Jewell: Better Side But Lacked Cutting Edge
Saturday, 15th Sep 2012 17:51

Blues boss Paul Jewell felt his team were the better side at the Riverside despite falling to a 2-0 defeat to Middlesbrough. Town created plenty of chances and the Liverpudlian was disappointed his team failed to take any of them.

Jewell said: “I thought we were the better team, I thought we played good football, we just lacked the cutting edge today inside the box. We’ve had lots of shots, played lots of quality football, had good possession, the only thing that was missing was goals.

“We created plenty of openings and we don’t make the most of them, real gilt-edged chances, through really good football.

“We had 17 shots on goal throughout the game, but we haven’t made their goalkeeper work hard enough, hence the reason we didn’t win the game.”

The Town manager was disappointed with Boro’s first goal which came after Andy Drury’s misplaced pass midway inside his own half: “It was a sloppy ball in midfield.

"The lad [Luke Williams] finished it really well, you can’t take the finish away from him. We had good possession in the middle of the park, we lost it and the next thing we’re a goal down.”

Jewell’s side pushed for the equaliser in the latter stages before being caught on the counter-attack for the Teessiders’ second goal but he thought his team deserved more for their performance: “The story of the second half is that we piled forward, they were trying to hit us on the break.

“We kept going, we tried to keep playing, but the ball didn’t drop for us in the box today. I’m not one to blame bad luck but the bounce of the ball just didn’t fall our way.

“We tried fresh legs late on and I thought the team, everyone who came on the pitch, played their part.

“OK, we’ve lost 2-0 and people will look at the result but you’ve got to look deeper than the result at this stage of the season.

“I thought some of our play was excellent and if we’d have come away with a point we would have been disappointed. To get nothing, we’re doubly disappointed.”

Jewell said he’d comment on whether he would be pursuing his interest in German trialist Kevin Pezzoni in the week.

Middlesbrough boss Tony Mowbray admitted his side had been given a difficult afternoon: “You have to say Ipswich played very well.

“Ipswich have got a history of being good with the ball, I was there for nine years and the coaching and the philosophy and the expectation at that club is that they take care of the ball, and I think they showed that today.

“They probably lacked a bit of a cutting edge. I thought Jonathan Woodgate and Andre Bikey and Jason Steele were very good today and yet, while Ipswich might be disappointed because they played well, we’ve won the game 2-0 and you can’t be dominant every game.

“There have been some occasions when we’ve lost and been dominant with the ball and I’m happy enough to take the points.”

Walbers - your account has been hacked!

I do believe that PJ is not entirely to blame and I hate the fact that ME is invisible and Clegg just a puppet, however......for anyone still believing that PJ is the right man and aside from the CB issue, when was the last time we played really well for an entire game and been entertained? I can only think of the 2 West Ham games and that is a very poor return from his 80 odd games in charge.

Keanish - I am with you, but it won't be easy!

First of all I did'nt go to the game Icould only keep up with it on my mobile and the BBC so I'm not commenting on the game per-se just the comments on this sight. iF AND ITS NOT A BIG IF, Jewells time is up who is gonna take over. Whoever it is cant make any real changes to christmas and then what happens either they get nothing to spend or they get money bring in 4 or 5 new players, then they all need time to bed in and so eitherway unless we get a man management maestro for Jewells replacement we could be relegation fodder. So my question is this WHO, people have mentioned Mick Mcarthy but he wont be interested with the board we have at present.Others have mentioned Matt Holland but he has no experience, Harry Redknapp wont happen he'll wan't big money to spend. Jewell may well turn this around and people on here may well have to eat their words but we are in a bad place and the one thing we can do is get behind the 11 players on the pitch with all we have and be carefull what we wish for. Lets not get ahead of ourselves, we are not relegation candidates at this stage. Yes we might be 3rd from bottom now but lets not forget we are only three points off of 8th. Two wins in a row from Wolves and Charlton would probably see us into the play offs. Lets have a bit of reality please

This is all getting beyond boring now, used to look forward to the games, we always used to look like a team on the up and looked dangerous. Under the likes of Keane, Jewell, we've never excited and its just been the same dribble each week. Bring back Joe Royle and get this club moving again, cant see us going anywhere but down in this sorry situation we're in, the man is clueless, sort it out, im bored.

What makes me laugh now is that he is starting to tinker around with the midfield, why put N'Daw in the centre? shouldn't he stick with a tried Loungo/Hyam or Drury/Hyam - it makes no sense to have both Loungo and Hyam on the bench. When N'Daw was mentioned about starting I thought that Smith would be rested and N'Daw as CB.
Now we're getting we have no cutting edge as well as poor defence, you talk a good game Jewell but unfortunately for you your time is running out!

Well I have only been to 2 games this season and they were the first two and were really positive results so maybe I should go again so we can get up and running.

PJ wont get sacked in his last year of his contract, im afraid it could be us grimming and baring with him and hope for mid table then get someone decent in next season, breaks me to write a season off already but I hope I am wrong. COYB!

wish people would read the whole article before commenting. its not just pj who's saying we were the better team. mowbray also saying much the same so it not the usual case of pj making excuses. but then none of you who are on here to simply slate pj are interested in facts are you. good to see that certainly some of those people actually at the game are being more realistic tho. clearly most commenting on here were not there tho.dont get me wrong, im not on here to defend pj as i certainly at this mo have lost faith in him but am hoping he'll prove me wrong because sacking him would simply put us back to square 1. a new manager would probably not want all the players that are here so would want to bring his own players in & so the rebuilding starts yet again. that leads to another season or 2 of transition, then if it not improve you'll all be on here asking for him to be sacked too. alliedaz, quite why you blaming clegg for the performances i do not know, he has nothing to do with the football side of the club, just the business side. he signs the players hes asked to sign(within the limits set by m.e.).as for your "fans will turn their backs on home games"? no. true fans won't. because real fans support the club regardless of how the team doing.

The more I think of it the more he does need to go. He is a "yesterday's" manager, my worry is, is that we will string a few wins together getting us to mid table and polishing the turd. Subsequently he gets a new three year deal, to add stability to his ever ongoing (and never actually starting) plan for promotion. This means that as we remain in the same predicament next year and we want to sack him we cant afford it! We have the team to do well. Martin, chopra, and i think the new lad Taylor have the cutting edge if coached properly, even Scotland can be class on his day.

I say get rid now whilst it's relatively cheep to do say, make sure he takes all his "mates" who he manoeuvred into the club (the guy he brought in to do fitness prior to the rower was a joke). We can look forward to a proper new dawn at this club rather than crawling on with nothing to look foward to other than the chance we might get Norwich in the FA cup.

Not sure who we should have but I'd give matt holland a go, bring BFJ back to give him a bit of direction too. Surely can be no worse than it is at the moment???

I listened to the game on the radio yesterday and we seemed to be playing ok however to win games you have to score goals.I cannot see why when we were 1-0 and pressing for the goal jewell didn't have the balls to stick another one up front. Instead he stuck to 442 and in the end we lost to another defensive hoodoo. If pj doesn't get two cb in the next 15 days I say leave as I've had enough of the excuses. The reason you can't get players in is because we have an owner who is penny pinching and a moron who cudnt find his way out of a paper bag doing the negotiating.

Keaneish added 08:25 - Sep 16
Correct in what you say, 'sack the board' isn't correct, sacking the owner is what I meant and given he owns 80% of the club he kind of is the board!

We're the people who sack him and get him to put the club up for sale for other prospective buyers. This may take time but I'd rather that than this continue!

Keanish is right with both his posts and the tide is turning. I've been anti Jewell since the start and now more and more fans are seeing that the results and style of play are no different from the garbage we saw under Keane. I lost confidence in Clegg quite quickly as I was bemused by the sheer number of players who came to Portman Road to discuss terms and then left without putting pen to paper and rightly or wrongly I've concluded that Clegg's lack of experience is too blame. I couldn't believe our luck when Evans took over and I thought the appointment of Keane showed real ambition. Subsequently that ambition now seems to have disappeared and I'd like to see ME sell the club to someone who is prepared to take a bit more of a gamble with their own money in order to see the club progress. I've supporting Town since before the FA Cup win, I've been as far as Moscow to follow the team and I'm amazed by the lack of ambition of some of our own fans who describe us as a small club. Where are FolridaBoy and Ipswich21 with their blind support for PJ today ? The fact is we need some changes at Portman Road and Jewell is the most urgent of those changes.

If possible, could someone put on here Paul Jewell,s Win,Draw Loss Record from day 1,not friendlies, but league and cup please,it really must be an awful record.

It,s quite an unbelievable situation, the squad clearly is not big enough,he has said that all summer, but 5 games in and already out of the League Cup as well, and we still are hopelessly short, the Centre-Back scenario is incredible, what positives have we really got to cling to under this management set up,if there are some, then fair play,i respect your opinions, but although i agree,we are not a relegation club,YET,but surely something has to give, whether it be Clegg,Jewell etc, something has got to change, maybe both.

As for the comment on Marcus Evans facing the fans, couldn't agree more, let him see how we all really feel,we have no given right to be a play-offs certainty,i know that, but where are we after Evans sacked Jim Magilton, are we any further forward, ladies and Gents we clearly are not,we are a poor set-up,again i'm happy to read other people's replies, and if i'm wrong, again fair play, but i seriously for once, don't think i am.

I think our problem is the squad is unbalanced. We have no out and out winger (unless we can stick Carlos back where he belongs out on the right). Jet, Martin & Murphy all seem to be better playing through the centre, but those places are taken up by Chopra & Taylor and the midfield that backs them up. An up-and-coming young home product such as Hyam finds it difficult to get into the side because we have N'Daw, Luongo, and Drury also vying for the midfield spots, not to mention Kourouma as well, presumably. Obviously, added to that, we need a couple of strong full backs - everyone knows this. We have some half-decent players, but some of them are forced to play out of their preferred positions, or they simply don't get a game. I'm very pleased with Taylor, but maybe we should have gone for a big bruising centre forward for him to feed off and a few less midfielders? I'm not saying the Chopra/Taylor partnership won't work, but Chopra seems to have gone off the boil a bit. Hopefully, we can get some kind of a formation sorted out and stick to it so the players know where they are. Despite playing pretty football, the bare facts are we are not scoring goals and every time the oppostion attack you fear that a goal is due. I'm concerned we're in for a long relegation battle this season. It would be ironical if Naarwich come down, only to find we have left the division ourselves. COYB!

What we really need is a youngster with a true eye for goal who can score at will. Someone like that guy who scored for Blackburn yesterday. Rhodes is it? God if only we had someone one like that we'd treasure them and hold on to them wouldn't we??

I went yesterday we had lots of the ball and lot of energy but it comes down to poor finishing, poor defending and lack of class in midfield.People who back Jewell are just blind to the facts Cresswell and Edwards were simply awful and I think Cresswell has not been that good this season.
CBs were both poor neither talk and have no understanding of defending.
Midfield NDaw looked lacking match fitness and Drury very poor gave the ball away for there 1st goal he is no where near good enough for this league I m afraid.
Lee Martin ran around alot with no end result.
Murphy simply terrible ,Taylor again ran around a lot no end result.
Chopra might as well stay at home.
Subs poor and at the wrong time much too late.
Now you on here can blame ME you can blame Clegg but they do not train the players they dont set the tactics or pick the team or coach the defenders the basics the one person this has to come down to is Jewell his record is now the worst in ITFC history for a manager being in charge for over 18 months he must go now and REAL FANS should let him and Evans know on Wed instead of burying your head in the sand and saying he will get it right JEWELL OUT NOW

Martin hasn't signed a new contract as yet so what's the betting we pay him off and get the loan deal for boyd and sign in january. Boyd would be a good addition but we must be the only club that pay off players contracts and release them for free. Poor management on all parts. Is there any centre halfs out there ?? Yes but you have them !!!!

Clark Carlisle was on radio 5 this morning talking about his concerns for the financial future of many clubs. He probably knows what he is talking about, and it is probably true that some players and agents haven't "caught up" with the notion of financial restraint in football, which is probably unsurprising since there appear to be plenty of clubs that haven't either. Boring of me as it is, I do believe ITFC should operate sensibly, abs that appears to restrict the number of players who will choose to come here. Then again, you can't really blame them for not fancying on a number of levels. We've been an average team at best for a long time now (including under Jim) and maybe we have to have realistic expectations based on this. We don't really have, and can't seem to sign, any truly exceptional players, which in fairness is exactly what you'd expect from a mediocre team at our level. I'm going to take a different angle here, without emphasising all the usual grumbles, and say that a useful marker of our status is that Chopra starts every game pretty much. I'd pick him too if I were PJ, but I don't think he's really good enough to start every game for a decent championship club, and I don't think he ever has been. It's not a moan, he does his best, just a realistic marker of where we're at. A new manager MIGHT breathe some life into this squad - but I bet it would be short term. Not all those clubs that appear to be spending big are going to win promotion, and in 2 years' time, maybe we will have a different angle. A bit bored and frustrated, but at least solvent. I know none of this sounds very optimistic.
