The Greatest Number Nines
Monday, 27th Aug 2012 10:18

To celebrate being named the official charity of The Football League, Prostate Cancer UK asked websites and bloggers from each of the 72 clubs — including TWTD - to name the top five strikers to have worn their number nine shirt.

The number nine was chosen in recognition of the fact that prostate cancer affects one in nine men.

Phil’s assessment of the greatest Blues number nines can be found here, along with those at the other 71 Football League clubs.

Ray Crawford ........ memories fade over 50 years but as a boy I thought he was fantastic. He was so strong and battered the defence for every ball.

Didn't John Wark wear number 9 in his thrird spell with the club?

Dermot Curtis
That's my biased opinion, the club has had some great number 9's over the decades

If Whitton is up there with best we have its a sad indictment. Awful player that lyall and mcgiven used for long ball to wing tactics.

Paul Mariner. The only true great no.9 in my lifetime.

I saw all these number nines many times.

Ray Crawford has to be at the top because:

1) He won the league for Town in 61-62 with many great goals and especially the two he scored to clinch the title in the last game V Aston Villa
2) He scored vital goals to get us promoted again in 67-8 under Bill McGarry including the goal in the final game V Blackburn that won us the old second division
3) He was our first England international - big breakthrough for Town

I would agree with the other ratings with Paul Mariner at No. 2 behind Ray Crawford. Paul scored great goals but didn't win us the league title.

Phil you got this one wrong, but I don't think you could have seen the great Ray Crawford in 61-2..

ps obviously Phil is not old enough to have seen Crawford but to put him behind both Johnsons is questionable to say the least. I could accept an argument for Mariner vying to be above him but no-one else comes near

Ray Crawford & Paul Mariner, followed by David Jonty Johnson.
All played for England, but please dont include Counago in this list , its like comparing Delaney to Kevin Beattie

They just asked for a top five, I didn't put them in any particular order, aside from Mariner being the obvious number one amongst number nines.
