Jewell: Result More Important Than Performance Monday, 1st Oct 2012 06:00 Town boss Paul Jewell felt the result was more important than his side’s performance in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Barnsley, which ended a run of three successive defeats.
Jewell said: “I think the result was more important than the performance. Two of the last three games, Middlesbrough and Wolves, we should have won, without a shadow of a doubt, but we didn’t. [On Saturday], we might have ridden our luck a little bit and we got a point.”
The Blues boss switched his team’s system to match the Tykes’ diamond, a formation he says worked well for Town early on during 2011/12: “We did it last season with decent success. We have to respect the opposition.
“In this league, every team in it is very good. Names don’t mean anything. How big the club is doesn’t mean anything.
“You’ve got to come here to a place like this - and when we’re at home - and you’ve got to work hard and forget about past reputations. You’ve got to do it on the pitch.
“Barnsley at the moment, they’re playing really good football and I thought we had to try and match them up to try and stop them, and to a large extent, certainly in the first half, I felt we did that.”
Jewell says referee Trevor Kettle had a word with him about Guirane N’Daw at the break, the Senegalese international having been involved in a heated discussion with Barnsley striker Craig Davies as the players came off at half-time, although the Blues manager missed the incident.
“I don’t know, I didn’t see anything,” Jewell said. “I was just walking off and the referee said to me to just tell him to be careful. Then he got booked and I thought the best thing I could do was get him off.”
N’Daw was replaced in the holding role by Jack Ainsley with the Blues boss admitting that his squad was stretched with another midfielder, Luke Hyam, having picked up an injury: “We were a little bit lop-sided there in the second half.
“You always know what you’re going to get with Jack, he’s always going to give an honest performance.
“We didn’t pass the ball well enough in the second half. I have to say, it looked a good pitch, but it was really sticky. The grass was long and you couldn’t run with the ball.
“We had chances to break even in the first half but we didn’t make their goalkeeper work hard enough.”
Overall, Jewell was content, if not happy, with the result, even if it’s unlikely to placate his detractors: “You’re better off getting a point. Half a loaf is better than none, as they say.
“The pressure’s there all the time, whether you win a game or lose a game, the pressure’s there. That’s part of the job.
“I live with the pressure. I don’t read newspapers or whatever they have these days. I know you’re not going to be popular when you’re losing matches, but I appreciate the support of the supporters, who kept the team going throughout the second half.”
Barnsley assistant boss David Flitcroft said Town's switch to a diamond showed the progress they are making: “When you look at Paul Jewell’s Ipswich team and some of the weapons they’re carrying, for them to come and set up the way they did shows a massive respect to Barnsley Football Club, and that includes the players.
“They’ve not gone with their usual formation to try and attack us, they’ve set up and sat deep to counter-attack.
“For me that’s another positive day for Barnsley as we move forward on this journey that we’re on.”
While he felt they were under par in the first half, he couldn't have been happier with their display after the break: “In the first half I was frustrated with the way we played too slow and too laboured and didn’t really get an angle on the game. We didn’t pass the ball as quickly with the tempo that we know we can.
“In the second half I wasn’t frustrated at all. We regrouped at half-time and the lads did everything that was asked of them.”

Home advantage is only an advantage if fans get behind the team and judging by some of the comments on here it's small wonder that we don't perform at Portman Road. Our travelling fans have always been marvellous and perhaps that's why our away results are always quite good compared with the home ones.

Surely the economic woes of the world must be Paul Jewell's fault since he seems responsible for everything else anyone can think of! Try giving the man a break and support the team along with the other 95%+ of the SUPPORTERS who go to Portman Road.

Really dont understand some of the comments on here. Dont get me wrong Pj needs to improve things but those of you making comments about it being a sad state of affairs that we are happy with a point at Barnsley, what is wrong with you ! An away point at any ground in this division is a decent result, particularly when the opposition beat Birmingham 5-0 away the week before. Add to that our two first choice strikers were out injured. Also several of you were on here slagging PJ for taking off Hyam and N'Daw at the weekend, well the fact Hyam got a knock and N'daw was close to getting himself sent off sounds good enough to me. I suspect that had he stayed on and got a red the same people would come on slating PJ for not taking him off. I didnt go to the game but on the radio at half time Suffolk said we were the better team. Yes it sounds like we rode our luck in the second half but thats football, look at the Wolves game we could have easily won that but missed a hatful. Thats Football and one of the reasons we all love it. Before i get down arrowed and slagged off i will again point out i am NOT a PJ fan and i agree he needs to improve but as usual the same people come on here and use incorrect facts and to be honest just make up reasons to slate him.

Bobblehat. Based on the fact were 23rd in the table & the worst goal difference, carrying on with PJ will see us relegated! Take those rose tinted glasses off.

hairbear - did u actually read my post ? Did i say he needs to do much better ? Yes i did. People should feel free to make constructive criticisms and point out mistakes but a lot of what is posted on here is totally inaccurate. That was my point.

hairbear - and as for banners on Saturday, how about we all get behind the team, try and get a result and build confidence. We can do that and if results still dont pick up PJ will be gone anyway. Or we could try your plan, lose, look like a bunch of t***s on the box and just be worse off.

I think most of us would welcome a change of manager, but let's be fair here, a point away from home is always a decent enough result in this division. When you consider our form and the fact that the manager and players are under considerable pressure, I think a point at Oakwell is a very respectable result and the players can take heart in the fact they hung on despite a second half onslaught. If we can get something at Brighton on Tuesday I don't think anybody can justifiably grumble.

SouperJim - agreed, thats all i was saying. Can we please just be fair and look at each game on its own merits.

BOBBLEHAT- Im a lewell out marchant but i agree we should get behind the team. The problem is the results we are getting week in week out is hard to see what we can do to turn this team around.Team support will always be there for me but theres only so much you can take. Its the excuces every week and the problems are there 18mts now and so is the manager.
Dozzells_Bobblehat added 12:42 - Oct 1
Noel - agreed. No problem with people wanting PJ out, thats their view and i understand some of the reasons its just the c**p that some people post that annoys me.

Well done oldbri and Jasons _bobblehat. Good to see there are still a few sensible posters on this site - and as Bobblehat said you don't have to be a PJ fan to make constructive comments.

Apologies Dozzells Bobblehat for getting your name wrong. Keep up the sensible, constructive and readable posts.

How can you support a team that is run by Jewell of course as a team you want them to do well but if it means getting rid the worst manager in our history then I hope we lose 6-0 tomorrow and again on Sat until he has gone then I will go and support ITFC JEWELL OUT
hairbear added 13:50 - Oct 1
Blobblehat yes i did read your post and i was giving you a correct fact rather than an incorrect one! As far as im concerned the crowd including myself have backed the team this season but something has to give. I don't see how turning up on a sat and pretending everythings ok for 90mins is helping anyone, when its plainly obvious that PJ is the reason for the low confidence. JEWELL OUT!!!

righty - cos im an Ipswich supporter, not a Jewell supporter thats how, and IMO what u should want is for us to start winning and for PJ to be here for years and years, not for us to lose games and him get sacked. As stated before, if results dont pick up he will go and you will get your way and fair enough but in the meantime how about we actually be SUPPORTERS not OPPOSERS. hairbear - no one is pretending its all ok but i dont see how protests will help. Really helped Blackburn last year didnt they.
