Jewell: Some of Our Football Was Scintillating
Jewell: Some of Our Football Was Scintillating
Thursday, 9th Aug 2012 06:00

Manager Paul Jewell felt some of the football his team played in the first half at Colchester was “scintillating” but thought the performance dropped off after the break. Two more goals from Michael Chopra saw the Blues to a 2-1 victory over the League One side.

Jewell said: “Some of the stuff we played in the first half was scintillating. Some of the stuff in the second was a little bit sloppy.

“We’ve got to make sure that when we get possession of the ball in those key areas we kill teams off because we should have been four or five-up at half-time and then the game’s easy.

“I know it’s pre-season, but at 2-0, 2-1 there’s always a chance that the opposition are going to get into it.”

One of the stand-out performers in the first half was Jay Emmanuel-Thomas and Jewell wants to see the 21-year-old — as well as the rest of his side — play like that for whole matches: “We want to keep him up to those standards [in the second half as well as the first].

“You’re not going to be able to skin a full-back every time you get it, but he showed in the first half what he is capable of, just like he did on Saturday, and we’ve make sure we try and get that out of him.

“Not just him, but the whole group. I said to them in training yesterday that the thing that let us down last season wasn’t being as good as someone on our day, it’s when we’re not at our best. We’re so inconsistent. We go from half to half.”

Midfielder Jimmy Bullard was again left out of the travelling party, Jewell explaining: “I spoke with Jimmy and at the moment he’s not in the squad, simple as that. There’s nothing untoward. I don’t see the point of him sitting here and getting 10 or 15 minutes.”

When JET arrived it was pretty clear he was going to be a hot and cold performer. When he is able to put in his best for 80% of a game, he is going to be a real handful.

"We are so inconsistent. We go from half to half". I think that this is a mental issue in terms of being able to concentrate for the whole game. It has often been referred to over recent years and it is a key difference between top teams and the rest. A good sports psychologist should be able to improve this facet of our players performance, if of course they could apply what they would be told to do to.

The whole jimmy thing unsettles me tbh, I don't know what he is playing at, he is no where near the player he was on loan, very disappointing, he seams he is about the money after all

Good first half poor second do to changes against a weak Col side so ok at best .
As for Bullard another total waste of £15000 a week another Jewell failure to add to all the others

I saw Ryan Lochte of USA being interviewed this morning and was asked why the USA swim team was so successful and he pointed to the fact that they always focused on the positive which lifted the team. Some of the posters on here - bluey123 in particular - would do well to follow this mantra as in posting constant negativity you are setting us up as a team for failure. We all have our part to play and I find it incredible that the reaction to such a positive story can be so negative.

"Paul Jewell felt some of the football his team played in the first half at Colchester was “scintillating”"

if it is scintillating against Blackburn then I will be happy... remember what everyone always says about friendlies, pinch of salt, fitness improving etc. etc....

I don't fully understand the whole Jimmy thing....

I'll take scintillating B&B BRISTOL and Blackburn

Bluey 123 - you can shout my comments down too if you like - but how on earth can you call Bullard "another Jewell failure to add to the list" is beyond me. You or others like you were baying for PJ's blood already and he would have been hounded out of the ground had he failed to land JB after his loan spell. ME was also involved heavily but it was the fans like you and me who "forced their hand" to sign him up.. But land him he did and everyone (almost - and hats off to those who saw it coming) was delighted at the time. But there is not just something wrong with Bullard's playing - there is something wrong with Bullard and he needs help not hounding. PJ needs help in helping him too.

We (as a whole club) showed great patience with Chopra with his addictions and PJ seems to have done brilliantly there to support those helping him and to bring him back to his best. [warning - ignorant -unfounded and without proof - comment coming ...] All JB needs to do is to accept that he needs help and it will be forthcoming. It will be a real shame if he ends up like so many ex stars - and no, that is not JUST because it will cost the club £15k a week ... it is because a needy human being is not able to sort his life out

For the sake of the club and the player we need JB back int he squad - playing with flair and freedom as a content man. Sadly for all, we seem to be a long way off that. I for one do not want to throw anyone out onto the scrap heap because personal problems have affected their professional performance. I don't know what his needs are and nor do you - but can you not at least see that he clearly has some that the club are trying to help with?

I think Jimmy has played his last game for us.. I expect something to be released soon backing this up... (shame as a fit, mentally right JB would have been great for us)
On a plus point can't wait to see JET play this season. Could be a massive year for him.

Raymondovic

Agree with your analysis if not your conclusions. JB has been effectively written off by the management and is not receiving the support he needs. Now whether he deserves this support is another matter but as he has another year at 15k per week it is surely too early to 'chop his legs off' quite yet. More man management skills required methinks.

If it comes to 'get rid' time we need to engineer a move to our best advantage. This doesn't look possible at this time.

Wouldn't go that far Jewell! We we're good but nothing out of the blue.

And as for Jimmy there is more to it than being a poor player at the moment, would hazard a guess he has been up to no good out drinking again.

the reason we were poor after the break is because jewell cant give half time team talk just like at reading

I would rather have Bullard on £15k a week knowing that he did genuinely stave off relegation for us than Ben Haim on £37,500 a week and about to send the club out of business.

Puts any mistakes that Paul Jewell has made into perspective.

Don't get too carried away with JET.

Unfortunately, we all know if he plays to his best, week in week out, he won't be with us for very long. Very frustrating but true I'm afraid.

Roll on Bristol Rovers.

Did I miss something in the 1st half at Colchester? Yes the moves for both goals were brilliant, but was the rest of the 1st half any different to the 2nd half? This is just my opinion, but I wouldn't get carried away with the overall 1st half performance!

You deluded fools this lot must be related to Jewell how anyone can think Bullard was a success must be blind stupid or both grow up people and smell the coffee or keep taking the pro Jewell drugs he is useless the worst manager we have ever had I support the team not the idiots that run it

Bullard should be our new manager when Jewell gets the boot

Noticed by reading again - largely a one half performance, and that can generally be said about Ipswich full stop! If we're going to get towards the play-offs or in them we have to start controlling games, not just for 45 minutes. If we we're so 'Scintillating' first half how comes we were only 2-0 up against a team a league below us?

Cannot claim to know what is the real problem is with Jimmy.

Is it problems inside or outside football, we, as fans, will prob never know
He did play well for us when on loan, prob kept us up and most fans, I think, wanted him to sign for us.

Since then it has not worked out, some one, a mate, the PFA or an ex footballer should sit him down and sort out his problems. He is a good player but for us, on the outside, his attitude seems terrible.
He has at Best, two years left to play the greatest game in the world and then aprox another 50 years regreating some of the things he did.
Maybe someone should tell him that again because I'm sure he has already been told that by loads of people incl PJ and ME

unless we sign an accomplished CB that can stay awake for 90 minutes, a midfielder that can read a game and a clinical forward above 6 foot.. It will be the same dull season as the last...
