Wantaway Southend Defender Training With Town Monday, 3rd Sep 2012 22:30 Southend central defender, striker or winger Bilel Mohsni is training with Town this week, we understand. The 25-year-old French-Tunisian, who was at Playford Road today, is definitely on his way out of Roots Hall despite having a year remaining on his contract and was close to joining West Ham earlier in the summer.
Paris-born Mohsni, who is primarily a centre-half, played for French lower league clubs CO Les Ulis, US Saint-Georges and Sainte-Geneviève Sports before joining Southend after a trial in July 2010.
Southend rebuffed a £250,000 offer from Blackpool in January 2011 with Mohsni having made a good early impression.
He faced the Blues in the 1-1 pre-season draw at Roots Hall prior to the start of the 2011/12 season, playing one half at the back and one up front and almost getting himself sent off for clashing with Lee Martin, Andy Drury amongst others in a lively, effective and not a little volatile performance.
Last season, cult figure Mohsni operated as a striker and then as a winger for Paul Sturrock’s side but failed to show for the start of pre-season training this time around as he was looking to play at a higher level, subsequently joining West Ham on trial.
The Hammers were impressed enough to offer £150,000 for 6ft 3in tall Mohsni but the Shrimpers refused the offer and the player returned to France.
Last week, he spent time with Celtic on trial but with the transfer window having closed last Friday a switch to the SPL champions — if they were interested - now couldn’t take place until January.
With the emergency loan window opening this coming weekend, the Blues or any other Football League club who might be interested could sign him on an initial loan with a view to a permanent deal in January.

Sounds like trouble, how come they didn't get a fee for him during the transfer window? If he is that good someone in the Champs would have surely snapped him up..

Just talking to a Shrimpers fan here in the office. He was primarily a centre back. Wins everything in the air and fairly nippy too. He was only stuck up front due to a shortage in strikers and scored a hat-trick in one of his first games in that position. More recently he's been played out wide in what sounds like a Murphy-type role i.e. a target man for the long diagonal ball. My mate here reckons he could do a decent job at Championship level but he is a real hot head and his energies need to be channelled.

We need to sort our defence out full stop...can't believe that Jewell's still not grasped the fact that we leak goals for fun and hasn't done something about it..one of the worst defensive records in the entire football league last season and things still haven't improved thisseason - think we've already got the 2nd worst in the championship. It's not rocket science - you start by sorting things out at the back then the rest follows - we can't score 3 or 4 every game (again) to win games this season.

@bluearmy78. Fair enough mate. Just hope we can sign a decent centre half. Once again its a major problem for us.

I'm definate with you Irishtim along with the rest of our supporters. I'd like to see Wilson from Celtic but he's playing regularly & very well at that so I can't see him joining us. St Ledger would be my 2nd choice but he made his first start at Leicester this season on Saturday. This Southend guy wouldn't be a bad shout if we get him on a free but in my opinion we need at least another 2 CB's. Broadfoot by the way plays at LB

really cant believe some people on here. we show interest in a player who actually has a bit of a nasty streak in him & you say we shouldnt take him. so we should carry on being a nicey, nicey team as we are now & let teams bully us into mistakes. of course hed have to temper down a bit, make sure he wasnt suspended too often, but he is of the ilk that we desperately need in our team. also, hes actually a decent player too, as he showed in that friendly, caused us a lot of problems before his spat with l. martin

I thought we have made a concious decision to get rid off all the knobbers in our dressing room?

Reckon if we had a solid defence we would have a chance of the playoffs.

Defender, winger and striker? Very versatile - nothing wrong with that at all. Many European players are trained from a young age to play all over the pitch, which is why they are generally better all-round players. I'd welcome this signing. He looks like a right firey character with plenty of attitude. Sometimes you need a player like that in a team, and seeing as our back line is rather limp and directionless, perhaps Mosnhi could be just what we need. Good age too.

Can't say I've seen much of him but I do like the sound of his versatility and he must have quality if he was wanted by Celtic and West Ham. Sounds like a bit of a hothead but if he can learn to channel this in the right way (Rooney style) then it may be a good thing. Had a look at Southend supporters' opinion of him - they think he's great. While on the subject, I must comment that whenever I do this when we are linked with a player, I never come across an unofficial club site with as much content or quality as this one. Keep up the good work Phil!

I remember him from the play off games against Crewe,he was peculiar. Refused to pass to any team mates and went into several strops b4 appearing to start crying.Seemed to have a bit of ability and lots of missing screws.Loose cannon, temperamental genius or plain weirdo.Wud certainly become a cult figure to those with an IQ under 12....... 73%.

Im local to southend and have seen him play a few times and the last time I saw him play he scored a hatrick in the first half. He can play CB, RB, RM and CF so could really help our small squad. I think a loan fee of 100k and then a 100k transfer (or something like that) would suit a Southend team that still doesnt have alot of money

...... this guy is no fool I assure you - a good utility player who can genuinely, and effectively, play in the positions as mentioned. Could do MUCH worse that get him on board for sure.
