Jewell: Better Side But Lacked Cutting Edge
Saturday, 15th Sep 2012 17:51

Blues boss Paul Jewell felt his team were the better side at the Riverside despite falling to a 2-0 defeat to Middlesbrough. Town created plenty of chances and the Liverpudlian was disappointed his team failed to take any of them.

Jewell said: “I thought we were the better team, I thought we played good football, we just lacked the cutting edge today inside the box. We’ve had lots of shots, played lots of quality football, had good possession, the only thing that was missing was goals.

“We created plenty of openings and we don’t make the most of them, real gilt-edged chances, through really good football.

“We had 17 shots on goal throughout the game, but we haven’t made their goalkeeper work hard enough, hence the reason we didn’t win the game.”

The Town manager was disappointed with Boro’s first goal which came after Andy Drury’s misplaced pass midway inside his own half: “It was a sloppy ball in midfield.

"The lad [Luke Williams] finished it really well, you can’t take the finish away from him. We had good possession in the middle of the park, we lost it and the next thing we’re a goal down.”

Jewell’s side pushed for the equaliser in the latter stages before being caught on the counter-attack for the Teessiders’ second goal but he thought his team deserved more for their performance: “The story of the second half is that we piled forward, they were trying to hit us on the break.

“We kept going, we tried to keep playing, but the ball didn’t drop for us in the box today. I’m not one to blame bad luck but the bounce of the ball just didn’t fall our way.

“We tried fresh legs late on and I thought the team, everyone who came on the pitch, played their part.

“OK, we’ve lost 2-0 and people will look at the result but you’ve got to look deeper than the result at this stage of the season.

“I thought some of our play was excellent and if we’d have come away with a point we would have been disappointed. To get nothing, we’re doubly disappointed.”

Jewell said he’d comment on whether he would be pursuing his interest in German trialist Kevin Pezzoni in the week.

Middlesbrough boss Tony Mowbray admitted his side had been given a difficult afternoon: “You have to say Ipswich played very well.

“Ipswich have got a history of being good with the ball, I was there for nine years and the coaching and the philosophy and the expectation at that club is that they take care of the ball, and I think they showed that today.

“They probably lacked a bit of a cutting edge. I thought Jonathan Woodgate and Andre Bikey and Jason Steele were very good today and yet, while Ipswich might be disappointed because they played well, we’ve won the game 2-0 and you can’t be dominant every game.

“There have been some occasions when we’ve lost and been dominant with the ball and I’m happy enough to take the points.”

We need to get two home wins under our belt. Hate seeing us where we are in the league, hate it. I know it's early days but the pressure will be on if PJ and the team don't get there act together. We are better than where we currently lie in the league, but all in all I'm not sure PJ is getting the best out of the players. PJ probably has 3-4 games to get this right or I think he maybe shown the door.

No one can say Jewell hasn't been backed by the owner, weve just spent 1.75m!!!!! Jewell and Jewell alone is responsible for the shambles on the pitch that we watch week in week out! JEWELL OUT!!!! UTTER GARBAGE X

I really plead with Ipswich Towns top brass to go public with what is going on at Portman Road. We want no spin and no yarns as we are not stupid, just plain talking as to where our owner wants to go with this Club. I know he rescued us and has probably given us a stay of execution but we rarely hear from him. We need to know how he intends to take this Club forward when everything so far has not reaped the rewards we anticipated. OK Mr Evans wants to stay anonymous but he could take part in a phone in, and at least make some kind of contact with us the supporters. Sheepy had his critics but at least the guy faced the music unlike this set up we have now. As for PJ I really do feel for the guy - I know for a fact he eats sleeps and drinks ITFC but is he getting the financial backing he needs to get decent players in ? I've lost count of the players he has had in the building only for them to leave through terms not being agreed. You cannot make a silk purse out of a sows ear and what we have at the moment is not good enough. We crave for 2 more centre backs and a big target man - PJ knows that but is he getting financial backing I think not ? I am gutted by todays result but we need to get a reality check on where we now stand in the football world. We are a small Town Club who have vastly over achieved in the past and we are now in a league where we would be seeded in the lower half of the division. Despite my comments I believe us supporters do expect too much but we should at least be able to live in hope.

I was fortunate to start watching Ipswich in the early 1970's and watch a team build into a great English team and then into Europe. I appreciate the Robson day's are long gone, money in the game has a lot to do with this, we are no longer a big club, yet our Norfolk rivals are still able to compete in the top division so that dream is still alive to be able to compete with the best. Unfortunately we are miles away from this, we seem to have a decent team on paper to compete and challange for the top spots in the championship, yet we look weak on the pitch in every department. Is this down to the players or the management - I am not sure, but surely if ME plan is still to get to the premiership then he has to either have faith in PJ and give him some extra cash to attract the players he needs or get in someone else he has faith in? Why are so many players linked to the club and seem near to signing yet when personal terms are discussed it falls flat. I respect the club for having a sensible pay policy but if the club has any ambitions then they have to take a risk otherwise we are facing at the best a mid table place again this year. Time for ME to come out and tell us fans what his plans are?

Well two home games now need to produce six points, but if we lose them and then the next game in September, Jewell should be shown the door, with RedKnapp introduced ahead of the Sky clash with Cardiff!

No Essexblue - we've had enough of the following for the last 4 years:

- not being able to score enough goals
- not being able to prevent enough goals
- not being able to land transfer targets
- getting rid of expensive players for free
- not being able to replace players
- selling young promising players and squandering the cash
- confused messaging in transfer debacles
- the same rhetoric per and post match
- partial reinvestment in the club on received transfer money
- lack of a public voice
- dwindling attendances
- piss poor and shambolic results...

This list could go on. Stop dreaming! Sack the board!
I don't want Evans at this club for his continual failure to pick managers who can't do the job! Can someone tell me why he sanctions a 1.75 million move for Taylor which is a ridiculous figure but then won't allow extra for wages outside of the new self imposed budget!? Can anyone work that out as it doesn't make sense!!! How many countless good players have we lost out on because if this? Players who are succeeding at other clubs!

Sean O'Driscoll and a good owner. How I envy you Forest!

Sweep the decks of this complete dross that' ruined our club!

I wish I had the balls to moan about everything after listening to the games on the radio. Get off your backsides and follow the team. Not too bad a turn-out from the loyal tractor boys and girls this afternoon.

Poor manager, poor coach he cannot set up the team to defend, check the goals against column. He has had more than enough time to sort this, i don`t think he is capable of sorting this mess out. Be sure it is a mess, last minute deals and loans, players not wanting to come, perhaps just perhaps genuine quality players do not want to play for this manager.
Again today if you watch the goals poor pass from drury but cresswell to high again, good clearance from their keeper but poor starting positions from our 2 defenders.
Time for someone new, someone who will attract players and get on the training ground and coach.

Whilst our squad is light on quality I genuinely think we have a team that can finish in the top half of the table. Unfortunately I dont think we have a manager who can get us to those dizzy heights. He clearly lacks the ability to inspire his team to succeed, he lacks the character to pick the team up with a few words of inspiration, he lacks the flexibility to adapt his tactics and he lacks the basic coaching skills and common sense to sort out our defensive problems on the training pitch and/or in the transfer market. Quite simple - sort the defence out and the midfield and our strikers with then have the confidence to go forward and score the goals. Taylor looks like he could be a good buy but is a luxury that we can ill afford when that money should have been spent more wisely on a commanding centre back - a bit like buying a brand new widescreen TV for your house when you should be sorting out the dry rot and the hole in the roof instead.

While your list of complaints is undeniably valid and needs to be addressed, your proposed solution is nonsense. Sacking the Board can't and won't happen. The directors are just puppets whose strings are pulled by the owner. In corporate governance terms there is no evidence that the directors comprising the board of the football plc act independently of the wishes of the owner.

ME will only go if he receives an acceptable offer for his interest in the club. Given our current status in the football world I am sure that there will be no shortage of prospective applicants tripping over themselves to give ME his money back with maybe just a small return on his investment. Of course if I am wrong we will have to soldier on with ME's support such as it is and continue to be grateful that we still have a club to support.

As per Forest be careful what you wish for, that, like so many takeovers of Championship clubs, is destined to end in tears.

But don't get me started on the Taylor transfer, he may be a good player, but paying £1.5m+ to replace JET @ £1.4m when there are other obvious deficiencies in the squad is nothing short of scandalous.

Keanish, agreed but who will sack Evans?

I believe that Evans is the problem with this club and I believe the only reason he sanctioned the Taylor move was to 'show the fans we still mean business' but in reality he knew we'd get him on cheap wages.

I'm sick and tired of losing out on the players we need because of our wage structure, other clubs of a similar size can do it so with a multi-millionaire owner why can't we? Oh yes, FFP as we're told by those who never moan. Well FFP isn't in full force yet so now is the time to invest, in some defenders! Or it'll be a long hard season.

Whilst I'm grateful for Evans initial contribution I don't think he's the right man to take this club forward, question is, who would be interested in us?

sick of this....utterly sick of hearing the same boring dull crap excuses from this hasbeen manager. Crap coaching, clueless tactics, bad player management and failed transfer targets.
3 seasons this bloke has been here and no improvement has been made or is llikely....his coaching team are incapable of coaching anything into our players, they seem good at coaching any talent they have OUT of them. why do they keep making these basic errors..Jewell is living on past glories and giving coaching jobs to his mates....in my humble opinion he needs to go and take Hutchings and Mcarthy with him..NOW before its too late and we are playing in league one next year....and dont you Jewell lovers dare believe it couldnt happen either, bigger clubs than ours have spent plenty of time down there....

If we could get a decent CB we'd be OK. It will happen but unfortunately we need some luck to stop the slide.

But why is everyone moaning we played well for large amounts of the game, we're away at Middlesboro and we are short of a couple of players.

We won't get relegated but we won't get anywhere with the old moaners on this site.

If we're as rubbish as you lot say, why don't you have a break and get an allottment or decorate your house?

BuckieBlue added 22:32 - Sep 15
Two points: as we all wanted we've got half a new side from last season (maybe more to come)- they will take time to gell ( none of the other sides with a lot of new players have started that well, except Blackburn and with their paracute money they can afford better players than us)
also a week is a long time in football, IF we win our next two- both winable- then we'll be around top 10, and it'll look like we're building something.

A report from a fan at the game
Like most of us on the site I did not go to the match
Think we should hold back till after the next two home games and if we have not got a min of 4 points ( and an extra CB) PJ should walk away and back to Sky.

It's not much fun being a town fan today or should I say this week, or maybe this month or even for the last five or so years since Joe Royal left .

Who is to blame?
Owners/chairmen/ directors for signing wrong manager, Alowing managers to sign players for far too much money and wages

Managers for signing wrong players/letting players go/wrong tactics/not being able to change systems untill too late. Coming out will same old bullsh*t after each loss

Players not performing/not giving a toss about our club. Even when you are playing badly you can at least look like you are trying . 17 shots not one goal !!!!!!

Fans. for thinking we are bigger and better cliub than we now are, building up players who are at best average then shooting them down again because they cannot play like Messi.

Just put my tin hat on after last line
