a place where you are waited on hand and foot, hope some can book me in and foot the 10k bill too

But I doubt PJ's standards are that high anyway.

Chopra should be fit he has cost Ipswich 2.5 million in transfer fee paying off thugs and rehabs in England and USA so he owes Ipswich big time

We had the problem of not sticking to programmes last year with Carson, am I right?

He came back tubs, and Jewell wasn't impressed therefore scuppered Joshie's chances of starting for a while!?

I could be wrong

2.5 million? get back in your cave. He does owe Ipswich for their support though and return last year, all considering, was not too bad at all. When I saw him he looked sharp and hopefully he will continue his progression on all fronts this coming season.

As for the story, all sounds positive to me. hopefully we can hit the ground running this year and build on any early successes we have.

God there are some f*ckwits on here. Squad comes back in preseason looking sharp and fit and you're still finding things to moan about. Sod off back to Norwich.

And nice to hear PJ saying something positive(ish) for once. Someone send him on a positive thinking course though as he's still depressing as hell!

I've heard all this before blah blah blah about fitness levels in the close season...it's what we're like when the season starts that bothers me.
